Evening Elephants, The Braymores, Jade Street

Tomorrow · Oct 8 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Three local bands on a Thursday is how a scene actually works, and it is the thing least likely to show up in any search you would think to run. Evening Elephants, The Braymores and Jade Street all live here. That means the crowd is not made of fans in the abstract — it is the other bands, the roommates, the person who shot the video, the friend who lent the amp. A hometown bill has a texture a touring show never does: everybody claps for everybody, and the between-set music is somebody's actual phone on shuffle. This is the show where you find the band you will be smug about in two years. Every regular at this club has that story and every one of them started on a Thursday exactly like this, standing near the back, expecting nothing in particular. Cheap door, no advance hype, three sets. If you have been meaning to find out what San Diego sounds like right now rather than what it sounded like in 2011, this is the night to do it. Thursday the eighth of October, half past eight, 2501 Kettner Blvd.

AJ Lee & Blue Summit

In 3 days · Oct 10 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Bluegrass played badly is a costume drama. Played by people who grew up inside it, it is the most technically ferocious music you can watch from four feet away. This band comes out of the Santa Cruz scene rather than any Appalachian inheritance, which frees them up considerably — the picking is traditional and precise, the song choices are not, and they will drop something that has no business in a bluegrass set and make it work. AJ Lee's mandolin and voice are the centre of it. Everyone on stage is watching each other rather than the crowd, which is how you can tell the improvisation is real. Doors seven-thirty, music eight-thirty, Saturday. October 10, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the relative who thinks they hate country music. California has its own string-band lineage that owes nothing to Nashville, and most of it plays rooms this size without ever explaining the distinction.

Dillinger Four, Prision Postumo, Tiltwheel

In 4 days · Oct 11 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Some bands tour constantly and some surface roughly once a presidential term, and the second kind produces a very particular charge in a room. The Minneapolis four-piece has spent nearly thirty years releasing almost nothing and playing almost nowhere, which has somehow made the people who love them louder rather than fewer. The records are fast, funny, and genuinely furious about having a job — songs stacked with gang vocals that were built to be shouted back by people who are tired. The crowd for this has been waiting a long time and you will hear exactly how long in the first thirty seconds. Tiltwheel is on the bill too, and that is the local pull worth noticing: they have been playing this county since before most of the room could legally drink, and they have never once been fashionable, which is its own kind of credential. Doors seven-thirty, music eight-thirty, on a Sunday, which for punk is correct. October 11, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the one who still owns the seven-inch. The old San Diego punk network never actually dissolved; it just stopped announcing itself, and it is still booking rooms like this one most weeks of the year.

Sangre Bruja, Fancy Faces, Rex Ramona

In 5 days · Oct 12 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Monday night in this city is treated as a write-off, which is strange for a place where a third of the interesting bands live here and none of them are waiting for the weekend to exist. Three of them are playing. The headliner sings in Spanish over punk that owes as much to the border as to anything out of Los Angeles, and the accent is not a stylistic decision — it is simply where they are from, which is a thing that really only happens within about twenty miles of that line. The other two acts are local as well. Nobody on this bill is touring through on the way to Phoenix. Everybody on it will be standing at the bar afterward, and you can talk to them, which is most of the point of a room this size. Doors seven-thirty, first band eight-thirty, finished at a Monday-appropriate hour. October 12, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Text the friend who keeps insisting there is nothing to do. Almost none of the bilingual punk that has come out of this county over the last twenty years was ever written about in English.

Y La Bamba, Vanessa Zamora

In 6 days · Oct 13 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Having two languages and no single room where both of them are ordinary is a specific kind of loneliness. Most music asks you to pick one and stay there. Luz Elena Mendoza's project refuses. The songs move between Spanish and English mid-thought, the way people actually talk in half the households in this county, and the arrangements sit somewhere between Mexican folk tradition and something considerably stranger and more fragile — harmonies that stack up and then drop out entirely, leaving a voice alone in a way that is almost uncomfortable. Vanessa Zamora opens, coming up from Tijuana, which reframes the whole night. It stops reading like a tour stop and starts reading like a regional conversation that happens to be selling tickets. Two artists, one border, nobody treating it as a theme. Doors seven-thirty, music eight-thirty, a Tuesday. October 13, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring your mother if she will come, or the friend who also code-switches without noticing they are doing it. The border runs directly through the middle of this city's music and it very rarely gets booked that honestly.

In 7 days · Oct 14 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Local bands get exactly one shot at you, and it is almost always on a weeknight, opening for somebody else you actually came to see. Occasionally they get a whole bill to themselves. This is one of those, and it is stacked with the kind of melodic, slightly overwrought guitar music that a nineteen-year-old needs and a thirty-four-year-old secretly still needs. Three acts, all working the same emotional register, none of them famous enough that you will be watching over anyone's raised phone. The crowd will be mostly friends of the bands, which sounds like a warning and is actually the appeal — nobody is bored, nobody is there ironically. A Wednesday. Doors seven-thirty, first band eight-thirty. October 14, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever still defends the album that got you through a specific year. San Diego turns out this kind of band constantly and almost none of it makes it past the county line.

Shiner, Fotocrime, Nonexistent Night

In 8 days · Oct 15 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Too heavy for the radio and too melodic for the hardcore kids was a real commercial dead end, and the bands stuck in it spent the nineties being adored by about eleven thousand people who all still bring it up unprompted at parties. The headliner came out of Kansas City and made that particular trade-off sound deliberate: enormous low end, patient song structures, vocals that stay calm while everything underneath them gets heavier. Then look at who is opening. Fotocrime plays cold, drum-machine-driven post-punk that on paper shares nothing with the band above it, and in sequence makes complete sense — the same appetite for weight and repetition, routed through a different decade and a much colder set of tools. That is the actual reason to go. Bills this well-sequenced are rare, and the odds are good you arrive for one act and order the other one's record from the parking lot afterward. Doors seven-thirty, first act eight-thirty, a Thursday. October 15, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever you argue about record production with. The line between heavy nineties rock and the darkwave rooms across town is far thinner here than either crowd will admit.

In 9 days · Oct 16 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Surf music never actually died, it just stopped being on the radio and moved into rooms where the people playing it own more vintage amplifiers than furniture. This is three deep in that world. Reverb-drenched instrumentals, frat-rock covers played faster than the originals, organ where you do not expect organ — the whole aesthetic delivered by people who have been arguing about tremolo settings for thirty years and will happily do it with you at the bar. It is also, crucially, dance music. Nobody stands still at these, including the people who claim they came only to look at the gear. Expect the floor to be moving by the second song. Doors seven-thirty, first band eight-thirty, a Friday. October 16, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever thinks they do not like instrumental music. Southern California basically invented this sound and there is still a working circuit for it here, entirely unadvertised outside its own crowd.

Blitzkid, Zombeast, The Writhers

In 11 days · Oct 18 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Two weeks before Halloween, the people who dress like this all year round get their actual holiday, and it looks nothing at all like the bar crawl everyone else is planning. Horrorpunk is a small and startlingly sincere world: B-movie imagery, greaser haircuts, songs about graveyards delivered with total commitment and absolutely no irony anywhere in the building. The West Virginia headliner has been at it since the nineties and carries a following that treats the band less like entertainment and more like a denomination — people who learned the words at fifteen and have not revised their opinion since. Two more acts sit underneath, both leaning the same direction, so the aesthetic holds all night instead of breaking between sets. If you have never been in a room like this, the thing that surprises people is how friendly it is. The look is hostile. The crowd is not. Doors at seven, first band at eight, a Sunday. October 18, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Wear the jacket. San Diego runs a full calendar of this every October and it operates almost entirely by word of mouth.

Protomartyr, Accessory

In 13 days · Oct 20 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

One of the sharpest lyricists working in American rock is a man who mostly talks rather than sings, and he is doing it in a two-hundred-capacity room on a Tuesday night in San Diego. The delivery is the whole thing. He speaks over the band like somebody arguing with a television, and the band plays tense, wiry post-punk underneath that never quite resolves, so the songs stay clenched for their full length. The subject is almost always the Midwest — decay, institutional rot, the specific humiliations of a place being managed into decline by people who do not live there. It should be miserable. It is somehow very funny, which is the part recordings never fully capture. Accessory opens. Doors at seven, on stage at eight. October 20, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the friend who reads the lyrics before the second listen. The post-punk rooms in this city are small, loyal, and booked months ahead by people who never explain themselves to anyone.

Nobody's favourite band was famous at the point they found them. That discovery is the actual product of a room like this, and it only works if you go before you have heard of anyone. So: two acts, early in whatever is going to happen to them, on a Wednesday in a room that has been giving this exact slot to people for decades. The upside of arriving this early is that the set is not yet a performance of itself — nothing is locked in, the between-song talking is unrehearsed, and if it goes well you will have been in the room for it. The downside is that sometimes it does not go well. That is the deal, and it is a fair one at this ticket price. Doors seven-thirty, music eight-thirty. October 21, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the friend who likes being first. Midweek bills in this city are where almost every band you will later claim to have discovered is playing right now.

Oct 23, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

You were sixteen and you screamed every word in a car that did not have working air conditioning. You have not stopped knowing those words. You have simply stopped having anywhere to put them. Here is the part newcomers get wrong: nobody is playing. There is no band. It is a DJ night, which sounds like a downgrade right up until the moment four hundred adults deliver a chorus louder than any touring act could manage, because every single one of them has been waiting years to be asked. People turn up expecting a concert and leave having been in a choir. Doors and set both at nine, which is late enough that everyone arrives already committed. Friday October 23, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the person who was in that car. Hayden Everett, Jackson Lundy

Oct 26, 2026 $15-$18 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

The best show you will see this month costs eighteen dollars and the headliner will probably be standing at the bar before the set, because at this size there is no backstage worth hiding in. Everett and Lundy are both early enough in it that the room is the point - a Monday night bill at the Casbah, which has been San Diego's proving ground since 1989 and which has the receipts to prove it: Nirvana played the old room, the White Stripes played it, and the booker has kept the same instinct for who is about to matter. Monday is the night the Casbah gives to the acts it believes in rather than the acts that sell, which is exactly why the regulars pay attention to Mondays. Twenty-one and over, doors at seven, music at eight, and the back patio by the airport flight path where you can hear the planes between songs. If you want to be the person who saw someone in a hundred-capacity room and said so later, this is how that happens. It is a Monday. You have nothing else on.

Agriculture with Uniform and Pure Hex

Oct 29, 2026 $22+ The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Black metal is supposed to be cold, misanthropic, and allergic to joy. Then a band turned up calling what they do ecstatic black metal and meaning every syllable of it, and the genre has been arguing about it ever since. The blast beats and the tremolo storms are all still there. What changed is where they point — up, at the sky, instead of down into the abyss. The result is overwhelming and somehow life-affirming, closer to a religious experience than a funeral, and in a room the size of the one on Kettner Boulevard it stops being something you hear and becomes something happening inside your sternum. Uniform and Pure Hex bring the heaviness on either side of it. A Thursday in late October, grown folks only, in a small room full of people who already know the secret. This is for anyone who always suspected the loudest music could also be the most transcendent. Come get leveled and leave lighter than you arrived.

The Creepy Creeps, Mistress 77, Widows, Rey Wolf

Oct 31, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Halloween as an adult is usually a bar charging eleven dollars to watch strangers in store-bought costumes look at their phones. You have done that version. It is not the one you remember wanting. The alternative is a room where the band is also in costume and has been for twenty years. The Creepy Creeps play monster-movie garage surf in masks, which is the sort of commitment that stops reading as a gimmick somewhere around the second song and starts reading as a genuine belief system. Three more acts behind them, so the night has actual shape instead of one set and a DJ. Doors at eight, first band at nine. Four bands on Halloween night means you will be there until it is November. Born Without Bones at The Casbah

Nov 7, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

The Massachusetts DIY punk scene is not a genre. It's a ZIP code with a sound — basements where the ceiling is too low for the drummer to stand, living rooms where the PA is someone's home stereo, and a specific brand of melodic punk that sounds like it was written by someone who reads more than they let on. Born Without Bones grew up in that scene and never really left it, even after four albums. Their sound pulls from '90s alternative and heartland singer-songwriter territory in ways that punk bands aren't supposed to admit — the hooks are earnest, the lyrics are literate, and the energy comes from caring too much rather than pretending not to care at all. The Casbah is the right size for this. Not because the band can't draw bigger, but because the songs work best when you can see the sweat on the singer's forehead and the setlist taped to the floor. Saturday, November 7. Doors at 8:30. Kettner Blvd. 21+.

The cure is a small independent room on Kettner where the bill is two bands you have not heard of yet. That is the entire pitch and it is a better one than it sounds: nobody is there out of obligation, nobody is filming the whole set, and the thing you walk out with is a band you now get to tell people about first. That specific pleasure is only available before anyone else knows. Doors at seven-thirty, music at eight-thirty. Home at a reasonable hour, which on a Wednesday is not a small consideration. Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, The Styletones

Nov 21 – Nov 22, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Instrumental soul is music for people who have run out of things to say and would rather not be sung at about it. No lyrics to argue with. Just a Hammond organ, a horn section, and a rhythm section that has clearly played together for years. Sure Fire Soul Ensemble are from here — a San Diego band cut from the same cloth as the Daptone records out of Brooklyn, playing deep funk and boogaloo with the tape hiss left in on purpose. They record to analog, which is the sort of detail that could be affectation and in their case audibly is not; the records sound like they were found rather than made. The Styletones share the bill and the same lineage. This is a local band on a local stage in front of people who have watched them get good over a decade. Those nights are different, and everybody in the room knows it. Doors at eight on Saturday the twenty-first of November; the band goes on at nine.

Mini Trees

Dec 2, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Grief that arrives early reorganizes a person, and the songs on this project are about living in the reorganized version rather than about the event itself. Lexi Vega writes them in Los Angeles, quiet and precise, drums programmed then replayed, the kind of record people put on alone and then cannot recommend to anyone without over-explaining. She has spent years as a drummer for other people, which is audible in how the songs are built from the rhythm outward rather than the melody down. Live, with a full band, they get considerably bigger than the recordings prepare you for. The San Diego room on Kettner Boulevard is a small, dark, famously well-run club that has been the center of this city's music for decades. Music at 8:00 PM, twenty-one and over, on a Wednesday. Evil Island

Dec 13, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

December Sundays are the dead zone of the live music calendar. The year is winding down, everyone is broke from presents, and the bands that play anyway are doing it for the people who would show up regardless. That is the correct condition for a small room. There is no industry in the audience in the second week of December, no one taking meetings, nobody there to be seen — just a couple hundred people who would rather be in a dark room on Kettner than at another holiday party pretending to enjoy a white elephant exchange. The Casbah has been the constant in San Diego music for over thirty years, the room where nearly every band this city produced played early and badly before they got good. A Sunday night bill there is the venue doing what it has always done. Doors at half seven on Sunday the thirteenth of December, music at half eight.

In 1977 a band put out a record with twenty-one songs on it, several of them under a minute, and rearranged what a song was permitted to be. Half the music you like is downstream of it whether or not anyone told you. So here is the thing worth knowing before you buy: this is not a Wire set. The ticket files them under Immersion, the duo Colin Newman and Malka Spigel record as together, and it is ambient, patient, largely instrumental work. Anyone arriving to shout along with Pink Flag will be confused by minute four. Anyone arriving to sit inside a sound for ninety minutes is going to have one of those nights they describe badly for years afterward. The difference between singing along and taking the microphone is roughly the difference between watching and being watched, and one of those changes your whole evening. That is the entire format. A live band, a songbook of the records that ruined and rescued you somewhere around fifteen, and a queue of people who have been rehearsing in the car for years without admitting it. Nobody is good. Being good is not the point and would arguably wreck it. The room's job is to carry whoever is up there, and a room full of people who all know the same bridge is extremely good at that job. Thirty years on, the cover that made them famous is still the least interesting song they ever released, and the band knows it better than anyone. What survived is the songwriting — short, melodic, unbothered, built by someone who appears to have never once tried to sound important. Evan Dando's voice has gone from pretty to weathered, which suits the material better than it did originally. The shows are famously variable, and that unpredictability has become part of the deal for the people who keep turning up: you are buying a real evening rather than a faithful reproduction of a record you already own and can play at home. A Tuesday in March, doors at seven, music at eight, in a room holding two hundred. March 2, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever owned the cassette. L7: The Last Hurrah Tour 2026 — Night 2

Today · Oct 7 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Night two is where the band stops performing the tour and starts playing the room. By the second show at a two-hundred-capacity club, L7 have already learned which corner of the Casbah swallows the guitars and which songs made this specific crowd lose it. That changes what happens. The between-song talk gets longer and worse and better. Somebody yells for a deep cut off Smell the Magic and there is an actual argument on stage about whether they remember how it goes. Sometimes they play it anyway, badly, and that is the one you will describe to people for years. This is a band whose whole thesis was that being unimpressed is a pose and enthusiasm is braver. Three decades on, in a room this size, that lands harder than it ever did in an arena. The crowd is a mix of people who bought Bricks Are Heavy new and people who found them through a needle drop in a film, and neither group can stand still. The later start is not an accident. Night two runs long. Kettner Boulevard, Wednesday the seventh. Half past eight, and later than that by the end.

L7: The Last Hurrah Tour 2026

Oct 6, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

They said the last one was the last one. Nobody believed it then either. L7 spent the early nineties being the band other bands were scared to follow, and the thing that made them dangerous was never the volume — it was that they were funnier than you and louder than you at the same time. Donita Sparks throwing a tampon into a festival crowd is the story everyone repeats. The story that matters more is that they wrote hooks sharp enough that you could sing along to a song about being furious, and thirty years later a room full of people who were not born yet still know every word. The Casbah holds about two hundred. That is the joke and the point. A band that headlined Reading is playing a room where you can see the setlist taped to the floor, and it went the way those shows go — quietly, to people who set an alarm. They are doing two nights here. If you can only take one, take this one; the first night of a stand is where the nerves still show, and on this band nerves look like violence. Tuesday the sixth of October, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Eight o'clock, and it will be loud by five past.

Jesse Roper, Ali Angel

Oct 4, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

A Sunday night show is a filter. Whoever is standing in that room has work in the morning and came anyway. Jesse Roper plays blues-rock out of Victoria, British Columbia, which is a sentence that undersells it — the recordings are all fuzz and slide and a voice that sounds like it has been left outside in weather. Live he is a different proposition again, closer to a soul revue than a bar band, and he has the specific ease of someone who has played a thousand rooms this size and stopped being nervous about any of them. The Casbah on a Sunday is the version of the Casbah the regulars actually love. Half-full, no line, the bartender has time to talk to you. You can stand at the front without negotiating for it. This is a cheap ticket for a band that will cost more in three years, which is the entire reason people learn to trust a small venue's booking rather than a recommendation algorithm. Brian Fallon & The Painkillers, Tim Barry — Evening Show

Oct 3, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

The afternoon crowd goes home and a different one files in, and by nine the room smells like every good club you have ever stood in. Same artist, same night, different setlist, entirely different animal. The evening show at a two-hundred-cap room is where Fallon plays the loud ones — the Gaslight songs a matinee audience is too sober for and this one absolutely is not. There will be a moment, probably in the encore, where he stops singing and lets two hundred people carry a chorus he wrote about being twenty and broke in New Jersey, and everyone in the room will be somewhere else for about forty seconds. Tim Barry opens this one too. Two sets from him in a day is a gift; he tells long stories between songs about riding freight trains and every one of them is true. If you did the matinee, come back — the overlap is smaller than you would guess. If you did not, this is the one people will still be talking about at Christmas. Same address, same Saturday, eight o'clock — and a different band by then.

Brian Fallon & The Painkillers, Tim Barry

Oct 3, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

A four in the afternoon rock show sounds like a mistake until you have been to one. The light is wrong in the best way. Nobody is drunk yet. The people who came are the people who wanted it badly enough to give up a Saturday afternoon, which means the room is full of the version of a crowd that actually listens. Brian Fallon has spent a career writing about people in cars at night, and hearing those songs while it is still bright outside does something strange and good to them. He is the voice of The Gaslight Anthem, and the solo records are the same preoccupations with the amps turned down enough that you can hear the words — Jersey, radio, somebody's older brother, a girl whose name is also a song title. Tim Barry opens, which is its own reason to come: former Avail, now writing the plainest and most devastating folk songs going. The matinee and the evening show run different setlists. Regulars do both. If you only do one, the early show is the one where he talks more. Four in the afternoon, Saturday the third of October, 2501 Kettner Blvd.

In Her Own Words, Every Avenue, Felicity, Ikana

Oct 2, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

There is a specific age at which a song about wanting to leave your hometown stops being aspirational and becomes a memory, and this bill is built for the people on both sides of that line. In Her Own Words came out of the fifth wave the way the good ones do — self-recorded, a following built entirely on people sending each other links, no radio involved at any point. Every Avenue are the older siblings on this lineup; if you were fourteen in 2009 and owned a studded belt, you already know Shh. Just Go With It by heart and you have not admitted that to anyone in a decade. Four bands on a Friday at the Casbah is a lot of value for the money and a lot of sweat for the room. The floor gets genuinely warm by the third band and nobody minds. This is a scene that never stopped. It just stopped being covered. The people in this room have been going the whole time and will be surprised you thought it ended. Friday the second of October, half past seven, 2501 Kettner Blvd.

Author & Punisher, Guiltless

Oct 1, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

You have tried to play this kind of music for someone in a car. You watched their face do the polite thing, and afterward you stopped offering. It became a private weather system instead — something you put on alone when you need to feel the inside of your own skull. Tristan Shone builds the machines he performs on. He worked in a San Diego machine shop as a mechanical engineer, and the instruments he plays — drone machines, dub machines, slabs of aluminum riding on rails that he shoves and drags — exist because no manufactured instrument did what he needed it to do. Watching him is nearer to watching somebody operate industrial equipment than watching a band. He leans his entire body into the controls. The low end reaches your sternum a half-second before your ears file a report. Guiltless opens. The room holds a few hundred, which means the floor participates. Doors at seven, show at eight, Thursday the first of October. The Casbah sits on Kettner just up from Laurel.

Slow Magic

Sep 24, 2026 $22+ The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Nobody actually knows who is under the mask, and after a few minutes you stop caring, which is the whole enchantment. An anonymous producer in a glowing animal head plays live drums over shimmering, tribal, unreasonably emotional electronic music, and the result lands somewhere between a rave and a ritual. The cult following treats every performance like a secret handshake — people who found this on their own and have never quite been able to explain it to anyone who has not stood in the room while the drums come in. A small, sweaty, transcendent night on Kettner Boulevard, one Thursday in September, in a venue that has hosted exactly this kind of thing for decades and knows precisely what it is doing with it. Bring the friend who likes a little magic with their music, and let it carry both of you somewhere else.

Temples at Casbah

Sep 20, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Some weeks wear your edges all the way down, and the only real cure is a room where the lights go kaleidoscope, the reverb swallows everything, and for a while you get to be nobody in particular. Temples build songs like slow sunrises — jangling, glittering, hypnotic, arranged so you stop tracking where one ends. English psych-pop done properly is less a genre than a small act of disappearing, and it does not work from the back of an arena. It works in a two-hundred-capacity room where the stage is close enough to touch and there is nowhere to hide from how good it sounds. The Casbah is that room, on Kettner, and it has been that room for as long as anyone in San Diego has cared about guitars. Poppy Jean Crawford opens. Small room, big sound, the kind of show people are still bringing up a year later. Bring whoever needs to disappear with you.

Friko at Casbah

Sep 19, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

They play like the stakes are life itself, which is not a thing most young bands manage without embarrassing themselves. Quiet one second and detonating the next — a Chicago two-piece whose debut landed on every year-end list that counts, and the people who found it early have been waiting to learn whether that ferocious, tender thing survives contact with a live room. It does. The Casbah is the small box on Kettner where this city has watched a hundred bands turn into themselves, and in a room that size the loud-quiet catharsis has nowhere to go except straight through you. Twenty-one and over. Come if you still believe a rock show can wreck you in the best possible way, and if you want to have been there before the rooms get big and the tickets get impossible. You will be insufferable about it later. Worth it.

Sweeping Promises at The Casbah

Sep 16, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Lira Mondal records vocals in a stairwell because the reverb is better than any studio effect money can buy. Caufield Schnug writes guitar parts that sound like they were beamed in from a 1980 Manchester basement and reassembled in a Boston apartment. Together they are Sweeping Promises, and Sub Pop signed them because someone at the label heard a four-track recording and couldn't stop pressing play. The You Say I Romanticize Tour brings them to the Casbah on the first leg of a mammoth North American run. Blair Gun and Intermission open. The room will be small enough to hear the stairwell. This is post-punk that trusts the song over the production — two people who figured out that limitation is a sound, not a problem. The kind of band you tell one friend about, and that friend tells one friend, and six months later the 300-cap rooms are selling out before the poster goes up. Tuesday, September 16. Doors 7:30, show 8:30. Kettner Blvd. 21+. Eighteen dollars.

Unsane at The Casbah

Sep 15, 2026 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

There's a specific sound that happens when a guitar string is played so hard it almost breaks but doesn't. Unsane has been finding that exact threshold since 1988. The New York noise rock trio that helped define the AmRep and Matador sound brings their distortion-soaked fury to the Casbah. Chris Spencer's vocals sit in the mix like a warning siren buried under rubble — you feel them before you hear them. The rhythm section doesn't support the guitar; it competes with it. Every song is a controlled demolition where the demolition forgets to be controlled. The C*nts and Owl Be Damned open, which means the Casbah stage will already be vibrating before the headliner plugs in. This is a 300-cap room show with a band that has been playing rooms like this for almost four decades — not because they can't play bigger, but because this is where the sound works. Monday, September 15. Doors at 8 PM. Kettner Blvd, right where it always is. $18–$20.

The Loons, The Killing Floors & Los Sweepers at Casbah

Aug 29, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Some rock and roll never left the garage and never wanted to. Fuzzed-out, snarling, soaked in the sixties, played by lifers who treat a Farfisa organ like a sacred object and will absolutely tell you why yours is the wrong model. This is a whole night of it. The Loons have carried the torch for this city's psych-garage underground for decades; the other two bands on the bill bring the younger, meaner end of the same sound. Stack them at the Casbah and you get the sweaty, reverb-drowned kind of show that reminds you rock and roll was always supposed to be slightly dangerous and mostly fun. The record-collector kids with the Nuggets box set and the boots already know the secret: San Diego has quietly been one of the best garage towns in America for forty years, and nights like this are the proof. Bring the friend who says nothing good happens here anymore. Stand them near the front and let it settle the argument.

The Black Heart Procession at Casbah

Aug 15, 2026 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Some bands belong to a city the way fog belongs to a coastline. This one is San Diego's, and has been since the late-nineties underground, when they and Three Mile Pilot quietly decided what this town sounded like after midnight — mournful piano, a singing saw, songs that move at the speed of a bad night. They do not play often. When they do it at the Casbah, the little room on Kettner where half this city's music history actually happened, it stops being a concert and becomes a reunion of everyone who was there plus everyone who wishes they had been. The songs are heavy and slow and beautiful, the kind you feel behind your sternum rather than in your ears. The lifers still have the seven-inches in a milk crate somewhere. Twenty-one and over. Send this to the person you used to drive around with at two in the morning.

Playlunch

Aug 13, 2026 $15-$18 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Jangle-pop and post-punk keep each other honest when you let them share a song -- too much sweetness and you drift, too much spikiness and you clench -- and Playlunch writes right down that seam. The Melbourne five-piece makes tight Australian indie, the kind of catalog that earns a small devoted cult on every continent it actually reaches. The Casbah on a Thursday is the right room for the US run: two hundred capacity, the bar that's been the bar for thirty-five years. Bring the friend who imports records and makes you listen to them in the car. The crowd is the indie kids who already have the songs plus the Casbah regulars who show up for whatever sounds promising on a Thursday. Doors at eight, openers at eight-thirty, Playlunch around ten. Fifteen dollars at the door, Thursday in San Diego.

Off With Their Heads at The Casbah

Aug 12, 2026 $18-$22 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Punk this fast usually skips the hard part. Then Ryan Young gets up and sings the whole ugly inside of your own head back at you — the not-drinking, the long slow shape of recovery — without slowing the tempo once. He has been fronting this out of Minneapolis since 2002, gravel voice, bass you feel in your chest, folk-punk and pop-punk overlapping so completely that on a good night the room knows the words better than the band does. A Wednesday at the Casbah is the correct setting: two hundred people, a lot of patched jackets, and at least a few tattoos that quote the lyrics directly. Nobody in there wandered in by accident. Everyone came because this was the only room in town that booked it. Bring the friend who got you through the year you still do not talk about. You will not have to explain why.

Kid Congo Powers & the Pink Monkey Birds

Aug 9, 2026 $20-$25 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

The man playing guitar in this two-hundred-capacity room on Sunday night came up through the Cramps, the Gun Club, and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds — three of the most influential bands of the last fifty years — and he's still out here with the Pink Monkey Birds, close enough that you can read his face. Kid Congo Powers helped teach everyone else what those songs could be, and he plays rooms like this because rooms like this are where it still means something. The Casbah has booked bands like him for thirty-five years, in a converted Middletown rectangle that holds nothing fancy except the people who keep showing up. Shows like this sell out — not from marketing, but because the regulars text the regulars and the regulars buy the tickets. Sunday night, 21+, doors at eight, openers at eight-thirty. Tickets through the Casbah's own site; they've always sold their own. Bring the friend who owns the first Gun Club record.

Day We Ran at The Casbah

Aug 7, 2026 $15-$18 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Showing up early for an opener you have never heard of is a gamble. Sometimes you get thirty minutes of noise. Sometimes you get the thing you spend the next two years telling people you were in the room for. The four-piece playing this one writes short, hook-forward guitar songs, the kind the press declared finished years ago and which never once stopped working on a Friday night. Nothing to decode, no concept to explain, just verse-chorus-verse loud in a small room. And it is that room: the bar that has been the bar in this city for thirty-five years, a couple hundred people deep, where the difference between a good band and a great one is about four feet of air. The Casbah on Kettner, fifteen dollars at the door, doors early. Text the friend who keeps insisting nobody makes guitar music anymore.

The Technicolors at The Casbah

Aug 6, 2026 $18-$22 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Some records only make sense alone in the car at night, windows down, the fuzz on the guitars staying warm the whole drive. The Technicolors make that kind — dream-pop with choruses built for exactly that solitude — and they're playing the Casbah on a Thursday, which is a small kindness to everyone whose weekend is already spoken for. The Casbah has been the Casbah for thirty-five years: two hundred capacity, an indoor smoking patio, the same bar. On a Thursday the crowd skews early-30s — people who ducked out of dinner to catch the openers and will be at work in the morning anyway. The band comes on around nine-thirty, does an hour, and stays to take pictures with everyone who waits at the merch table. Doors at eight, openers at eight-thirty. Tickets through the Casbah's own site — twenty bucks if you grab them before the door. Bring the friend who still buys vinyl.

Spike Hellis at The Casbah

Aug 1, 2026 $18-$22 The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San…

Industrial music isn't supposed to be tender, and then the rhythm hits and your shoulders are moving before your brain catches up. Spike Hellis makes coldwave that's both -- distorted vocals, synths built from cold, the kind of groove that's visceral and somehow gentle underneath. They've been at it since 2019, mostly out of LA, mostly for people who already know what coldwave is and don't need it explained. The Casbah on a Saturday opens August with it: two-hundred capacity, the bar that's been the bar for thirty-five years, the crowd in mesh and leather and patches and steel-toes. Bring the friend whose closet is entirely black. Doors at eight, openers at eight-thirty, Spike Hellis around ten. Twenty dollars at the door. Saturday in San Diego -- the room is the kind of crowd that's spent years following labels nobody else has heard of, here because someone in their feed said the right thing about it.
