Just Like Heaven Festival 2027 — Pasadena
May 3 – May 4, 2027 Rose Bowl Stadium, 1001 Rose Bowl …

Nobody involved is pretending this is new music, and that honesty is exactly why it works. Most of these headliners made their most important records decades ago. The records held up. The crowd knows precisely why it is standing in front of each act, which is not something you can say about a general festival field. Past bills have run Portishead, New Order, Slowdive, Mazzy Star, The Cure, Cigarettes After Sex — indie, post-punk, dream pop, shoegaze, sequenced by people who understand the difference between nostalgia and quality that simply aged well. The Rose Bowl handles it at human scale: a walkable floor, stages placed so you are not forced to choose between two things you drove out for, and food that reflects the city instead of standard festival concessions. Gold Line and shuttles run on the day. Send it to the friend whose entire personality is a shoegaze playlist. They will know before you finish typing the message.

Anime Central 2027 — Rosemont, IL
May 14, 2027 Donald E. Stephens Convention Cent…

Before anime was something you could explain at work, a few thousand people started meeting once a year in a suburb next to O'Hare airport to watch subtitled tapes and argue about them. Three decades on, Anime Central is the largest anime convention in the Midwest, still in Rosemont, still fundamentally shaped by having been built by fans rather than by a company. The thing that makes it distinctive is the hotel geography. The convention center connects by covered walkway to several large hotels, and because Rosemont is a small municipality that exists mostly to serve the airport, the convention effectively takes over the entire area for a weekend. That produces the phenomenon regulars talk about most: the con does not close. Room parties, hallway gatherings, impromptu dance circles, people in costume getting food at two in the morning at the same handful of restaurants. The formal programming is strong — a large dealers hall, a serious artist alley, concerts, a masquerade that people train for — but the actual memory people carry out is of the hours between the scheduled things. Worth it? If you want a large anime convention with a genuine all-night social culture, this is one of the best in the country and the walkway layout is a real structural advantage over conventions where you have to cross a city at midnight. If you want polished, corporate-run programming and major industry announcements, the coastal shows are bigger. ACen is scrappier and warmer. What to know before you go: book a connected hotel the moment rooms open, because being on the walkway versus off it changes the entire weekend. Rosemont has its own train stop on the blue line, so you can fly in and never rent a car. May in Chicago is unpredictable and the walkways mean you may never need a coat. Bring cash for artist alley. And the panel rooms fill fast for anything popular, so queue rather than wander. It is on this list because a thirty-year-old fan-built institution that still runs on its own social energy is a genuinely interesting thing to know exists, whether or not you ever fly to Illinois for it. Anime Central 2027 runs May 14–16, 2027 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

EDC Las Vegas 2027 — Las Vegas, NV
May 14, 2027 Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 7000 N L…

Electric Daisy Carnival is the largest electronic music festival in North America, held overnight at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For 2027 it expands to two consecutive weekends under a new structure — EDC Dusk on May 14 through 16 and EDC Dawn on May 21 through 23 — with a reduced daily capacity that regulars have wanted for years. The defining fact is that it runs at night. Gates open in the evening and the grounds stay live until roughly 5:30 in the morning, which means the emotional arc of an EDC night is nothing like a daytime festival. The exhausted, euphoric hour around 4 AM, when the sky over the speedway starts going grey and the last main-stage sets are still running, is the thing people actually come back for. The kinetic sculptures, the carnival rides running all night, the enormous owl over the main stage — it is deliberately overwhelming, and the crowd participates rather than watches. Strangers trade handmade beaded bracelets, a practice that started organically and never got corporate. Worth it? Honestly, it depends on whether you can sleep during the day in Las Vegas in May. That is the real filter, and people underestimate it badly. If you can, this is one of the genuinely singular experiences in American nightlife — a scale of production that no other festival on the continent attempts. If you cannot handle heat, crowds of 100,000, or being awake until sunrise for three consecutive nights, this will be a miserable and expensive weekend. There is no partial version of EDC. What to know: the speedway is a long way from the Strip and the shuttle is the only sane option — rideshare surge at 5 AM with 100,000 people leaving at once is the classic first-timer mistake. Camp EDC exists specifically to solve the commute and sells out. Hydration is not advice, it is the entire strategy; the desert at night is cold and the daytime hotel room is hot, and people routinely misjudge both. Bring a portable battery, because cell service on the grounds is historically poor and finding your group without a phone is genuinely difficult. EDC is on this list because it is the clearest example of an event that most people will never attend but that reorganizes how they imagine a night could go. The two-weekend expansion for 2027 is the first structural change in years, and it makes attending meaningfully easier than it has been. EDC Dusk: May 14 through 16, 2027. Friday gates open at 5 PM for the opening ceremony; Saturday and Sunday gates at 7 PM, with the grounds running until 5:30 AM.

MEGACON Orlando 2027 — Orlando, FL
May 20, 2027 Orange County Convention Center, 9…

The largest fan convention in the southeastern United States happens in a city already built entirely around manufactured wonder, which could have made it redundant and instead makes it a useful contrast — this is the weekend when Orlando's fantasy is assembled by the people attending rather than sold to them. MEGACON has grown into a four-day event at the Orange County Convention Center drawing well over a hundred thousand people. What it is, practically, is enormous and unusually broad. Comics, anime, gaming, horror, science fiction and a large celebrity guest roster all sit under one roof, and the show has leaned hard into fan-built spectacle: costume contests with real production value, a substantial number of large-scale prop and vehicle builds, and an artist alley that has become one of the bigger ones in the country. Because Florida draws attendees from across the Southeast and the Caribbean, the crowd composition is different from the coastal shows — younger on average, more family groups, and noticeably more first-timers, which gives the floor an enthusiasm that jaded convention veterans find slightly startling. Worth it? If you live anywhere in the Southeast, this is the show, and the guest list alone usually justifies it. If you are traveling from far away specifically for it, the honest answer is that the convention is excellent but the surrounding city will absorb your budget fast, so plan for that deliberately rather than accidentally. It is not the show for deep comics scholarship; it is the show for scale, spectacle and meeting people whose work you know from a screen. What to know: the Orange County Convention Center is vast and the two buildings are a real walk apart, so check your hall. Autograph and photo op tickets sell separately and the popular ones go early. Florida in May is hot and the walk from parking is unshaded. Bring water; there are refill stations. And the Thursday preview day is significantly calmer if your badge covers it. It sits on this list because a hundred thousand people building their own spectacle in the shadow of the world's most engineered one is a genuinely interesting thing to know is happening. MEGACON Orlando 2027 runs May 20–23, 2027 at the Orange County Convention Center.

Preakness Stakes 2027 - Baltimore, MD
May 23, 2027 Pimlico Race Course, 5201 Park Hei…

For a hundred and fifty-one years the middle jewel of the Triple Crown has been run on a Saturday. In 2027 it will not be, and the reason is the most interesting thing in American racing right now. The 152nd Preakness Stakes goes to post at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Sunday, May 23, 2027 — eight days after the traditional third Saturday in May, and the first time any Triple Crown race has ever been run on a Sunday. The move is a deliberate concession to how horses are actually trained now: two weeks between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness is brutal on a Derby winner, and the middle leg has spent years watching the best three-year-olds skip it. An extra week is an attempt to make the Triple Crown mean what it used to. What Pimlico is, in person, is old. It does not have the manicured Southern theatre of Churchill Downs and it has never pretended to. It sits in a Baltimore residential neighborhood, the paint is tired, and the infield on Preakness day is a great democratic mess of people who came to be there rather than to be seen. That is the appeal, and people who prefer the Preakness to the Derby will tell you so without being asked. The traditions are unusually good. The winning owner is presented the Woodlawn Vase, a piece of Tiffany silver that lives under guard at the Baltimore Museum of Art and travels to the track for the ceremony before going straight back — the owner keeps a half-size replica instead. And the moment the result is official, a painter climbs the replica clubhouse cupola in the infield and repaints the horse-and-rider weathervane in the winning stable's silks, where it stays for exactly one year. The practice dates to 1909, after lightning took down the original arrow-shaped vane. Who it is for: anyone who would rather watch a sport in a building that has not been renovated into an experience. Be warned that 2027 catches Pimlico mid-surgery. A five-hundred-million-dollar rebuild is not scheduled to finish until ahead of the 2028 race, the grandstand will not be ready in May, and temporary seating and hospitality will stand in — which is also why the 2026 running happened at Laurel Park instead. A post time for the feature has not been announced; the card runs most of the day and the Preakness is the late race. One week a year, a worn-out track in northwest Baltimore holds the only thing standing between a horse and history. Most people watch it on television and still remember where they were. Sunday, May 23, 2027. Pimlico Race Course, 5201 Park Heights Ave, Baltimore. Tickets through the track.

A few weeks after a set drops the format cracks open, everybody has a theory, and the problem is that there are nowhere near enough people around you who care as much as you do. A Regional is where that finally has somewhere to go. For one weekend everyone who has been grinding the ladder and testing lines at one in the morning is in the same room. The top tables play at a level worth watching even if you never register — decks built around a single counter nobody saw coming, rounds decided in the last ninety seconds with travel points and a Worlds invite sitting on the board. Judges in official regalia work the aisles with practiced calm. Side events run all day for whoever dropped from the main or just wants reps against strangers better than their locals. San Diego takes the only Southern California Regional of the season, downtown, with registration opening on RK9 months out. If you play, watch for check-in. If you do not, come Sunday and watch the top cut decide who flies to Worlds.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival 2027 — Telluride, CO
Jun 17, 2027 Telluride Town Park, 500 E Colorad…

For four days every June, a box canyon at 8,750 feet in the San Juan Mountains becomes the most improbable music venue in North America. The 54th Telluride Bluegrass Festival runs June 17 through 20, 2027, in Telluride Town Park, with 13,000-foot peaks rising directly behind the stage and a river running along the edge of the field. Run by Planet Bluegrass, it has spent five decades quietly becoming the festival that musicians themselves name when asked which one they would attend if they were not working. The altitude changes everything. Sound behaves differently in a canyon; the mountains hold the last of the light until almost ten at night in June, so the headline sets happen in a kind of alpenglow that nobody who has seen it ever quite shuts up about. The crowd calls itself Festivarians, unironically, and the culture has real rules — you set a tarp at dawn, you do not talk during ballads, you share your spot. After the main stage ends, Nightgrass shows run in small rooms around town until the early hours, and those are where the genuinely strange collaborations happen, because everyone in the lineup is staying within four blocks of each other. Worth it? If you care about players rather than production — about what happens when people who can really play are put somewhere beautiful and left alone — this is the one. It is not for someone who wants a spectacle, a light show, or an easy weekend. You are camping or paying alpine-town prices, the air is thin enough to matter, and the weather does what it likes. What to know: tickets go through a lottery and four-day passes have historically sold out long before any lineup is announced, which tells you what people are actually buying. Arrive a day early to adjust to the elevation and drink far more water than feels reasonable. Bring layers for a forty-degree temperature swing in a single day. Sam Bush has played essentially every year since the beginning; locals will tell you the festival is not real until he is on stage. It earns its place here because it is the clearest example of a festival that never scaled itself into something else. Fifty-four years, same canyon, same size, same rules. Most people reading this will never go. Knowing it happens every June anyway is its own small correction to how the world feels.

FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 — Brazil
Jun 24 – Aug 22, 2027 Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo,…

Every four years somebody at work has a stream open with the sound off, and you can tell from their face what just happened. You always think the same thing in that moment. One of these times you are going to stop watching this on a screen. In June 2027 the Women's World Cup goes to Brazil, and it is the first time the tournament has ever been held anywhere in South America. Not Europe, not North America, not Australia and New Zealand — the country where the game is closer to a first language than a pastime. Thirty-two teams, sixty-four matches, eight cities: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza. It opens at the Maracana on 24 June and the final comes back to the same stadium on 25 July. What that stadium means is most of what makes this different. The Maracana opened in 1950 and has been the room where Brazilian football keeps its grief and its records — the 1950 final, the 2014 final, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics. Roughly seventy-nine thousand seats. Brazil won the hosting rights in May 2024, and there is a detail in the schedule that regular tournament-watchers notice immediately: the opener and the final are in the same building. That is not standard. It means the month has a shape — it leaves from a place and returns to it — and if you are choosing one match to be at, the people who plan these trips will tell you the opener is the cheaper ticket into the more famous room. Who this is actually for: not the person who wants a holiday with football attached. Brazilian winter in the south means Porto Alegre can be genuinely cold in July while Fortaleza and Recife sit near the equator and do not — eight cities across a country larger than the continental United States is a travel problem, not a walkable itinerary. Pick a city and let the draw come to you rather than chasing a team across four time zones. But if you are the person who has spent three tournaments saying next time, this is the one worth breaking the pattern for, and not because the football will be better. Because a full house in Brazil does not sound like a full house anywhere else, and the women's game has never once been handed that particular room. Most people reading this will not go, and the group chat it starts is worth something on its own. For the ones who might: the draw has not happened, so nobody knows yet who plays where — which means right now the only decision available is the city, and that is the decision that books out first. Tickets and registration run through FIFA. The tournament runs 24 June to 25 July 2027, opening and closing at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

That is the entire case for showing up on the first full public day instead of easing in over the weekend. This is when the building finally hits capacity and the studio panels start dropping licensing reveals and surprise first episodes. Anisong sets bring Japanese recording artists who almost never play the States. Voice actors and creators sign all afternoon. The floor and Artist Alley run flat out from open to close — hundreds of independent artists selling prints, charms, and original work — and the sweet spot for actually shopping it is early afternoon, before the prime-time panels pull the crowd away. The Metro drops you a short walk from the doors. A main badge covers daytime programming, panels, the floor, and the alley; the big concerts ticket separately. Essence Festival of Culture 2027 — New Orleans, LA
Every day · Next Jul 2 Caesars Superdome, 1500 Sugar Bowl…

Half a million people descend on New Orleans every July and for four days Black joy is not a metaphor — it is the entire program. The Essence Festival of Culture returns to the Caesars Superdome on July 2–5, 2027, for four days of music, empowerment, and celebration that draws over half a million people to the city. The main stage fills the Superdome with headliners who define the sound of Black music — past Essence stages have held Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, and Janet Jackson. The daytime Empowerment Experience at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is equally massive: panels on wellness, entrepreneurship, beauty, finance, and culture featuring the voices shaping the national conversation. Essence is not a music festival with cultural programming bolted on. It is a cultural institution with a concert attached. The people who come back every year will tell you the hallway conversations change their lives more than the headline sets. The fashion alone is worth the trip — thousands of people dressed like they are the main character in their own story, because at Essence, they are. What separates Essence from every other major music festival is that it was built by and for the community it celebrates. Founded in 1995 as a one-time event tied to the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine, it outgrew its origin immediately and became an annual pilgrimage. The Superdome concerts are the centerpiece, but the daytime programming is what makes people fly across the country — panels where founders share real numbers, beauty showcases where Black hair and skin are the standard, wellness sessions that don't treat Black health as an afterthought, and networking lounges where the person sitting next to you might be the connection that changes your career. New Orleans is not incidental to the experience. The city's food, music, and culture wrap around the festival like a second program. The restaurants extend hours. The jazz clubs fill up. Bourbon Street becomes an extension of the party. People plan their Essence wardrobe months in advance because the sidewalk fashion outside the Superdome is its own spectacle. July 2–5, 2027. New Orleans, LA. Tickets via Ticketmaster and essencefestival.com.

Newport Folk Festival 2027 — Newport, RI
Jul 23, 2027 Fort Adams State Park, 90 Fort Ada…

A handful of concerts in your life you cannot prove happened. Nobody filmed them, nothing got posted, and the only record is the several thousand people who were standing on the grass when it did. Almost nowhere is built to produce that any more. One place still is. Newport Folk Festival returns to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island on July 23 through 25, 2027 — three days on a peninsula in Narragansett Bay, inside the walls of a nineteenth-century coastal fort. This is where Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar in 1965 and split American music in half. That it is still running, still small, and still one of the hardest tickets in the country is the whole story. The setting does most of the work. Stages sit on grass with the harbor directly behind them; boats anchor offshore and people listen from the water. Because the site is physically constrained, the festival cannot grow, which has protected it from everything that happened to festivals elsewhere. The programming reflects that: folk here is a loose and generous word covering Americana, indie, gospel, country and whatever the artists feel like doing. The defining tradition is the unannounced guest — collaborations assembled on site, sets that appear on no schedule, and a house rule that what happens is not to be filmed and streamed. People who go talk about it afterwards in the tone of someone describing a rumour they can confirm. Worth it? For anyone who believes live music is supposed to be unrepeatable rather than reproducible, this is close to the top of the list in America. It is not for someone who wants to see a specific headliner — that is not what is being sold. You are buying the weekend, not the lineup. What to know: passes routinely sell out before a single artist is announced, so the calendar matters more than the poster. Fort Adams gets full sun and hard wind off the bay; bring a hat and a layer for both. Newport is a small resort town in high season, so lodging is booked far in advance and the ferry and shuttle are genuinely better ideas than driving. Weekdays before and after the festival are worth building into the trip. It is on the Nation's Best list because of what it refused. It stayed the size of its field, kept its no-stream rule, and let the surprise remain a surprise in an era that monetises exactly that. Knowing it is out there, every July, on a fort in a harbor, is worth something even to the people who will never get a ticket.

Lollapalooza 2027 — Chicago, IL
Jul 29, 2027 Grant Park, 337 E Randolph St, Chi…

A music festival in the middle of a downtown, with skyscrapers directly behind the stage, is a completely different object from one in a field. You are not escaping the city to see music. The city is standing there watching with you. Lollapalooza occupies Grant Park in Chicago every summer, and the 2027 edition opens Thursday, July 29. It began in 1991 as Perry Farrell's travelling alternative-rock caravan, died, and was resurrected in 2005 as a destination festival rooted in one park — which turned out to be the version that lasted. It now anchors a global family of Lollapaloozas across South America and Europe, but Grant Park is the original and the one the lineup is built for. The experience is defined by the skyline and the humidity. Chicago in late July is heavy, thunderstorms roll in off the lake with very little warning, and evacuations are a genuine part of the festival's history rather than a hypothetical. When the sun goes down and the buildings light up behind the main stage, it produces a specific feeling that no rural festival can manufacture — the sense of a city temporarily handing over its front lawn. Worth it? For a first large festival, this is the most forgiving option in America. It is walkable, it is on public transit, you can sleep in a real hotel bed, and if you need a break you are ten minutes from an air-conditioned building. That convenience is the whole pitch. It is not for someone seeking the immersive, off-grid, lose-your-phone kind of festival — Lollapalooza is emphatically in the world, not apart from it. What to know: the park is long and narrow, so the two main stages sit at opposite ends and the walk between them takes real time — plan for twenty minutes, not five. Free water refill stations exist and the lines are shorter than the bar lines. Storm evacuation is orderly and well-drilled; follow it and do not treat it as optional. Buying the four-day pass and skipping a day is normal behaviour, not waste. It earns a place here because it is the festival that proved a city could host one permanently, and because a skyline behind a stage is an image that stays with people who will never buy a ticket. Opens Thursday, July 29, 2027, in Grant Park.

Aug 6, 2027 Golden Gate Park, 501 Stanyan St, …

Fog is the headliner. Everyone who has been will tell you this and everyone who has not been assumes it is a joke, and then they arrive in Golden Gate Park in August wearing shorts and spend eighty dollars on a hoodie at the merch tent. Outside Lands is San Francisco's flagship music festival, held every August in Golden Gate Park, and the 2027 edition runs August 6 through 8. It draws around seventy-five thousand people a day across a site that winds through eucalyptus groves and open meadows, which is the thing that separates it from the flat dusty fields most large festivals occupy. You walk between stages under actual trees. The sound carries strangely in the fog and the light goes silver rather than gold. What it feels like is a city showing off. Wine Lands and Beer Lands are not concession stands, they are curated selections from Northern California producers, and Outside Lands is one of the only major festivals where a meaningful share of attendees are genuinely there for the food. The Bay Area's restaurant scene sets up in a field. People plan their day around a sandwich. Worth it? If you like music but have aged out of standing in ninety-eight-degree heat for nine hours, this is the festival that solves that problem. The weather is the selling point disguised as the drawback — you will be cold, and you will not be suffering. It is not for someone chasing a specific headliner at any cost; sightlines at the main stage are difficult and the crowd is enormous. It is for someone who wants a full day in a beautiful place with music in it. Before you go: dress in layers and mean it — mornings are grey, afternoons can be genuinely warm, and after sunset in the park it drops fast and hard. The polo field stages and the Sutro stage are a real walk apart, so pick a lane rather than trying to catch everything. Public transit and rideshare both jam badly at the end of the night; the N Judah and a fifteen-minute walk beat waiting. Cash is largely useless, the site is cashless. It is on this list because it is the rare festival whose location is inseparable from the experience. You cannot move Outside Lands somewhere sunny without destroying it, and knowing that a city can hold something this specific is worth carrying around. August 6 through 8, 2027, at Golden Gate Park.

Iowa State Fair 2027 — Des Moines, IA
Aug 12, 2027 Iowa State Fairgrounds, 3000 E Gra…

The Iowa State Fair is the one every other state fair is measured against — eleven days on 450 acres in Des Moines that draw well over a million people, more than a third of the state's population, to a single set of fairgrounds. It is the fair that Phil Stong's novel and the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical State Fair were built on, and it is one of the few places in America where agriculture, politics, live music and deep-fried everything occupy the same afternoon without anyone finding that strange. The 2027 edition carries the theme It's All That! What it feels like is harder to explain than it should be. You walk in past livestock barns where teenagers have been sleeping beside their animals for a week, and twenty minutes later you are standing in front of a life-sized cow sculpted entirely out of butter, behind glass, refrigerated, treated with the reverence of a national monument. There is a hill where people sit on the grass and watch nothing in particular. There is food served on sticks that has no business being on a stick. The Grandstand books real touring acts at night. The whole thing runs on a kind of sincerity that is genuinely disorienting if you have spent the last decade online — nobody here is being ironic about the pork chop. Is it worth it? If you are the kind of person who wants to understand America rather than have opinions about it, yes, unreservedly. This is not a nostalgia exhibit; it is a working agricultural fair that a million people actually attend. It is not for you if you need everything curated, air-conditioned and under an hour. It rewards a full day, comfortable shoes and a willingness to talk to strangers who will absolutely talk back. What to know before you go: it runs August 12 through 22, 2027. Go on a weekday if you can — the weekend crowds are genuinely enormous, and 2026 set an attendance record above 1.2 million. Arrive early for the livestock competitions, which are the actual heart of the thing and which most visitors skip entirely. Budget cash for food. Presidential candidates turn up here in cycle years for a reason, and the Soapbox is worth standing at for twenty minutes regardless of your politics. It is on this list because it is one of the last genuinely mass American gatherings that has not been sorted by demographic. Everyone goes. That is the cultural moment, and it is rarer every year.

Aug 26, 2027 Minnesota State Fairgrounds, 1265 …

Nobody moves to Minnesota for the weather. They stay for the twelve days at the end of August when the entire state agrees to stand in the same field and eat things off sticks. The Minnesota State Fair calls itself the Great Minnesota Get-Together, which sounds like civic boosterism until you see the numbers: it is the largest state fair in the United States by average daily attendance, second only to Texas in total, and it draws around two million people to a single 320-acre plot between Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The 2027 fair runs August 26 through Labor Day, September 6. The thing first-timers underestimate is the density. This is not a midway bolted onto a parking lot; it is a permanent small city with its own street grid, streetlights and buildings that sit empty fifty-three weeks a year. You walk past a barn of sleeping dairy cattle, then a stage where a polka band is playing to four hundred people, then a machinery hall, then somebody deep-frying something that should not be fried. Crop art — pictures made entirely of seeds, frequently political, occasionally vicious — has its own competitive category and a crowd three deep. And then there is the butter. Since 1965, the reigning Princess Kay of the Milky Way has had her likeness carved from a ninety-pound block of Grade AA butter while she sits inside a rotating refrigerated booth kept at forty degrees, in public, for roughly six hours. Her sculpture is carved over the fair's first two days; one of the finalists is carved each day after that, through Labor Day. People bring chairs. That single detail tells you more about this place than any attendance figure. Is it worth flying for? If you are drawn to the version of America that still shows up in person for things — that votes on pie, that lines up to look at a chicken — then yes, and it will reorganize what you thought the Midwest was. If you need to be somewhere with a curated food scene and short lines, do not come; you will spend twelve dollars on cheese curds and stand for an hour to do it. Practical intelligence: gates open at seven in the morning and admission closes at eight-thirty in the evening, five-thirty on Labor Day. The first two hours are the only quiet ones and the only time the butter booth is approachable. Grandstand concerts are separately ticketed. Park off-site and take a shuttle; locals have been doing that for decades. A state that spends most of the year indoors and apart puts on twelve days of being outdoors and together, and treats it as the most important thing on the calendar. That is not a fair. That is a religious observance with corn dogs. August 26 to September 6, 2027. Minnesota State Fairgrounds, 1265 Snelling Ave N, Falcon Heights. Admission tickets through the fair.

Anime NYC 2027 — New York, NY
Aug 26, 2027 Jacob K. Javits Convention Center,…

New York went without a major anime convention for an embarrassingly long time given how many people there wanted one, and when it finally arrived it grew faster than almost any convention in American history. Anime NYC now fills the Javits Center on the far west side of Manhattan and has become the East Coast's largest anime event, with the industry treating it as a genuine announcement platform rather than a regional stop. What separates it from the older conventions is that it feels like it belongs to the city rather than to a hotel complex. Attendees spill into Hell's Kitchen and midtown between panels; the after-hours culture happens in restaurants and karaoke rooms rather than in hotel hallways. Inside, the industry presence is unusually heavy — Japanese publishers and studios send real delegations, there are manga creators doing signings who rarely leave Japan, and the concert programming has brought over acts that had never played the United States. The dealers hall is large and the artist alley is genuinely excellent, benefiting from the density of illustrators who already live within a train ride. Is it worth it? If you follow manga and the industry side of anime rather than only the shows, this is the best convention in the country for you, because the guests are the people who actually make it. If you want a warm, sprawling, all-night fan convention, the hotel-based cons in the Midwest and Maryland do that better — Javits closes and you go out into Manhattan, which is a different experience and an expensive one. What to know before you go: badges sell out, sometimes months ahead, and there is no walk-up. Javits is a long avenue walk from the nearest subway; budget the time. Late August in New York is hot and humid and the costume math should account for that. Ticketed signings are allocated by lottery — enter early. And eat outside the building; you are in one of the best food cities on earth. It earns a place here because the speed at which it grew is the clearest single piece of evidence about how large this audience actually became, and that is worth knowing even from across the country. Anime NYC 2027 runs August 26–29, 2027 at the Javits Center.

PAX West 2027 — Seattle, WA
Sep 3, 2027 Seattle Convention Center Arch Bui…

The medium you grew up on has spent thirty years being described to you by people who do not play it. You already know what it actually is — the thing you did with friends on a couch, the thing that got you through a bad year, the thing that is obviously an art form and obviously also just fun. Once a year over Labor Day weekend, Seattle stops arguing about that entirely and just holds the party. PAX West is the original PAX, started in 2004 by the people behind Penny Arcade as a convention built for players rather than for press and buyers. That origin still shows. Unlike the industry trade shows, nearly everything here is hands-on: you queue, you sit down, you actually play the unreleased thing, and the person explaining it to you is frequently the person who made it. It occupies the Seattle Convention Center across two buildings downtown and pulls tens of thousands of people into a few walkable blocks. The feel of it is less corporate than people expect. Whole halls are given over to things with no commercial purpose at all — freeplay rooms full of console setups, a tabletop area where you can borrow from a library of hundreds of games, handheld lounges, a legitimately good concert lineup at night. The indie section, called the PAX Rising floor, is where most veterans will tell you to spend your time, because that is where you play something made by four people in a room and recognize that it is better than most of what is upstairs. Is it worth it? If you actually play games, yes — this is the rare convention built around doing rather than watching. If you are coming hoping to see enormous AAA reveals, be warned that those increasingly happen in online showcases instead, and the show has drifted toward indies and community, which most attendees consider an improvement. It is for the person who wants to play fifteen things they have never heard of. What to know before you go: the show runs 10 AM to midnight Friday through Sunday, which is the single most useful fact about it — PAX is an evening convention as much as a daytime one, and the halls after 8 PM are calmer, the lines shorter, and the tournaments and concerts are running. Sunday and Monday are noticeably less crowded. The convention center is split between the Arch and Summit buildings, so read which one your panel is in before you walk. PAX West 2027 runs September 3 through 6 at the Seattle Convention Center, Arch Building, 705 Pike Street. Badges sell out; buy early.
