North Park Farmers Market 2026 — Every Thursday
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 Free 3001 North Park Way, San Diego, CA…

You go for tomatoes. You come home with tamales, a bottle of hot sauce you did not know existed, and a loaf of bread that will not survive the drive. This happens every week and you have stopped pretending to be surprised by it. Thursday afternoon into the evening, one block off the middle of North Park, certified farms from around the county setting up beside bakers, cheese people, and whoever is handling pastries this season. The spread is what a farmers market is supposed to be rather than what most of them settle for being. EBT works here, and Market Match doubles it — spend ten dollars in benefits, get ten dollars in market money back. That single detail tells you exactly who this market believes it belongs to, which is everybody. The point was never novelty. The point is that it is there, in the same spot, every single week. Go often enough and the vendors start setting your usual aside before you ask.

North Park Thursday Market — Weekly Farmers Market, San Diego
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 North Park Thursday Market, 3000 N…

Every Thursday from 3 to 7:30 PM, the stretch of North Park Way between Granada Avenue and Ray Street turns into the kind of market that makes you wonder why you ever bought tomatoes from a grocery store. The North Park Thursday Market is a year-round farmers market with fresh produce, prepared foods, flowers, baked goods, apparel, and the particular energy of a neighborhood that actually uses its sidewalks. The vendors are local, the produce is seasonal, and the crowd is a cross-section of North Park — young families, restaurant workers on their day off, dog walkers doubling back for a second pass, and regulars who have been coming since the market started and still discover something new. The market sits in the heart of one of San Diego's most walkable neighborhoods, surrounded by craft cocktail bars, coffee roasters, and independent shops that all benefit from the Thursday foot traffic. No tickets, no reservation needed. Just show up on Thursday afternoon and walk slowly. The prepared food stalls alone are worth the trip.

Murrieta Market Nights (Murrieta Night Market) 2026
Every other Thursday · Next Oct 8 Free Corner of Juniper St & Washington …

Downtown does not usually feel like this on a Thursday. Then the barricades go up on The Alleyway, the smell of somebody's fryer reaches the corner before you do, and a street you normally drive through without looking becomes a place you stand in for four hours. The vendor mix rotates, which is the whole charm — regulars with a following next to somebody selling a thing they made at their kitchen table and decided, this week, to finally show people. Food trucks, artisan goods, handmade work, small business pop-ups, live music, and a downtown actually using its own streets instead of saving them for cars. It runs the first and third Thursday of the month through the season, evenings, free to walk into, with parking nearby. Full schedule at murrietamarketnights.com. Bring the neighbor who keeps saying there is nothing to do out here. Let the fryer make the argument for you.

PB Night Market — Pacific Beach Thursday Night Market
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 Bayard St & Garnet Ave, Pacific Be…

The sun dropped behind the Pacific ten minutes ago and the salt air is still warm. Fire pits are already lit at the corner of Bayard and Garnet, and somewhere between the dumpling stand and the taco truck a guitarist is playing something that makes you walk slower than you meant to. PB Night Market is Pacific Beach's Thursday night ritual — a curated weekly market running 5 to 9:30 PM with nine to twelve rotating food vendors, live music, lawn games, and the kind of firepit seating that turns strangers into conversationalists. Curator Jay Michaels launched it in February 2026 and intentionally chose Thursday to fill the gap between the Tuesday PB Farmers Market and the Wednesday OB Farmers Market. The result is the night Pacific Beach exhales into the weekend a day early. Vendors rotate weekly, which means regulars come back to discover what changed. The crowd is beach-local plus the occasional rideshare from North Park. The vibe is backyard party energy with better food and no cleanup. One hundred fifty steps from the ocean — close enough to hear it if the music pauses. Every Thursday, 5 to 9:30 PM. Corner of Bayard and Garnet in Pacific Beach.

101 Night Market — Van Nuys
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 16955 Sherman Way, Van Nuys, CA 91…

The craving hits around seven on a Thursday — not for a restaurant, not for delivery, just for somewhere alive? A parking lot in Van Nuys transforms into the thing your neighborhood was missing: a hundred vendors deep, smoke rising from grills you've never tried, the kind of energy that makes strangers share tables. LA's fastest-growing night market launched in 2025 and never stopped. Every Thursday through Sunday, 5 PM to 11 PM, the corner of Sherman Way fills with skewers, tacos al pastor carved to order, mochi donuts still warm, Thai iced tea poured from steel pitchers, and a crowd that looks exactly like the San Fernando Valley — which is to say, like everybody. The first-timers come for the food. The regulars come because it replaced the couch. You don't need a reservation. You don't need a group text. You just show up, eat something you've never heard of, and leave wondering why every neighborhood doesn't have this. Free parking, free entry. 16955 Sherman Way, Van Nuys. Thursday through Sunday, 5 to 11 PM.

Murrieta Rod Run 2026
Tomorrow · Oct 9 – Oct 10 Historic Washington Ave (Hwy 395),…

You hear it before you see it — the low burble of five hundred old engines idling down a main street that's been closed just for them. For one weekend, downtown Murrieta hands Washington Avenue over to the cars, and the exhaust note carries a full block, which is exactly how the whole town knows it's on. Friday is Cruise Night: engines lit, windows down, the avenue glowing as the cars roll through while the downtown businesses stay open late for it — free to just stand on the curb and watch. Saturday is Show and Shine, the cars parked and judged, owners leaning on fenders talking shop, spectators drifting hood to hood. Pre-war hot rods, muscle cars restored down to the bolt, lowriders, builds that took somebody a decade. Thirty-plus years in, it pulls fifteen thousand people and stays the biggest car event in southwest Riverside County — not a mall-lot meet, an open-street block party on old Highway 395. Washington Avenue closes for it; park in the downtown lots or the side streets off Old Town Front, and get there before 9am Saturday for the prime spots. Free both days, no registration to come watch. If you follow SoCal car culture, it's already on your fall calendar.

Niteharts Festival 2026 — Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego
Tomorrow · Oct 9 varies Snapdragon Stadium, 2101 Stadium W…

The bass hits your chest before you find the stage. Two strangers next to you are screaming the same drop at each other, and for a weekend that is the only language anybody here speaks. What separates this from a festival that merely landed in your city: two San Diego kids built it. ISOxo and Knock2 came up through the same warehouse parties and late-night sets that shaped the sound, and they curate it like people who still have something to prove to their hometown. The lineup leans underground — names that fill group chats and never billboards. Last year sold out, so it grew from two days into a full three-day weekend. Snapdragon Stadium, ages 18 and up. It runs cashless with no re-entry, so once you are inside you are inside. GA and VIP through Front Gate Tickets. Send it to whoever you were standing next to the first time a drop actually got you.

Every October, after the sun sets over Balboa Park and the last tour group files out, the San Diego Zoo transforms into something your kids will talk about until next Halloween. HalGLOWeen turns the zoo's pathways into a glowing trail of costumes, dance parties, live entertainment, and the particular kind of magic that only happens when a five-year-old in a dinosaur costume stands two feet from an actual tortoise and doesn't know which one is more impressive. The event runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout October, keeping the zoo open until 9 PM. Costumed characters roam the grounds. Themed food specials, musical performances, and interactive stations are scattered through the exhibits. Kids 11 and under get in free during October when accompanied by an adult with valid admission -- which means the entry price is basically one adult ticket for the whole family. HalGLOWeen is included with regular zoo admission or membership -- no separate ticket required. The zoo is at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park.

Cruisin' Grand — Escondido Friday Night Classic Car Cruise 2026
Every Friday · Next Oct 9 Grand Avenue, Escondido, CA 92025

Every Friday night from late April through October, the main drag of downtown Escondido fills with machines that were built before most of the spectators were born. Cruisin' Grand is not a car show with roped-off displays and velvet barriers. It is a rolling parade of 500-plus American-made classics, customs, muscle cars, and hot rods that idle down Grand Avenue while five thousand people line the sidewalks, lean against the storefronts, and pretend they are not staring at a 1957 Bel Air like it is a religious artifact. The restaurants along Grand set up patio seating. The ice cream shops do their best night of the week. The exhaust notes mix with the rockabilly playing from someone's tailgate. Nobody is in a hurry. That is the entire culture: the opposite of hurry. If you have ever wanted to see what Southern California car culture looks like when it is not behind a museum rope, Cruisin' Grand is the answer. Every Friday, 5 to 8 PM through October. Grand Avenue between Centre City Parkway and Ivy Street, Escondido. Free.

Huntington Beach Pier Farmers Market — Weekly Fridays
Every Friday · Next Oct 9 Free 300 Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington …

Most farmers markets are a morning errand. This one runs late enough that the light changes while you are still standing in it — the produce vendors start breaking down, the pier lights come on, and the street quietly turns into an evening. The certified growers have been coming to this spot long enough that it developed a character of its own: beach town, farmland close by, and enough prepared food that people arrive with no plan for dinner and leave with one. The Walnut Ave stretch beside it is a version of Huntington Beach that never makes the tourism photos — the one where locals are just buying peaches on the way home from work. Friday afternoons, year-round, free to browse, with the pier a two-minute walk from the market entrance. Go with the person who is always telling you to eat better, and let them win one.

Old Town Temecula Farmers Market
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 Free 6th and Front St, Old Town Temecul…

Every Saturday morning, the heart of Old Town Temecula comes alive along 6th and Front Street, where local farmers, growers, and makers gather to sell their week's harvest. The market runs year-round from 8am to 12:30pm — a genuine neighborhood ritual that draws locals in week after week. You'll find seasonal produce picked days, not weeks, before sale: heirloom tomatoes, stone fruit, fresh herbs, and greens from farms across the Temecula Valley and surrounding Inland Empire. Beyond produce, the market features artisan goods — fresh-baked sourdough, wildflower honey, handmade jams, cut flowers, and handcrafted goods from regional makers. Old Town Temecula sets the scene: cobblestone streets, frontier-era storefronts, and the Temecula City Hall clock tower a few blocks away. The market is a natural gateway into Old Town's wine tasting rooms, vintage shops, and breakfast cafes that stay busy on Saturday mornings. Free to attend. Street parking available on 6th Street, Old Town Front Street, and in the adjacent Old Town Garage. Stroller and pet-friendly.

Silver Lake Farmers Market 2026 — Sunset Triangle Plaza
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 Free Griffith Park Blvd and Edgecliffe …

Somebody looked at a wedge of asphalt where three streets collide and decided people needed it more than cars did. That decision is the reason you can stand in the middle of a Los Angeles intersection on a Saturday morning eating a peach. The market that moves in is small, genuinely small by the standards of this city, and that is exactly why it works. The vendors know the regulars. The regulars know whose citrus is peaking this week and will tell you unprompted. Everybody is standing within fifty feet of somebody they recognize, which is not a thing that happens often here. The produce is certified, the prepared-food stalls rotate, and the neighborhood arguing about every decision affecting a twelve-block radius is the most reliable feature on the calendar. Griffith Park Boulevard at Edgecliffe, Saturday mornings, free, and walk over if you can. This is the errand that quietly turns into your favorite part of the week.

You go for tomatoes and leave with stone fruit, a jar of honey, a loaf still warm through the paper, and a coffee you had not planned on. Old Town on a Saturday morning does something to a person's schedule. The boardwalk and the cobblestone make it feel like a town rather than an errand, the air comes warm off the valley before the heat means anything by it, and the market pulls from the growers, farms and wineries that make this the most productive agricultural pocket in Southern California. Olive oil pressed nearby. Bread from an actual oven. Somebody playing guitar on the corner and nobody in a hurry to be anywhere. Ynez Road in Old Town Temecula, free, every Saturday morning. La Jolla Art & Wine Festival 2026
In 2 days · Oct 10 Girard Ave & Prospect St, La Jolla…

You turn a corner with a glass in your hand, find something you were not expecting, and then get to ask the person who made it what they were thinking. That is the trick a gallery can never pull. It makes discovering art feel like a party you were already at, which is a completely different proposition from being quiet in a white room. More than 170 juried artists set up across painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, glass, woodworking, photography, and mixed media, and the jurying is why it holds up as one of the more seriously curated outdoor art events in the state. The wine and craft beer are what turn viewing into a neighborhood gathering. October in the village is the right weather for it too, cool mornings, warm afternoons, and the low light that makes outdoor work look its best. Several blocks close to traffic, so walk in from the edges. Take the friend who always says they do not know anything about art.

Autumn Festival at San Diego Zoo Safari Park 2026
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 San Diego Zoo Safari Park, 15500 S…

Kids raised in Southern California grow up without a real fall — no turning leaves, no frost on the window, none of the seasonal furniture the rest of the country takes for granted. So the Safari Park builds one for them, out in the open valley where the giraffes graze. Every weekend in October the grounds turn into a harvest: a walk-through maze, country dancing led by scarecrow hosts, live bluegrass drifting over the savanna, fall-themed food, and the strange delight of watching rhinos and cheetahs go about their day while a fiddle plays. It is autumn assembled on purpose for children who have never seen the genuine article, and it lands anyway — because the wonder was never really about the weather. Saturdays and Sundays through October, included with park admission. Come for the animals you expected and stay for the season you did not know your kids were missing. Some falls you have to build by hand. This is the one San Diego builds every year.

Your kid picked the costume in August, has changed it twice since, and will change it again the morning of. This is known. The whole event was built by people who know it. Brick-or-Treat turns the resort into a Halloween built at kid height. Candy stations scattered across the park, characters in costume handing it out, a monster dance floor going all afternoon, themed builds that exist only for the season. What separates it from every other theme-park overlay is what is missing: no scare zones, no fog in a dark corridor, no teenager in zombie makeup lunging at a toddler. Just a five-year-old in a full Batman suit being taken completely seriously by every adult in the building, which is a rare public service. SeaWorld's Halloween Spooktacular is the daytime counterpart to the after-dark Howl-O-Scream, built for families with kids who love costumes but are not ready for the kind of jump scares that make adults question their life choices. Running every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from September 11 through November 2, the Spooktacular fills the park with trick-or-treat trails, costumed characters, and the California debut of the all-new Baby Shark Halloween Show -- which, if you have a child under six, is the kind of sentence that makes you immediately check your calendar. Included with regular park admission, no separate ticket required. The seasonal trick-or-treat trail winds through the park with stops at themed stations. 2026 Kokoro Craft Show — Japanese American National Museum, Little Tokyo
In 2 days · Oct 10 Japanese American National Museum,…

The bowl your family eats out of on New Year's is chipped, and you have been meaning to replace it for four years, and every store version looks like it was made by a machine that has never eaten out of a bowl. Once a year the museum fills with makers working in a specific tradition — ceramics, textiles, woodwork, paper — where the craft carries something you cannot get from a catalogue. Kokoro means heart, and the show is named that on purpose: these are objects made by people who learned from people. Free admission, one day, ten to four. What separates it from a general craft fair is the continuity. A number of the artists here are working in forms their grandparents worked in, sometimes with their grandparents' tools, and they will tell you which is which if you ask. You will also find people who came to the tradition sideways — a potter who is not Japanese American at all but apprenticed for nine years and can explain exactly why the glaze pools the way it does. Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free. Japanese American National Museum, 100 N Central Ave, Little Tokyo.

Great American Beer Festival 2026 — Denver, CO
In 2 days · Oct 10 – Oct 11 Levitt Pavilion, Denver, CO

For the first time in four decades, the country's longest-running craft beer competition steps outside - two days under the open Denver sky, 300 breweries, the whole thing rethought after 40 years indoors. What happens on the floor is a curated education in American brewing. Hundreds of breweries pour samples across organized sections by style - sours, lagers, IPAs, stouts, sessionable ales, and experimental categories that did not exist as named styles ten years ago - and the pouring representatives are often the brewers themselves. A conversation that starts at a sample cup can end with an invitation to tour the brewery. The density of craft knowledge on this floor is unmatched anywhere in the country. It is worth attending for anyone who drinks craft beer with intent, for people who want to understand why American craft brewing became a global benchmark, or for anyone curious what beer tastes like when it is made by someone who cares more about the liquid than the label - but it is not a music festival, it is a tasting event first. Tickets go on sale in July, starting with a presale for Brewers Association and American Homebrewers Association members, and public tickets typically sell out within hours. The outdoor Levitt Pavilion venue means weather planning for October in Denver. Sessions run 12pm to 4pm both days. Designated driver tickets are available. Drink water. GABF has crowned the best American craft beers since 1982, and the competition results announced at the festival shape what breweries brew and what distributors carry for the following year - a GABF medal is the craft brewing equivalent of a Michelin star, and the public tasting gives you access to the same beers the judges evaluated, poured by the people who made them. American craft brewing is one of the defining cultural exports of the past forty years, a grass-roots rebellion against industrial uniformity that built its own infrastructure, vocabulary, and community from scratch, and GABF is where that community gathers annually to declare what it has accomplished. The Great American Beer Festival 2026 takes place at Levitt Pavilion in Denver, CO.

Del Mar Farmers Market
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 Free 1050 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 9…

Noon is a strange hour for a farmers market, and it turns out to be exactly the right one. Late enough that you have had a proper morning already. Early enough that you are home again before the coastal traffic thickens and ruins the rest of the afternoon. The vendors are local in the literal sense — farms and producers from inside the county, selling whatever is genuinely in season rather than a standardized inventory trucked in from three states away. That specificity is the entire difference between a certified market and a produce aisle with nicer lighting. And it stays small enough that you learn the faces over a season. The honey vendor. The bread baker. The flower grower who arrives with whatever happened to be blooming that week. Eventually you stop going for groceries and start going because it is Saturday and the market is open, which is reason enough. Take somebody with you and make it a standing thing.

Hallowe'en Spooktacular
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 Bob Baker Marionette Theater, 1345…

There is a particular panic to finding something for a five-year-old in October that is actually Halloween and not a trauma. Everything is either a hayride with a cartoon pumpkin or a maze with a man holding a chainsaw. The middle does not seem to exist. It does, on a stretch of 1st Street, and it has existed since 1963. Bob Baker's marionettes are hand-built, string-operated, and operated in the open — the puppeteers walk the floor with them, so the whole thing happens at eye level with the audience sitting on carpet rather than in rows. More than a hundred puppets come out across the show: dancing skeletons, a pumpkin patch, a sea of ghosts. It is spooky the way a children's book is spooky, which is to say genuinely, and without anybody jumping out at you. The detail that converts adults: every show ends with ice cream, and the costume parade is for everyone in the room, not just the kids. Plenty of the audience on a given afternoon has no child with them at all. Runs through November 8. 1345 West 1st Street, Los Angeles. Tickets move quickly once October starts, and the people who know this place book the whole month in one go.

Pasadena Latino Heritage Parade & Festival 2026 — City Hall
In 2 days · Oct 10 Pasadena City Hall, 100 N Garfield…

Somebody in your family knows the words to a song you only know the tune of. You have been meaning to ask. You keep not asking, and the number of people who could answer keeps getting smaller. For its twenty-eighth year, Pasadena hands over Los Robles Avenue and the lawn in front of City Hall for an afternoon. The parade steps off at four with local schools, community groups, neighbours and elected officials, and it is unmistakably a hometown parade rather than a produced spectacle — the marching band is from the high school down the street, and half the crowd is waving at somebody they know in it. The festival opens at five in front of City Hall, which is the part worth staying for. Pasadena's City Hall is a domed Mediterranean building with an open courtyard, and when the sun goes and the music starts it becomes one of the more beautiful places in the county to stand with a plate of food you did not have to queue long for. Saturday, October 10, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parade begins at Los Robles Avenue and Buckeye Street; festival at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N Garfield Ave. Free, all ages.

San Diego Gulls Home Opener vs Henderson Silver Knights
In 2 days · Oct 10 $20+ Pechanga Arena San Diego, 3500 Spo…

Minor-league hockey is one of the great underrated nights out in America, and San Diego keeps it a secret it shouldn't: fast, violent, gorgeous, and cheap, played close enough that you can hear the boards rattle and the skates carve the ice. Opening night at Pechanga is the best of it — a building full of a fanbase that has waited all summer, the lights down, the anthem, and then the drop of the puck and ninety minutes of end-to-end chaos punctuated by the occasional gloves-off dust-up that brings the whole arena to its feet. The Gulls open the 2026-27 season against the Henderson Silver Knights, and there is no better way to fall for hockey than a live AHL game where the future NHL stars are still hungry. Saturday, October 10, 2026, 6pm, Pechanga Arena San Diego. Bring the kids, bring a first-timer who thinks they don't like hockey, and watch them convert somewhere around the first breakaway.

Grass under a blanket, somebody's dog wandering the row, and a kid down front narrating the plot to nobody in particular. Half the neighborhood is out here and not one of them paid anything to be. Somebody decided that every part of this city deserved at least one summer evening of a movie outdoors under an actual sky, and then went and did it, park by park, year after year. The format is the whole idea: find the screening closest to you, bring something to sit on, arrive before dark. No seats to reserve, no venue with opinions about your shoes. Just a park turning into a theater for a few hours because people wanted somewhere good to be. The lineup runs wide enough that something is always worth the trip — a recent release, an old one, something the kids have not seen. Rotating locations from July into October, free. Find the one nearest you and tell your neighbors. That is genuinely all it takes.

Death From Above 1979 - Private Lives Tour
In 2 days · Oct 10 $54+ The Observatory North Park, 2891 U…

Two guys, a bass, and a drum kit, producing more sonic violence than most bands manage with six people — that has always been the miracle and the joke of this band at the same time. It is dance music for people who want to break something. Punk swagger welded to a groove you cannot physically stand still through, and played live it stops being a genre and becomes an event happening to your body. Expect a pit. Expect the low end parked in your chest for the whole set. Expect to sound like a different person in the morning. The Observatory in North Park is built for exactly this: a room made for sweaty, ears-ringing communion, all ages, doors at 7 and music at 8. This is the show you go to when you need to shake something loose. Afterward you stand outside with strangers who feel exactly as alive as you do, and nobody wants to be the first to leave.

The Living Tombstone — SOMA, San Diego

If you know The Living Tombstone from the internet — and statistically, you do, because Yoav Landau's tracks have been streamed a billion times across YouTube and Spotify without most people knowing his name — then you already know the sound. Electronic, rock, and chiptune fused into something that lives in the space between video game soundtracks and proper dance music, made by someone who built a career writing songs about Five Nights at Freddy's and then kept leveling up until the music outgrew the meme. The SOMA show brings Landau's project to a venue that fits the vibe — standing room, all ages, the kind of crowd that discovered this music through gaming communities and fan-made animations and now gets to hear it through speakers that weigh more than they do. The live show translates the production in a way the bedroom headphone experience can't — bass you feel, drops timed to lighting rigs, the communal energy of a room full of people who found the same strange corner of the internet. Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 8:00 PM. SOMA, 3350 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110. All ages. General admission.

Mile twenty is where the crowd noise falls away and it is just you and a question you have been asking since before sunrise — the one only your own legs can answer. This is one of the kinder places in California to go looking for that answer. Flat, fast, certified for Boston, running past the Queen Mary, along the shoreline, out through Belmont Shore, with the ocean air doing its best to carry you home. The field is the full spectrum: first-timers chasing a finish, veterans chasing a number, and a companion race that sends kids and families running past the sharks inside the Aquarium of the Pacific. The gun goes before dawn from Marina Green in downtown Long Beach, in October. Whatever distance you pick, the medal is not really the point. You learn something about yourself out there that does not come up any other way.

On one morning a week a street in the valley closes to cars and becomes something the other six days have no version of. Growers who actually grew it. Cheese makers who can tell you the name of the animal. A prepared-food row that quietly outcompetes the restaurants twenty steps away. It has been running on this block for over twenty years, long enough to have a rhythm the regulars follow without ever discussing it: come early for the selection, get out before the parking turns against you. The vendors know their people, and their people know which stall to hit first depending on the season. Because it sits within walking distance of the studios, the crowd sometimes includes faces you recognize and do not approach. They are buying peaches. That is the whole story. Bring somebody you want an unhurried hour with. This is exactly what an unhurried hour looks like.

The decision you did not know you had to make is waiting in the prepared-food stretch at the far end, and by then you are already carrying flowers, a wedge of something, and stone fruit you have no plan for. Sunday morning here is a series of small commitments. More than a hundred and seventy-five vendors means it is really several markets at once: produce near the entrance, flowers in the middle, the cheese and jam people toward the back, and the coffee stand at the east entrance whose regulars have stood in the same spot since the thing opened. Rain or shine, holidays included, for over three decades. That consistency is the design — it shows up every week because the neighborhood does. Normal Street between University and Lincoln, Sunday mornings into early afternoon. EBT accepted, dogs welcome. Go with the friend who has been meaning to cook more. They will come home with no excuse left.

Certified farmers only here, which means the person handing you the bag grew what is in it: the heirloom tomatoes in August did not come out of a warehouse, the honey vendor can tell you what is blooming this week, and the flower growers know the season by what is standing in their buckets. The market stays small on purpose. Parking is imperfect and the regulars solve it by walking a couple of blocks, because they have been doing this long enough to know where to leave the car. What you actually come for is the conversation — the variety, the growing conditions, why this particular week's citrus is worth the trip. Go early, and go hungry.

First-year festivals have a quality nothing else does. Nobody is jaded yet, everyone is trying slightly too hard, and it shows in the best possible way. The street closes through North City, the walkable village that grew up beside the university, and fills with local makers, food trucks, live music, and craft beer from the breweries that turned this stretch of the 78 into a destination. Families drift down the middle of a road they normally drive. The October light handles the rest. It is a hometown afternoon in a suburb still deciding what kind of place it wants to be. Day of the Dog — San Diego
In 3 days · Oct 11 Voltaire Street, Ocean Beach, San …

Voltaire Street shuts down to cars and opens up to something better — a four-block pedestrian stretch in Ocean Beach where the dogs outnumber the humans and nobody minds. Day of the Dog is the kind of event that could only exist in a neighborhood where the sidewalk regulars already know each other's dogs by name. From Cable to Bacon, the street fills with French bulldog races (serious to the owners, hilarious to everyone else), Corgi sprints, wiener dog dashes, a Dogue Fashion Show that should be absurd but somehow isn't, and a Best In Show showcase where the treat prizes matter more than anyone will admit. There's a 100-foot art installation down the middle of the block, a foam party zone where the dogs lose their minds, and dog blessings for the ones who need a little extra grace. The humans get food trucks, local vendors, and the particular pleasure of watching a neighborhood that already loves its dogs spend an afternoon proving it. No pretense that this is anything other than what it is: a community that built a festival around the thing it was already doing every morning on every corner. October 11, noon–4 PM. The pier smells different in October. Not the usual funnel-cake-and-sunscreen haze — this time it is butter and char and something briny you cannot quite place. Off the Hook turns the Santa Monica Pier into a seafood crawl where LA's best chefs compete to prove they can do more with a fish than anyone thought possible, and Heal the Bay gets the proceeds, so the ocean that supplied tonight's dinner gets something back. This is the eighth year. The format has not changed because the format works: all-inclusive ticket, unlimited tastings from every booth, live music from The Windbreakers, and a sunset over the Pacific that nobody plans but everybody photographs. VIP gets you in an hour early at three, which matters because the lobster sliders have never survived until general admission. The Route 66 Centennial is this year's theme, layering Americana nostalgia over the seafood spread in a way that somehow makes sense when you are standing on the end of the continent where the highway dies. October 11, 2026. 4 PM to 7:30 PM. 21 and over. Santa Monica Pier.

Dinosaur Jr. invented a lot of that: the template for every band that ever buried a broken heart under a guitar solo, forty years deep and still playing at a volume that rearranges your organs. In the close quarters of the Belly Up, that famous three-amp roar becomes a physical fact, and the crowd — lifers in faded shirts, kids discovering it new — just leans into the wave together. The good card shops are never on a nice street. They sit in a strip off a six-lane road, between a smoke shop and a place that does taxes, and the inside smells of cardboard and floor polish. This is one of those, and the regulars are the reason to go. South Street pulls a genuinely mixed table — longshoremen off a shift, nursing students, a couple of dads who bring their kids along and then get competitive with each other. Monday is the night the shop belongs to Commander rather than to tournaments, so games sprawl, and somebody always has a deck built entirely around a joke they will explain whether or not you asked. Free to play, which matters more than it sounds: when nobody is protecting an entry fee, people will cheerfully lend you a preconstructed deck and walk you through it. 2150 E South St, Mondays at half six.

Every autumn the light goes long and gold in the late afternoon and something in you starts looking for a wood to get lost in. Ten episodes aired in 2014. That was the whole thing. And somehow a generation now marks the turn of the season by rewatching them, in order, with the good candle lit. The band on this stage is the reason. They wrote the score — the frog songs, the tavern rounds, the glass-harmonica dread underneath the pretty parts — and they play it live with the same battered instrument cases and close harmony that made a children's cartoon feel like a folk record somebody found in an attic. Expect the room to sing back without being asked. Expect people in cloaks who did not coordinate and are delighted anyway. The crowd here skews people who found the show alone, at night, and assumed nobody else knew. They were wrong, and that discovery is most of the joy of the evening. Music at 8:00 PM at the Lodge Room in Highland Park. There is a second night after this one, and it sells out the same way.

Salt still in your hair, no particular hurry, mid-afternoon — that is the window this market was built inside. Tuesdays are when the tourist traffic thins and the neighborhood quietly takes the day back for itself, and Bayard Street becomes the weekly anchor nobody bothers to advertise. The hours are the design: it opens as the day loosens rather than at dawn. Produce from inland farms, fresh fish, local honey, prepared food from people who cook a few blocks away, and the specialty things you stop buying at a grocery store once you have found a better source. What shows up shifts with the season, which is what keeps pulling you back. The real point was never any single vendor. It is the rhythm it puts in a week — the day you run into somebody from the neighborhood and stay far longer than you meant to. Bring the friend who keeps saying they should eat better.

Low afternoon light comes across the water at exactly the hour you happen to be free, catching the bay behind the vendor tables — and that light is the reason people linger here instead of buying their tomatoes and leaving. The market sets up at First and B on the island every week: certified organic produce, local honey, cut flowers, prepared food from people who hand you a sample before you think to ask. Some of these vendors have been showing up on the same afternoon for years, long enough that the regulars greet them by name and know which stall to hit before it sells out. That is what turns a weekly errand into the thing that makes one day on the island unlike all the others. The second night of a two-night run tends to be the looser one, and for a show built around a ten-episode cartoon that people watch every autumn like a liturgy, looser is an improvement. This is the band that actually wrote the score — the tavern songs, the frog numbers, the parts that made a children's program sound like a lost folk record. Playing it live, in costume, to a room that knows every word, produces something closer to a singalong than a concert. The people who come to the second night are frequently the ones who came to the first and could not leave it at that. Highland Park's old Masonic hall is upstairs, wood-floored, with a balcony. Citrus, strawberries, stone fruit when it is in, honey from apiaries close enough to still count as neighbors. What makes it particular is the hour. It runs in the afternoon, which gives it a weekday rhythm instead of a weekend event feeling, people stopping on the way home, vendors talking at length because neither party is in a hurry, and the same few conversations picking up where they left off. NYC Wine & Food Festival 2026 — New York, NY
In 6 days · Oct 14 – Oct 17 20 Hudson Yards, New York, NY 10001

Picture the chefs you have been watching on television standing two feet away, actively cooking, actually talking to you - and now picture hundreds of them in tents along the Hudson River, in October, in the most food-serious city in the country. Four days of the best culinary talent in America, James Beard Award winners among them. The festival spans dozens of individual events across the city, from Grand Tastings at Hudson Yards to intimate chef dinners and late-night after-parties. The Grand Tastings are the anchor: enormous walkthrough experiences where you sample dishes from hundreds of chefs alongside wines, spirits, and cocktails curated from producers across the world. The programming is organized around themes - ocean-to-table, global flavors, pastry and dessert, fire and smoke - so there is a clear entry point depending on what kind of food person you are. This one is for people whose food obsession is an identity, not a hobby: industry professionals, serious food media, and deeply passionate civilian food lovers occupying the same space. If you follow food the way others follow sports - tracking restaurants, reading cookbooks, knowing what won the James Beard this year - this is built for your specific kind of enthusiasm. General admission tickets are available; VIP tiers offer more intimate experiences. Tickets sell out, particularly for the Saturday and Sunday Grand Tastings, so buy early - the best sessions are gone before October. Individual event pricing varies; budget for both the events and the inevitable great meal you will want afterward. The festival benefits two nonprofits, God's Love We Deliver and No Kid Hungry, so the spend carries an added dimension. Wear comfortable shoes: Grand Tastings are standing events and you will walk miles across the tasting floor. This is where the American food conversation happens in person, once a year - the restaurants, the chefs, the trends - and where that knowledge becomes communal. New York in October, food as identity, the entire industry in one place. The NYC Wine & Food Festival takes place in New York, NY.

The book your kid makes you read for the fourteenth time is never the one you would have picked. It is almost always the one where the pictures are doing something the words refuse to confirm - a hat that is obviously stolen, an animal looking just slightly off to the left. Klassen built a Caldecott career on exactly that withheld joke, and tonight he and Hannigan talk about the actual craft of it: how you design a page for a person who cannot read, how much you can imply with an eyeline, why the funniest thing in a picture book is usually the thing nobody says out loud. This is the rare event that is genuinely for two audiences at once - the illustration and design people who study his negative space, and the parents who have the whole text memorised against their will. Skylight keeps a children's annexe next door, and the staff there will tell you which of his books survives the fortieth reading, which is a different and more useful list than the award list. Free, RSVP, seven o'clock, a Wednesday. Come whether or not you brought the kid.

Shiner, Fotocrime, Nonexistent Night
In 7 days · Oct 15 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Too heavy for the radio and too melodic for the hardcore kids was a real commercial dead end, and the bands stuck in it spent the nineties being adored by about eleven thousand people who all still bring it up unprompted at parties. The headliner came out of Kansas City and made that particular trade-off sound deliberate: enormous low end, patient song structures, vocals that stay calm while everything underneath them gets heavier. Then look at who is opening. Fotocrime plays cold, drum-machine-driven post-punk that on paper shares nothing with the band above it, and in sequence makes complete sense — the same appetite for weight and repetition, routed through a different decade and a much colder set of tools. That is the actual reason to go. Bills this well-sequenced are rare, and the odds are good you arrive for one act and order the other one's record from the parking lot afterward. Doors seven-thirty, first act eight-thirty, a Thursday. October 15, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever you argue about record production with. The line between heavy nineties rock and the darkwave rooms across town is far thinner here than either crowd will admit.

Somewhere along the way, most of what we own stopped being made by hands we could shake. That is the quiet pull of a room full of makers: hundreds of them, under one roof at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, standing beside the glasswork and hand-turned wood and fine jewelry and photography they spent a year producing. You can talk to the person who threw the ceramic bowl. You can watch a woodworker explain the grain. For three days in October the fairgrounds fill with the smell of kettle corn and the low hum of a few hundred conversations between strangers who make things and strangers who want to hold them. There is a kids' zone, live entertainment, gourmet food, and holiday decor that will not exist in any big-box store. Bring cash, bring the children, bring the intention to leave with one thing you will keep for decades. October 16 through 18, 2026, Del Mar Fairgrounds. The 52nd year of a show that refuses to let handmade die.

Animation Is Film Festival 2026 - TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, Hollywood
In 8 days · Oct 16 TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, 6801 Holly…

Everybody tells you animation is for children right up until the year you work out that most of the films that genuinely wrecked you were drawn. This is the festival built for whoever that happened to. Its ninth edition puts Oscar contenders on the same four-day program as a twenty-six-year-old cult picture nobody's studio wanted, which is the entire argument it exists to make. On the awards side: Louis Clichy's Iron Boy, Leah Nelson's Tangles, The Violinist, and the first theatrical showing anywhere of the opening two episodes of Dana Terrace's Knights of Guinevere. But the reason to clear a Friday is further down the grid — the North American premiere of Shingo Natsume's Ghost: End of Night, and a retrospective print of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the 2000 film that underperformed and then quietly became the thing a whole generation pointed at to end the argument about whether animation was a medium or a genre. Opening day starts with Best of Annecy at four in the afternoon, which means the festival's first act is a room full of people watching shorts that will never get a US release. October 16 to 19, at TCL 6 on Hollywood Blvd. Passes and single tickets through the festival.

DroneArt Show: Harry Potter™ — Del Mar Fairgrounds
In 8 days · Oct 16 Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Du…

You remember the first time the Great Hall ceiling opened up and the candles floated. Not the plot. Not the dialogue. The ceiling. Some images lodge somewhere logic cannot reach and simply stay there for decades, quiet, until something cracks them open again. Twelve hundred drones rise off the fairgrounds and draw that ceiling across the real sky. Not a screen. Not a projection. The actual night, rewritten in light, while a live violinist threads the original score underneath formations that shift from the Sorting Hat to the Whomping Willow to a Patronus wider than the field you are standing on. The band on your wrist pulses in time with all of it, so you are not really watching the show. You are inside it. Two nights only, in October, outdoors. Parents who read the books aloud fifteen years ago will stand beside those kids, now grown, and neither one will say a word for a full minute.

Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter at SOMA — San Diego
In 8 days · Oct 16 SOMA San Diego, 3350 Sports Arena …

Steve Jones is standing ten feet away from you playing the riff that started everything. The Sex Pistols — original members Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock — return with Frank Carter on vocals for a North American tour that stops at SOMA on October 16. Carter, the ferocious frontman of Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes and ex-Gallows, brings the dangerous energy that this music was built on. Support from LA's Militarie Gun, whose post-hardcore sets have been tearing through SoCal basements for years. This is not nostalgia. This is the band that detonated the blueprint for every punk show that followed, playing a room small enough that you can see the sweat. SOMA's concrete floor and low ceiling were built for exactly this volume. The people in this room are not here because they read about punk in a textbook. They are here because the first time they heard 'Anarchy in the U.K.' something clicked and never unclicked. Doors 7 PM. Show 8 PM. Tickets from $114 via Ticketmaster. All ages.

Taste of Soul LA 2026
In 9 days · Oct 17 Free Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

Handmade pasta, cannoli, imported cheeses, and a chalk-art mural taking shape on the pavement under someone's knees - this is one weekend a year when India Street stops being a dining district and becomes a whole Italian-American neighborhood turned inside out. San Diego's largest annual street festival draws over 100,000 people across the weekend. The Little Italy Association organizes it, filling India Street and the surrounding blocks with cooking demonstrations, bocce ball tournaments, live Italian folk music, traditional dance, and an extraordinary spread of food. The Gesso Italiano brings local artists creating chalk-art murals on the streets; the cooking competition and wine garden are the peak-hour draws, and neighborhood restaurants run festival specials throughout. Little Italy is one of the city's most walkable districts - bounded by the waterfront, lined with bistros and gelato shops. Free to attend. Parking is limited - the Little Italy trolley stop on the Green Line is the easy way in. Mid-October along India Street and Fir Street, San Diego.

University Heights Fall Festival 2026 — San Diego
In 9 days · Oct 17 4404 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92116

Behind an elementary school sits a field that spends most of the year being nothing but a field, and then for one Saturday every October it becomes the reason people move to a neighborhood in the first place. Live music, food trucks, craft beer, a pumpkin patch you actually pick from and carry home. But the word doing the work here is neighborhood. The person running the tamale truck has a kid at the school. The face painter lives three blocks over. The hayride circles ground you have walked past a hundred times without ever once imagining what it could turn into. Every dollar goes to the 530 students at Alice Birney, a Title I school where at least 40% of the kids come from low-income families, which means the beer in your hand is quietly doing something on the way down. Entry is free. The lawn games are the kind adults pretend they are playing for the children. Take the bus, and take a neighbor you have somehow never actually talked to.

D6 Fall Festival
In 9 days · Oct 17 Verne Goodwin Mira Mesa Senior Cen…

Some neighborhoods have to build their own gathering place because the map never bothered to hand them one. Mira Mesa and the Convoy corridor did exactly that, and this is the autumn version of it. Same team as the night market, so the food-truck rows and vendor booths are what most people come for, and then it wraps all of that in everything a fall evening should have: a movie in the park, a trunk-or-treat, pumpkin decorating, live performances, and the particular warmth of an immigrant community that turns out in force for its own. It runs into the evening and it is free. You will watch three generations of one family split a single plate and stay until the movie ends, because nobody wants to be the one who suggests leaving. The senior center on Mira Mesa Boulevard, an October evening, no admission. If you grew up out here, you already know exactly who to send this to.

San Diego Night Market — Fall Edition
In 9 days · Oct 17 Free entry Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Hwy,…

October air at the waterfront is the thing people mean when they say San Diego has great weather - warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to walk without sweating, the bay throwing back the city lights by the time you've been there an hour. The San Diego Night Market's Fall Edition comes back with that cooler air and the vendor rows and the street food and the setting that makes it worth scheduling your month around. The fall market runs differently than the summer version; autumn evenings at Waterfront Park have a specific quality the July nights don't. The night works on foot traffic and conversation: you don't need a plan to have a good time here, just a direction to walk and a sense of what you feel like eating. Bring cash if you have it - not every vendor takes cards. Arrive before 7 to find a spot at the waterfront tables. Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Hwy, San Diego. October 17th. Free entry. Walk one block inland afterward and the rest of downtown is still open, which is how a two-hour plan quietly becomes the whole evening.

You will hear the hit before you finish processing it, because there is nothing between your seat and the glass except the glass. That part does not translate on television, and it is why people who try minor-league hockey once tend to come back. Henderson is Vegas's development club and Ontario is the Kings', and what that means on the ice is two rosters of young players auditioning in real time for a phone call that changes their lives. Nobody is coasting through a long season. The Reign play the fast, skilled style the parent club insists on, and the Silver Knights arrive with the same instructions. A Saturday in October at Toyota Arena, at a price that requires no conversation with anyone about the budget. Get the kids a souvenir between periods and pick a rookie to follow. Spirited Away 25th Anniversary — Studio Ghibli Fest 2026
In 9 days · Oct 17 – Oct 21 Varies by theater Fathom Events Theaters Nationwide …

You have been homesick for twenty-five years for a place that was never real. A bathhouse lit gold over black water. A train that only runs one way, across a flooded world, into the dark. Spirited Away gave you that homesickness the first time you saw it — and this October, for one week only, its 25th anniversary and the finale of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece comes back to the big screen where the ache belongs. There is a particular silence that falls over a theater full of people who love the same film. The lights drop, Joe Hisaishi's first piano notes land, and a room of strangers stops breathing at the same moment. Ghibli Fest runs both the subtitled original and the English dub, with a piece of surprise content before each show. But the real event is the crowd — parents who were kids when this came out, now holding the hands of kids seeing it for the first time; longtime fans catching a detail they'd missed on every laptop rewatch; someone two rows back crying quietly and not caring who sees. Even if you've seen it a dozen times, you have not seen it like this. If Spirited Away is a film you carry around inside you, this isn't a question — you go. Projected, at scale, with sound that fills the room, is the version it was made for. It's rated PG and open to almost everyone, though No-Face and the spirit world can frighten very small children — parents of under-sevens should know that going in. This is not a movie to leave on in the background. It's two hours built to move you, in a room full of people who came to be moved alongside you. Tickets run through the official Ghibli Fest and participating theater box offices, and the anniversary finale sells out earliest of the whole festival — buy ahead. Choose your format on purpose: the dub is the gentle way in for young kids, the subtitled original is what the purists want. Come early for the pre-show content most latecomers miss. Go on a weekend evening if you can, when the theater fills all the way up and the silence gets deeper. Some films you own and still leave the house for. At twenty-five, Spirited Away is less a movie than a place people keep returning to — and going back together, in the dark, is how you remember why it marked you. One week in October. Then the train pulls away again.

Strangelove - The Depeche Mode Experience
In 9 days · Oct 17 – Oct 18 Ventura Music Hall, 1888 E Thompso…

Tribute acts get dismissed until you stand in a room where four hundred people are singing a synth line together, and then the argument gets much harder to make. Depeche Mode occupies an unusual place in Southern California specifically — it is the band that a generation of Latino kids in the Inland Empire and East LA claimed as their own, so completely that the devotion here has no real parallel anywhere else in the country. That crowd is who fills these nights. The band doing the playing takes the material seriously enough to get the gear right rather than just the haircuts. Expect black clothing, expect people who came with the same friends they went to the original shows with. Music at 9:00 PM in Ventura on East Thompson Boulevard. This particular devotion is a whole regional subculture, and the shows are where it becomes visible to itself.

Escondido Grand Avenue Festival — October 2026
In 10 days · Oct 18 Grand Avenue, 200 E Grand Ave, Esc…

Six lanes of asphalt run straight through downtown, and twice a year the city simply takes them back. They close the road, line both sides with tents and stages and food stalls, and for one day Grand Avenue belongs to the people who actually live around it. More than a hundred vendors sell handcrafted goods, imports, and food from a dozen directions, professional live music fills several stages, and a beer and wine garden anchors the middle of the whole thing. This is not a farmers market with ambitions. It has been running for over thirty years. Escondido surprises people who never bothered to come: the arts center is here, the breweries cluster along the main drag, Cruisin Grand fills the street on summer Fridays. But you have not seen what this city looks like when it decides to show up until you have walked Grand on festival day, when the tamale vendor is set up beside a jeweler from Carlsbad and the Fleetwood Mac cover band turns out to be genuinely good. Bring the friend who insists nothing ever happens in North County.

Walk MS: San Diego 2026
In 10 days · Oct 18 San Diego, CA

Every step is the same distance. Nobody measures yours against anyone else's. The finish line is wherever you stop. Walk MS San Diego is the National MS Society's annual fundraising walk — a morning where thousands gather to walk together in support of people living with multiple sclerosis. The route winds through one of San Diego's parks, and the crowd is made up of people who know someone, people who are someone, and people who showed up because walking together is a thing that matters even when you can't explain exactly why. Participants who raise $100 or more receive a Walk MS T-shirt on site, but the real draw is the community that forms around the walk: teams with matching shirts, families pushing strollers, groups who've done this every year since diagnosis. The fundraising fuels research, advocacy, and support programs, but the walk itself is the thing — the simple act of showing up and moving forward. Registration and details at nationalmssociety.org. San Diego, CA. Fall 2026.
