Seventeen days, the first time Los Angeles has ever run a citywide jazz festival, with the city itself as the venue: over a hundred and seventy-five free concerts, a run of them in public parks in neighborhoods that rarely get a stage, a hundred and fifty nights inside small venues and restaurants owned by women and people of color, and a closing weekend on the sand at Dockweiler where the Pacific handles the reverb. You fill it on the bus, at the laundromat, in the fifteen minutes between when your kid falls asleep and when you do, and you have never read a line of it out loud to another human being. This festival was built by people who did exactly that and then stopped. Five days of free events scattered through the neighborhood's bars, restaurants, and parks, made by writers who live in Los Feliz for writers who live in Los Feliz. An opening party at Big Bar Alcove. A personal essay workshop at Fred 62. A poetry night where somebody will tell you in complete earnest that poets are the new pop stars, and you will half believe them. A Saturday morning workshop on taste and scent at Tabula Rasa, an anti-racist writing circle at Barnsdall, a local POC voices panel, a writer and activist mixer. A city's parks sit mostly empty on a Friday evening, unless someone decides live music across three neighborhoods can make Carlsbad the place people actually want to be, not just commute through. The TGIF Concerts in the Parks series has made that argument every summer for years. The 2026 season features nine concerts across three Carlsbad parks: Stagecoach Community Park, Calavera Hills Community Park, and Alga Norte Community Park. Solana Beach and the Belly Up Tavern co-sponsor this free Thursday evening concert series every summer, and 2026 runs seven weeks from mid-July through late August. The stage sits at Fletcher Cove Park, a pocket park perched right on the sand where the bluff meets the beach. Bring low-back beach chairs and a picnic — no alcohol, no BBQs, no pets, which sounds restrictive until you realize it means the crowd is mostly families and couples who came specifically to listen. AFROPUNK Brooklyn 2026 ran two days at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park — Jazmine Sullivan, Flying Lotus, Joey Bada$$, Vince Staples and Baby Tate across a weekend built by and for the artists, organizers and culture makers who refuse to be sorted into one category. Founded in 2005 as an answer to the whitewashing of punk and rock spaces, AFROPUNK has become the defining gathering of Black alternative culture in America. The moment you are inside, you understand this is not a music festival in the ordinary sense. It is a fashion show, a protest, a family reunion and a concert happening at once inside one park. Sets move between neo-soul, hip-hop, punk, afrobeats and club music, sometimes inside a single performance. The Spinthrift Market carries independent Black designers and makers. Bites n Beats brings in some of the best street food in New York. Activism Row hands a whole section over to live muralists and community organizing, and people genuinely stop and read it. If you have ever felt like you sit at the intersection of too many things to be claimed by any one scene, this was built for you. It is not for anyone who wants a frictionless corporate festival. The Bandshell is a small room by festival standards — roughly two thousand seats in the plaza and about five thousand more on the surrounding lawn — and that scale is doing real work. You are close enough to read what everyone chose to put on, which at AFROPUNK is half the reason to come. Arrive early. The plaza fills first, lawn sightlines go quickly, and by around 3pm the ground between the stage and the concession row stops moving in any direction. Check your train before you leave — Prospect Park's entrances sit far apart, and picking the wrong one adds twenty minutes on foot. Clear bags only. Free water stations run through the grounds, so an empty bottle is worth more than a full one. Twenty years on, this is the rare weekend that hip-hop, punk, jazz, fashion and organizing all claim as their own, and it has spawned editions in Atlanta, Paris and Johannesburg. The people who were there spend the rest of the year chasing that feeling somewhere else, and telling each other where they found it.

Iron Mountain Road corkscrews through South Dakota's most dramatic terrain. The rally itself spawns music stages, vendor villages, stunt shows, bike shows, and pop-up bars across a 50-mile radius — the Buffalo Chip alone hosts major touring acts nightly. The diversity of the crowd surprises first-timers: veterans and newcomers, engineers and mechanics, people who rode three states to get here and people who flew in and rented a bike.
