Jacob K. Javits Convention Center,…
The Javits Center in October, a hundred thousand people in four days, every niche of pop culture in one building — and the streets of Hell's Kitchen turning into something you've never seen on a regular Tuesday. The Javits Center fills with a programmatic density that rewards strategic planning. Main stage panels feature talent from the year's biggest genre properties. The show floor covers hundreds of thousands of square feet of publishers, studios, collectibles vendors, and artist booths. Artist Alley at NYCC skews heavily toward comics — the original fanbase — alongside anime, gaming, and TV, giving it a different character than conventions that have shifted more entirely toward film and streaming. The autograph and photo op schedule is extensive; tickets for specific sessions go on sale in advance and sell out. New York Comic Con in 2026 is celebrating twenty years, and the Coney Island theme suggests organizers are going big on identity and atmosphere. The anniversary edition will likely bring programming and exclusives designed for the occasion. If you have been considering NYCC as a destination event, this is the year to go. The East Coast advantage: NYCC is adjacent to one of the world's great cities. The convention ends at 7pm and New York starts. Restaurants, bars, and attractions are all accessible from the Javits Center. Hotel inventory near the venue is limited; book early and consider Hudson Yards or Hell's Kitchen options within walking distance. Tickets go on sale in June with a Superfan Presale for Popverse members opening before general on-sale. Javits Center, New York City. October 8–11, 2026. New York Comic Con was founded in 2006 and reached 250,000 attendance within its first decade. The 20th anniversary edition in 2026 with the Coney Island theme signals that the organizers are treating this as a milestone year — expect expanded programming, anniversary exclusives, and a level of production that reflects two decades of iteration. If you have been waiting for the right year to make NYCC a destination trip, the 20th anniversary is the obvious choice.

Big Bear Lake Convention Center, 4…
Up at 6,750 feet the beer comes with a mountain view and absolutely no chill whatsoever. Big Bear's Oktoberfest has been running for over fifty years, which means the whole thing operates like a well-oiled Bavarian machine: the log-sawing contests, the stein-holding endurance battles, oompah bands flown in from actual Germany, and a hall full of flatlanders discovering that yes, they will in fact do the chicken dance in front of three hundred strangers. It runs weekend after weekend all through the fall, so it becomes the excuse to finally make the mountain trip you keep putting off, alpine air and a giant soft pretzel and a designated driver who is being a very good sport about all of this. The lake sits right there for a cold, gold-lit walk between rounds when the beer hall finally gets too warm and loud. Bring a group and lederhosen you're not afraid to fully commit to. It fills the Convention Center in Big Bear Lake across nine weekends of autumn.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
Somewhere between the pumpkin you carved as a kid and actual sculpture sits this thing, and it lands much closer to sculpture than you are ready for.
More than five thousand hand-carved, illuminated pumpkins line a timed walking path — not triangle faces but full portraits, scenes and figures glowing in the dark, set to an ambient score. Nothing jumps out at you. No roaming monsters. It is Halloween for people who love the craft and the glow more than the fear: couples on a date, families with small kids, anyone who wants October to feel like wonder instead of adrenaline.
Entry runs in fifteen-minute intervals so the path never bunches up.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. October 13.
It is gone in four nights, and it is the rare seasonal thing that is genuinely worth the drive.

You have an obsession you have learned not to bring up at parties. Somewhere around the second sentence people's eyes start scanning the room for an exit, and you have gotten very good at cutting yourself off early. Everyone in this bar has that same reflex, and once a month they all agree to switch it off together.
Three speakers get twenty minutes each. Science, pop culture, history, or whatever has been quietly eating the presenter's brain since the last one. Think of a TED talk, except it happens over drinks, the speaker is nervous in a way that makes you root for them, and the questions from the audience are genuinely better than anything you would hear at a conference — because the people asking came out on a weeknight specifically to hear about something they did not know existed.
Bring the friend who apologizes for talking too much about the thing they love. Watch them stop apologizing.

Handlery Hotel, 950 Hotel Circle N…
Somewhere in your memory, a blue box is still spinning. You heard the sound once — that impossible grinding wheeze — and something in your chest shifted. You never fully came back from it.
SD Who Con returns to San Diego for a weekend built by the people who understand what that sound means. This is not a corporate franchise activation. It is a volunteer-run gathering at the Handlery Hotel, October 16–18, where the hallways fill with cosplayers who sewed their own scarves, collectors who can date a Dalek by its bumps, and first-timers who just discovered that their obsession has a name and a room.
Panels, vendors, an Artist and Author Alley, and guest appearances fill the programming. But the real draw is the recognition — sitting in a room where nobody needs the reference explained. Where someone can say 'reverse the polarity' and fifty people laugh without thinking.
If you've ever paused a conversation to explain regeneration to someone who didn't ask, your people are already here. The San Diego Doctor Who crowd meets in far smaller rooms the rest of the year, which is where most of these costumes get their test run.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Die…
A horror panel tucked inside somebody else's general convention always feels like being let in through a side door. This is the other thing entirely — a whole weekend built by people who wanted to be in a horror room and stopped waiting for permission to have one.
You can tell from the guest list. The names here come from the films themselves, not from adjacent franchises with a horror-shaped marketing angle, and that single detail tells you exactly who the weekend is for. The floor runs both days: vendors, artists, and an artist alley carrying original work, prop replicas, and merch that never surfaces at the mainstream shows. The people filling it pre-order the special editions, know the director's full filmography, and hold real opinions about the best practical effect of the last decade.
Two days in October, in a Mission Valley hotel with real function rooms, in the one month the whole city is finally in the right season for it.
If you take horror seriously, you already know who you are texting about this.

If you live out past the pass, every convention you have ever loved cost you a long drive each way and a hotel room you could not really justify. You went anyway. You have been going anyway for years.
This is the one that came to you instead. Two days of tabletop, console, and video games with the infrastructure to take all three seriously — real tournament setups instead of a folding table in a corner, a dealer's room running from retro consoles to current card games, and panels about how games actually get made. The energy is specific to a convention that belongs to the people who built it rather than one that toured through and left.
Mid-October in the desert is the good window: warm without punishing, cool once the sun drops, and reachable from anywhere in the Valley.
Send it to the friend who has been driving you over the pass for a decade. Tell them it is their turn to ride.

DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valle…
You did not get the prom you wanted the first time around. Almost nobody did, which is practically the defining feature of the event. So a horror convention in Mission Valley hands the night back with the lighting corrected: a proper dance, six to ten in the evening, set inside a weekend already full of practical effects artists and monster makeup and people who can talk for an hour about one creature suit. Dressing as the thing that frightened you at nine years old is not a costume in this ballroom, it is a dialect, and everyone present speaks it fluently. The crossover is what makes it work. Horror crowds and dark-alternative crowds rarely share a floor, and when they do the room takes on an unusual generosity, because nobody is the strangest person there and so nobody has to defend anything. Four hours. Comfortable shoes under the gown. The slow song still gets everybody.

The artist alley is the part you actually remember. Not the panels, not the autograph line - the folding table where someone your age was selling a print of a character you thought only you cared about, and you stood there too long, and they said the show's name back to you like a password. Conventions have gotten expensive enough that a lot of people have quietly stopped going. This is that same feeling without the badge: an outdoor artist alley and vendor market in Little Tokyo, free to walk into, with performances and cosplay and a swap-meet corner where people clear out the figures and doujinshi they have outgrown. Free attendance changes who shows up - you get the teenagers and the people who have been in this since the VHS-fansub era standing at the same table. One real detail: vendor spaces run seventy-five dollars, first come, which is why the mix of sellers is different every year instead of the same corporate booths. Sunday, October 18, noon to eight, 244 San Pedro St, Los Angeles.

Theatrical rock made by people who are obviously having a wonderful time is deeply unfashionable and completely undefeatable in a live room. This Arizona band writes songs with narrative arcs, key changes that should not work, and a horn part when a horn part is funny — the sort of thing that finds its audience through video games, animation communities, and the general internet rather than through radio. Their crowd is young, extremely online, and knows the words to material that never charted anywhere. Expect the room to handle whole sections unprompted. Sunday evening in an upstairs Masonic hall in Highland Park, wood floors, no seats. Music at 7:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56. Fandoms built in Discord servers and comment sections are the ones most likely to turn a normal concert into something closer to a convention, and that is the atmosphere here.

The Mayan, 1038 S Hill St, Los Ang…
Once a year the luchadores put Halloween masks on over their regular masks, and that one act of stacking costume on costume tells you everything about the night you have walked into.
This is the maximalist end of the calendar. The wrestlers go themed. The burlesque performers pull out their biggest numbers. Eduardo Leal presides over the chaos from the mic. And the crowd, which treats the holiday as a competition, turns up in full Day of the Dead makeup, in superhero suits, in luchador masks bought that afternoon specifically for this. A thousand people in an art deco theater at capacity, watching Mexican wrestling tradition collide with LA counterculture. It is either the strangest evening of your year or the best one.
The Mayan on South Hill Street downtown, 21 and over. It sells out weeks ahead, so the email list is how people actually get in.
Go with the person in your life who commits far too hard to a costume. They have been waiting for this room their whole life.

Mexican synth-pop is one of the great under-documented scenes of the last thirty years, and Moenia are the reason a whole cohort of people in this city associate analog pads and reverb with their own adolescence rather than with Berlin. Pair them with Maria Jose, who came out of a pop group and rebuilt herself into the person Mexican audiences go to for the big emotional ones, and you get a bill that is half dance floor and half karaoke. The crossover is the interesting part: the Moenia crowd and the synth-and-city-pop crowd in Los Angeles are closer than either group realises, and a night like this is where they discover it. A Thursday is the right night for this - it is a going-out record rather than a sit-down one. Moenia have been at this since the early nineties and still perform with hardware rather than laptops, which is audible in how loose the sequencing gets. Performance at eight on the 29th of October.

Hyatt Regency Orlando, 9801 Intern…
There is a particular relief in walking into a room where you don't have to explain why you've seen the same slasher twenty times — everyone here has too. Since 2003, that room has been in Orlando every October, and people fly in from all fifty states for it: not an entry point into horror, a homecoming for the people who already know exactly what they love.
The spine of the weekend is access that exists nowhere else in the genre — the actual faces from Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and The Walking Dead, sitting a table away. Around them fills a whole floor of horror makeup artists, independent filmmakers, prop-replica craftspeople, and authors, plus the best costume work you'll see anywhere; this is craft, not Halloween dress-up, and the crowd is somehow both the most enthusiastic and the most considerate in fandom. The October edition is the flagship — bigger roster, more programming than the May one — which is why the photo ops and autograph sessions sell out within days of a guest announcement. Build your must-see list before registration opens.
Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, October 2026. Orlando's still warm then, so dress light, and plan your schedule before you arrive — improvising a Spooky Empire weekend is how you miss the three people you came for. It's on this list because horror fandom is one of the most loyal communities in American culture, and this is the room where it concentrates once a year and proves it.

The big one down the coast takes all the attention. The people who come to this one prefer it that way, and they are quietly glad you have not worked it out yet.
Three days at the Convention Center — celebrity signings, panels, and an exhibitor floor that runs independent publishers alongside the major houses. Fifty thousand people who grew up on the same stories, turning a hall into a reunion.
The character is different on purpose. This is the industry's own convention, the one people attend in costume because they want to rather than because the press is watching. Comics, sci-fi, gaming, horror, anime, fantasy, across all three days.

Las Vegas Convention Center, 3150 …
Somewhere on that convention floor sits a Dodge Challenger built as a tribute to a mechanic who died, a Bronco engineered for Baja with a 700-mile range, and a Toyota Tacoma so heavily modified the factory DNA has nearly vanished - and the person who built each one is standing right there, willing to explain exactly how. The SEMA Show fills a Las Vegas convention center every November: 2,000 brands, 160,000 automotive professionals, and the most elaborate custom vehicles on earth, the industry's annual argument about what cars can become. This is not rows of production vehicles under fluorescent lights. The smell of fresh paint, engine oil, and ambition is everywhere. The Specialty Equipment Market Association show exists because the aftermarket - the people who make your car yours - needs one place to show what they built this year. Whether it is worth attending depends on who you are. If you are in the automotive world at any level, SEMA Fest on Saturday, the public consumer day, is one of the most inspiring afternoons you can spend in Las Vegas: six-figure full-coverage builds sit 10 feet from you, the designers will talk to you, and the fabricators will explain how they did it. Even if you are not a car person, some of these vehicles are genuinely art, and the Battle of the Builders final is as dramatic as any competition you will watch this year. SEMA Fest is Saturday, November 7 - this is the enthusiast day; the full trade show, Tuesday through Friday, requires industry credentials. Book hotels well in advance; SEMA week fills the Strip. Parking is manageable at the Convention Center, but wear comfortable shoes - the floor is enormous. The Battle of the Builders announcement happens mid-afternoon Saturday and draws a crowd, so position yourself early. Merchandise lines and meet-and-greets with builders and YouTubers run throughout the day. Nothing else in automotive culture operates at this density of craft in a single location. For anyone who has ever looked at a stock car and imagined what it could be, SEMA Fest is the pilgrimage.

Pasadena Convention Center, Pasade…
The thing nobody says out loud about the giant conventions is that you go for the artists and then spend the whole weekend failing to reach them. Six people deep at every table, a crowd that carries you past what you came to see, a morning of your life spent in a badge line.
This is the other version. The vendor hall is the argument: importers with inventory that never appears on domestic sites, small publishers stocking titles nobody else carries, figure dealers holding real stock, and artists who skip the bigger shows entirely. The cosplay skews toward builders — people who spent months on a prop and want a room where you can actually stop and look at it. Friday evening hours let the weekend breathe instead of compressing.

Los Angeles Airport Marriott, 5855…
The best moment at a small convention is never on the schedule. It is the twenty minutes after a panel ends when the voice actor stays in the room and just keeps talking, because it is a small room and nobody is rushing them out.
Pacific Media Expo has run on that for two decades, built by and around the people who make the work: voice actors, anime producers, manga artists, and the Southern California fans who kept the lights on. The panels put you close. The dealer room runs mainstream to deep-cut. The AMV contest is where the real showing-off happens, and the hallway gatherings between official programming are half the reason people come back year after year.
It lands at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott on Century Boulevard, with the full schedule at pacificmediaexpo.com.
If you would rather hear how a show got made than wait in a line for a photo, this is your convention. Send it to the one person who will understand why.

It is a warehouse in City of Industry, open since 1988, and the scale is the thing nobody warns you about: more than two hundred booths, every one independently owned, which means the pricing is a negotiation and the knowledge is uneven and that is the entire pleasure. Graded baseball cards two aisles from loose Gundam kits two aisles from Disney pins. Regulars walk it in a fixed order. The cardboard smell is real and people will admit they come for it.

It is not a Renaissance fair and it is not a reenactment. It is a city remembering that before the rooftop bars and the convention hotels, this was a frontier town where everything was possible and most of it was inadvisable.
The block around the Davis-Horton House fills up with contests, dance troupes, live music, food, and historical activities built on the theory that kids learn best when nobody uses the word learning. A nine-year-old tries panning for gold. A fourteen-year-old pretends not to enjoy the Civil War-era music right up until they do. Somebody in period costume explains how the house survived both a fire and a real estate collapse, which is a very San Diego pair of disasters.
Thousands of families make this a fixed point in the year. Free, all ages, in the Gaslamp.

San Diego Convention Center, 111 W…
Your favorite streamer - the one you have watched for 3,000 hours - is probably in the building, and you can actually walk up and talk to them. That is the whole reason to go.
There is a strange intimacy to a parasocial relationship built over thousands of hours of someone's voice in your headphones, and this is the one place it collapses into a real handshake. You know their cat's name. You know which of their friends you would get along with. They do not know you exist, and somehow that does not make the queue feel foolish, because everyone standing in it is carrying the same lopsided friendship and nobody here is embarrassed about it.
The expo hall plays like a live streaming studio crossed with a gaming lounge: streamers broadcasting right off the floor, sub-notification sounds coming from everywhere, meet-and-greets with people who have lived in your second monitor for years. Variety Arcades, developer showcases, and cosplay competitions for game characters fill out the rest, and the whole convention is built around live streaming culture - the people who make it and the people who never miss a stream, in the same room for once.
Is it worth the trip? If streaming is background noise to you, no - it will read as a trade show for a job you do not have. If a particular channel has been the thing you put on when the apartment is too quiet, then yes, unreservedly. This is the one weekend of the year when a community stops being a chat window and becomes a crowd with faces in it.
What first-timers get wrong is planning around panels and missing the hall. The panels get recorded. The accidental conversation in a signing line does not. Wear shoes you can stand in all day, bring a battery, and accept that your schedule will survive roughly until lunch.
TwitchCon North America 2026 returns to San Diego, September 25-27. Half the crowd stays in the city afterward, and the unofficial meetups scattered around the convention are where the rest of it actually happens.

Somewhere in a long box in your closet is a resin figure you bought at a show like this — a limited colorway, poured in a batch of fifty, that you will never find again because the artist made it once and moved on. You still remember what you paid. You have never once regretted it. That particular hunt, the one that has nothing to do with investment and everything to do with recognition, is the whole reason this room exists.
DesignerCon has been the center of the designer toy world since 2004, and its Las Vegas edition takes over The Expo at World Market Center this November. The floor is art toys, designer vinyl, limited-run resin, plush, custom sneakers, streetwear and original pop art — sold artist-direct, in small batches, with no mass-market retail anywhere in the building.
What separates it from a comic convention is who is standing behind the table. The person taking your money sculpted the thing you are holding. Booths are stacked with one-off customs and exclusive drops that exist in runs of twenty or thirty, and the floor has a particular rhythm: a slow early crawl while collectors map the aisles, a hard sprint when a drop goes live, then long stretches of artists simply talking to the people who own their work. Live painting happens in the open. Trades happen in the aisles. Nobody asks what anything is worth, because everyone already knows.
If you can name the sculptor of a figure on your shelf, this is worth the flight and the hotel. It is not a show for bargain hunting — prices are artist-set and the grails go fast. It is for people who want the object and the story of the object at the same time. Anyone hunting licensed mass-market merchandise will find almost none of it here, and that absence is the entire point.
The scheduling detail that catches first-timers every year: opening night is not a public day. Friday evening is VIP-only, so a general badge gets you in on Saturday, not Friday, and the people who paid up have already walked the floor before you arrive. Plan around it — the best pieces move in the first ninety minutes of each day, which makes Saturday morning the serious shopping window and Sunday the better day for actually speaking with artists, when the crush has thinned and tables are not three deep. Go in with a short list and a hard budget, because the floor is built to defeat both. Bring a padded bag; resin chips, and nobody wants to explain a cracked grail to airport security.
The art toy scene spent two decades proving that a figure made by one person in a small batch could matter as much as anything with a studio logo on the box, and this is the room where that argument gets settled every year. The hunt does not end when the doors close on Sunday. It just moves to whatever the artist makes next.
November 13–15, 2026. Friday is VIP only, 5–9 PM; Saturday 10 AM–7 PM with doors at 9 AM for VIP; Sunday 10 AM–5 PM. The Expo at World Market Center, 435 S Grand Central Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89106.

Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…
Wizards of the Coast brings the official Magic: The Gathering convention to Atlanta — three days of competitive play, exclusive reveals, and side events that don't exist at a local game store. Step into MagicCon and the scale of the Magic ecosystem becomes visceral. The main hall hosts commander pods running nonstop, side event drafts firing every 90 minutes, and a merchandise floor stocked with exclusive foil treatments and collector editions that do not exist outside the convention walls. The World Championship stage draws a live audience who understands the stakes — watching a pro player navigate a complex board state in a top-8 match is legitimately thrilling even to non-competitive attendees. Panel stages feature lead designers previewing the upcoming set, Reality Fracture, with reveals that ripple across the entire community within minutes of announcement. Meet-and-greets with pro players and content creators run throughout the weekend, though they fill fast. The atmosphere skews intensely knowledgeable — this crowd knows what a Rhystic Study is, why it is obnoxious, and will argue about it with warmth. MagicCon Atlanta is for anyone who plays Magic with genuine investment — not necessarily competitive, but committed. If your Friday nights involve a Commander pod and you have at least one deck you have been tuning for six months, you will feel completely at home here. This is not a casual spectator event. It is for the player who loves the game enough to fly across the country for three days of it. First-timers to MagicCon frequently say the same thing: they had no idea how large and how skilled the community actually is until they walked in. Register for ticketed play events before the convention — sealed and draft pods sell out weeks in advance. Bring your trade binder if you have one: the secondary market area moves fast and has genuine deals. Badge merchandise must be picked up onsite; if you miss the pickup window before close on Sunday, you forfeit it. The Worlds stage is open to badge holders but seating near the feature match area is first-come, standing room fills by round 4 of the top 8. Bring cash for artist alley — many illustrators are cash-only and the original card alters available from top artists are some of the most collectible items in the room. For the Magic community, this is not just an event. It is the proof that the game is still alive, still evolving, and still worth every dollar you have spent on it. MagicCon: Atlanta 2026 runs November 13-15 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta.
The same players turn up at regional opens and prereleases the rest of the year; this is the weekend the whole scene is in one building.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Die…
The conventions that last are almost never the biggest ones. They're the ones where the artist in the alley remembers your face from last year, where the panel is small enough that you can actually ask your question, where the regulars know each other's names. Four years in, this is quietly becoming one of those — a room that hasn't forgotten why people go to conventions in the first place.
The DoubleTree keeps it contained in the way that works: fifty-some vendors, fifty-some artists, a layout that creates natural places to stand around and talk, and a hotel bar that fills with cosplayers once the panels let out. It has the energy of a gathering, not a production — the kind of place where you show up not knowing anyone and leave having found your corner of it.
DoubleTree Mission Valley — November 13–15, 2026, three-day badges at sandiegoanimecon.com, free parking, easy from anywhere in the city. Saturday's the peak, Sunday's the long goodbye. Come in costume or don't; both belong here.

Some voices carry a whole history in a single note. Marisela's voice carries quinceañeras and kitchen radios and the moment your mom stopped what she was doing to turn up the volume because Sin El was playing and nothing else in the world mattered for three minutes.
Marisela brings the Eterna Tour 2026 to the San Diego Civic Theatre on Saturday, November 14 at 8 PM. The Civic Theatre is a 2,967-seat venue in downtown San Diego that pairs the elegance of a performing arts center with the intimacy of a room where a ballad singer can make every seat feel like the front row. Marisela has been the voice of Mexican romantic balladry for over forty years — an artist whose catalog is not just listened to but lived in by the communities who grew up with it.
The Civic Theatre is at 1100 Third Avenue, a short walk from the Gaslamp Quarter and the Convention Center trolley stop. Parking at the Civic Center garage.
This is the show you bring the person who raised you on this music. They've been waiting for you to suggest it.

Dodger Stadium, 1000 Vin Scully Av…
Tyler the Creator builds his festival the way he makes his albums — as a complete vision, not a lineup. The 2026 edition runs November 16–17 at Dodger Stadium: Tyler himself, Andre 3000, Erykah Badu, Playboi Carti, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, Daniel Caesar. Sixty thousand people. This is his current read on what matters. Flog Gnaw feels nothing like a conventional music festival. Tyler's aesthetic — Golf Wang colors, surrealist visual direction, Converse collabs, the cartoon universe he's been building since Odd Future — pervades every inch of the grounds. The headliner list reads like Tyler's personal taste index rather than a booking agency's safe plays: Andre 3000's rare public appearances, Earl Sweatshirt's deliberately sparse touring schedule, legacy artists like Erykah Badu alongside younger voices. The surprise guest tradition is genuine — in past years unannounced performers have drawn more conversation than the headliners. The crowd skews young, fashion-conscious, and culturally literate in a way that is self-selecting. Flog Gnaw is the festival where people bring cameras for the fits, not just the performances. This is for people whose music listening doesn't fit a single genre label — who have Tyler the Creator, Badu, Earl, and Daniel Caesar on the same playlist and see nothing contradictory about that. It is for the aesthetically curious. It is not for people who want clear setlist times, grid-pattern stages, and predictable headliner slots. Tyler runs his festival on his own logic, and that's the point. If that energy resonates, Camp Flog Gnaw is one of the few festivals where the curation is unambiguously the product. Two-day passes sell significantly faster than single-day. The Dodger Stadium location is accessible by Metro (Dodger Stadium Express from Union Station — skip the parking). Merchandise drops at Flog Gnaw are serious and sell out quickly; the Golf Wang collabs available only at the festival have become collector items. Arrive early day one — the grounds have carnival rides, food, and art installations that reward exploration before the headliners. Andre 3000's live appearances remain rare enough to justify the trip from anywhere in the country. Tyler the Creator built a world — Golf Wang, Odd Future, Igor, Call Me If You Get Lost, Cherry Bomb — and Flog Gnaw is where that world becomes a place you can stand in for two days. The music industry produces thousands of festivals. Very few of them feel like they could only exist because one specific person willed them into being. Flog Gnaw is one of them. Tickets at Ticketmaster. November 16-17, 2026, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.

Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…
The American South's longest-running anime convention has been meeting in Atlanta every September since 1997. Anime Weekend Atlanta is where the Southeast's anime fandom comes to recognize itself. Walk the AWA floor on a Thursday night and the energy hits immediately: cosplayers in elaborate handmade builds line the escalators, artist alley tables overflow with original prints and fan art, and the programming halls pulse with AMVs, panel debates, and late-night gaming tournaments that run until 3 AM. The dealers room is legitimately staggering — vintage merchandise, imports, rare figures, and indie creators all packed into a space where you could spend a full day and still miss things. The masquerade on Saturday night is one of the most theatrical cosplay competitions in the country, drawing contestants who have spent months on a single build. AWA moves differently than the mega-cons: it feels less like a trade show and more like a reunion — because for thousands of attendees, it genuinely is. If you grew up watching anime in the South and never found your people, AWA is the answer. This is not for casual fans who think anime is just Naruto and Dragon Ball. It is for people who obsess over seasonal charts, debate subculture lore, and have a hard drive full of unfinished cosplay plans. First-timers frequently describe AWA as the con that finally felt like home. If you are that person — the one who learned Japanese from subtitles and named a pet after a character — this is worth every flight mile. Book your hotel at the World Congress Center Marriott before August or it will sell out — AWA attendees treat the hotel block as sacred and it fills months in advance. Badge pickup lines on Thursday afternoon are brutal; opt for pre-registration and arrive before noon. The dealers room has no ATMs inside — bring cash, bring more than you think you need, and budget for at least one impulse figure you did not plan for. The programming schedule releases about six weeks before the event and fills fast; panel rooms cap out, so plan your must-see events 30 minutes early. The loading dock area outside Building C is where the best spontaneous cosplay photo shoots happen after dark. It is the convention that proved the South has always had its own thriving fan culture — it just needed a room big enough to hold it. AWA 2026 runs November 19-22 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Building C, Atlanta.
The Southern con circuit keeps going the rest of the year in far smaller hotels, and the same people build costumes for all of it.

You are allowed to open the door and sit in a car that has not gone on sale and may never go on sale. Nobody stops you. That is the whole appeal, and it is a strange kind of privilege.
For over a century this has been where automakers make the announcements that decide the next few years. Concepts still months away from a yes or no. Battery platforms shown in public for the first time. Model years kept secret until somebody pulls a sheet off. The trade days come first and take most of the reveals, and the public days that follow add ride-alongs, driving demos and enough floor space to lose an afternoon in. Performance, luxury, trucks and the electrified stuff each get their own territory.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
In the most car-dependent city in America, the future of the thing everyone drives arrives for two weeks in a single hall - concept cars that may never be built, standing at full scale, glowing under dramatic light. The LA Auto Show opens at the LA Convention Center in late November, the world's automakers presenting their current thinking to the people who will actually drive it. Walking the floor is an exercise in cultural prediction. The main hall holds every major manufacturer's flagship display, vehicles you have only read about suddenly appearing at full scale, and the concept cars are the centerpiece every year - designed to show capability rather than sell product. Adjacent to the main floor, the Connected Car Expo runs at the same time, showing the technology that will eventually be embedded in every vehicle, while the Dream Drive pavilion offers test drives at select activations. AutoMobility LA, the industry media days the preceding week, produces most of the announcement news; the public show is where those announcements become tangible. Is it worth attending? For car enthusiasts, straightforwardly yes - the density of new vehicles in one place, with full access and no appointment, is rare. For casual visitors, the show rewards curiosity: the concept cars are genuinely strange and beautiful in ways photographs never capture, and the electric vehicle pavilion gives most major manufacturers' EV lineups the same room, the clearest possible illustration of where the industry is in its transition. Tickets are available online and at the door - online saves time at entry. The Convention Center is reachable by Metro (Pico or Convention Center stations), and weekday mornings are the least crowded windows if you have flexibility. The show runs from late November into early December, coinciding with the opening of the holiday retail season downtown, so the area is busy beyond the show itself. It has historically allowed children under 12 free with an adult - check the official site for 2026 pricing and hours. What makes it worth the trip is simple: it is one of the few annual events in any industry where the most powerful companies in the world put their most ambitious work in one room and ask the public to react. The automotive industry employs more people than any sector in the United States, and the LA show is its most public annual report. Even without buying a car, walking it is a way of reading the industry's intentions for the next decade.

DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valle…
The hotel lobby at midnight is where the real convention happens. Someone brought a Switch, someone else brought a projector, and a group of strangers who met four hours ago are playing like they have known each other since middle school. San Diego LAN runs alongside the San Diego Anime Convention at the DoubleTree in Mission Valley, with Saturday and Sunday sessions from 11 AM to 6 PM, mixing strategy and FPS titles with a house party feel that competitive gaming lost somewhere along the way. VR stations, board games, and video games spanning every genre and generation fill the game room at a volume that makes you forget there is an anime convention happening in the next ballroom. This is not a tournament with spectators — it is a living room that happens to hold a hundred people who all brought their own controllers. Miami Beach Convention Center, 190…
You leave having seen things that will show up in auction records and retrospectives for the next decade - and you did not have to buy a single piece to be part of it. For one week in December, Miami Beach becomes the most concentrated gathering of contemporary art in the Western Hemisphere: 250 galleries from 30 countries, and a city that builds its entire social calendar around them. The main fair at the Convention Center is overwhelming in the best sense, with galleries from New York, London, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo competing for attention across a space that would hold several football fields. Wynwood's murals and the Design District's boutiques become satellite venues. Opening-night parties are invitation-only, but the energy of the week bleeds into every restaurant and hotel lobby in South Beach. This is not a quiet museum experience - it is a city in a specific, charged state of collective attention that happens once a year and then recedes. It is worth attending even with no intention of buying: the public programming includes talks, artist installations, and outdoor screenings, and the works you encounter at the main fair and at satellite shows like Untitled, NADA, and Scope are what the contemporary art world is actively debating in real time. If you care what art is doing right now, this is where you go to find out. Secure a hotel early - December in Miami Beach is peak season and fair proximity commands a premium. The main fair requires a ticket ($50-100 depending on day and time); many satellite fairs are free. RSVP to gallery openings in advance through their own websites, and book Design District restaurants weeks out. A car or rideshare is more flexible than the free shuttle. The main fair is most crowded on preview days (Wednesday and Thursday) and thinnest on Sunday, when collectors pack up their acquisitions. Miami absorbs the energy of the global art market and does not quite release it until January. December in Miami Beach.

There is a convention center in Fort Worth where, for three days every December, the cowboys and the cosplayers share the same sidewalk — and nobody blinks, because Texas has always been bigger than any one identity.
Anime Frontier returns to the Fort Worth Convention Center December 4–6, 2026, for three days of premieres, panels, and special appearances from some of the biggest names in anime and manga. Presented by Crunchyroll, Anime Frontier has carved out a space that the East Coast cons like Anime NYC and Otakon and West Coast cons like Anime Expo do not cover — the entire middle of the country, where anime fandom runs just as deep but the nearest major convention used to be a 12-hour drive. The convention has grown rapidly since its launch, filling a geographic gap that the anime community had been complaining about for years.
The exhibitor hall and artist alley bring together hundreds of vendors, from official merch drops to independent artists whose work you will only find at cons like this. The programming runs from industry panels and world premieres to cosplay showcases and community meetups, and the scale is big enough to feel like a real convention without the crushing density of a 100K-attendance mega-con. New for 2026 is a Kids Sunday ticket and a dedicated Family Zone presented by Scholastic — a signal that Anime Frontier is building for the next generation of fans, not just serving the current one.
If you are an anime fan in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, or anywhere in the central United States, Anime Frontier is the con that finally means you do not have to fly to a coast. If you are a veteran con-goer from either coast, Fort Worth offers something the big cons cannot — a manageable size, walkable downtown hotels and restaurants, and the Texas hospitality that makes out-of-towners want to come back every year.
Tickets include single-day and 3-day badges, with Premium AF passes for extra access and perks. Ordering by October 23 gets your badge shipped before the event. Fort Worth in December is mild enough for outdoor cosplay without the summer heat that plagues most anime cons. The convention center is downtown, walkable to dozens of restaurants and bars, and the whole experience feels like a community gathering rather than a corporate expo. For the anime community in the middle of America, Anime Frontier is no longer the new con — it is the home con.

Dec 4 – Dec 7, 2026
Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11…
Three days in Philadelphia in December where 40,000 people bring board games, card games, miniatures, and roleplaying campaigns. PAX Unplugged is the largest dedicated tabletop gaming floor in America. The experience at PAX Unplugged is unlike any other convention on the American calendar. The main show floor stretches across the convention center's enormous exhibit hall — rows of publishers demonstrating unreleased games, free-play libraries with thousands of titles available to check out and bring to any open table, and tournament halls running competitive and casual formats simultaneously. The tabletop RPG hall operates all four days — Dungeon Masters running games, new systems getting their first public playtests. You can sit down at a table with strangers and be deep inside an adventure within ten minutes. The community here is self-selected for exactly this openness: people who came to Philadelphia in December to play games with other people who came to Philadelphia in December to play games. Worth it? If you play tabletop games in any format — board games with family, Dungeons & Dragons with friends, Magic: The Gathering competitively — PAX Unplugged is the one event that puts everything you care about in one room simultaneously. Publishers premiere new games here first. Designers are on the floor demoing their own creations. Competitive players converge on the same tournament halls. The identity gate is simple: if games played around a table are how you experience community, this is where your community gathers every December. The Pennsylvania Convention Center connects via enclosed walkway to multiple hotels — booking hotel before registration opens is essential, as nearby properties sell out within hours of badge sales going live. Philadelphia's transit system (SEPTA) provides subway access to the convention center from major neighborhoods and the airport (Airport Line → Center City). Badges sell in tiers; 4-day badges sell fastest. The Library of Games (free-play checkout) has no extra charge — one of the best systems at any convention for trying new titles without commitment. Pack layers; Philadelphia in December is cold, and the convention center's cavernous exhibit hall runs warmer than the streets outside. In an entertainment landscape built around passive consumption, tens of thousands of people travel to Philadelphia each December to play games with each other. The ticket is participation, not observation. December in Philadelphia.

Small press comics are made by people who mostly lose money doing it, which is exactly why the work is interesting, and why a room full of them feels different from a convention floor. No celebrity photo ops here, no film studios, no queue for a Funko exclusive — just long tables of risograph zines, hand-bound books, and cartoonists sitting behind their own work explaining it to whoever stops. Los Angeles has an unusually deep bench of independent cartoonists because the animation industry pays some of them to live here, and this is the weekend they show what they make when nobody is art-directing. Admission is deliberately low-barrier and the crowd skews toward art students, working illustrators, and people who will spend forty dollars on something printed in an edition of sixty. December 12 and 13, 2026, at the Homenetmen Ararat North Campus on Dolores Street in Glassell Park. It runs annually, and the same cartoonists turn up year over year, which is how you watch a scene grow in real time.

Everyone who collected anything as a kid still has the box they never threw out. This is a thousand dealer tables of other people's boxes. What separates Collect-A-Con from an ordinary card show is that it refuses to treat anime as a side room — graded Pokémon slabs, One Piece singles, vintage Yu-Gi-Oh and a full cosplay crowd all move through the same hall at the same volume, and the organizers bill it as the largest trading card, anime and pop culture convention in the country. The December edition changes the character of the room in a way the summer dates never do: it lands in the dead week before Christmas, so a real share of the floor is people hunting a gift for the one person on their list who is impossible to buy for, and the rest are people spending gift money a few days early and not pretending otherwise. Two days, ten to five, at the Convention Center downtown. Saturday and Sunday, December 19 and 20.

Las Vegas Convention Center, 3150 …
Every January, a room in Las Vegas shows you the thing you will recognize in a store six months from now and think, quietly, I already knew about that. That preview feeling is the whole reason people come back - not to buy, but to find out what is coming.
The scale is unlike any trade show you have attended. Spread across 2.6 million square feet - the Convention Center, Venetian Expo, and satellite hotel venues across the Strip - CES is less a conference than a city inside a city. Entire halls are dedicated to automotive technology, health tech, immersive entertainment, robotics, and AI hardware. Keynote stages host the CEOs of Samsung, Sony, Nvidia, and Intel. The demo floors are where prototypes become real - you will see things that do not exist for sale yet, and half a year later you will recognize them on shelves. If you have any curiosity about where technology is heading, it delivers, unambiguously; this is not for people who want to buy things, it is for people who want to understand what is being built. If your frame is "I already know what I like," CES will feel overwhelming. If your frame is "I want to know what I don't know yet," it will feel like electricity.
Plan for 25,000 steps a day and wear the most comfortable shoes you own. Register early - attendee badges are required and pricing increases as the show approaches. Download the CES app and pre-plan your exhibitor list by hall and day. The Las Vegas Convention Center's underground Loop connects buildings, but lines build fast, so walking is often faster; stay on the north end of the Strip near the LVCC to minimize transit time. The South Hall eats first-day schedules, so plan it for day two or three. Most cultural events reflect the world as it is; CES previews the world as it is being redesigned. The exhibitors are not selling products - they are proposing futures, and every year a handful of those proposals become the devices in your pocket two years later. Attending even once rewires your sense of what "soon" means. CES 2027 takes place in Las Vegas, NV.

Galleries can make you feel like you walked into someone else's dinner party. The hush, the person at the desk who does not look up, the price list nobody offers you. So you learn to admire things from the sidewalk and keep walking.
A convention hall is the opposite problem, and the better one. Dealers from everywhere, no hush, no correct route through any of it — you wander, you stare, you walk away from things that do not land. Nobody is tracking whether you belong.
Worth knowing: Wednesday is not really the opening. Wednesday is the benefit night at two hundred fifty dollars a head, a different crowd entirely. Thursday at noon is when the doors open for everybody else, at forty.
Five days across West Hall and Petree Hall downtown, and more of it than one visit holds. Everyone walks out arguing about one painting.

Long Beach Convention Center, 300 …
Some knowledge you cannot buy: which panels are worth lining up an hour early for, which guest signings empty out fast, which late-night rooms never make it onto the printed schedule. Regulars hand that down to each other here, and it is the real inheritance of a convention that has been meeting for over two decades.
The tradeoff for running smaller than Anime Expo is access. To the guests, who trend toward voice actors and fan creators who build their year around Southern California cons. To the programming, which you can actually get into. To each other — the dealer room and artist alley run at a scale where you can move without turning sideways.
Four days at the Long Beach Convention Center, January 7-10, 2027, and they open the convention calendar for the whole region.
Send this to whoever you stood next to in line last year. They are already planning.

800 W Katella Ave, Anaheim, CA 928…
Ten thousand people playing ten thousand different instruments at once, badly and joyfully, all day — you hear it before you get through the doors.
Every January, everybody who makes a living from sound converges on Anaheim: guitar builders, synth companies, drum makers, studio electronics, DJ hardware, live sound rigs, recording software, and whatever the newest thing is that nobody has settled on a name for. The floor is genuinely too large to cover in a day, so plan on two.
It is primarily a trade show, which means full access wants professional credentials. But the demos happen in the open, the educational programming is real, and the whole city runs an unofficial second convention after hours — brand showcases, late parties, and acoustic sets in hotel lobbies where somebody you have never heard of quietly destroys the room.
If you play seriously, this is the closest thing your life has to a pilgrimage. Go touch the expensive one.

The difference between singing along and taking the microphone is roughly the difference between watching and being watched, and one of those changes your whole evening.
That is the entire format. A live band, a songbook of the records that ruined and rescued you somewhere around fifteen, and a queue of people who have been rehearsing in the car for years without admitting it. Nobody is good. Being good is not the point and would arguably wreck it. The room's job is to carry whoever is up there, and a room full of people who all know the same bridge is extremely good at that job.
Doors at eight, going at nine, a Friday in February.
February 5, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the person you would want holding the other microphone. This scene runs a whole year of these across the county and the karaoke ones are where the strangers stop being strangers fastest.

At most conventions the person who actually drew the thing is behind a rope with a line and a forty-second window. Here they are sitting at a table with an empty chair beside them.
That is the entire identity of this one-day show: writers, pencilers, inkers, colorists, letterers — working professionals available for a real conversation about the craft instead of a signature and a shove. The floor treats mainstream and alternative as equals, Marvel and DC in the same aisles as independent publishers and self-published creators who came because the audience here came specifically for comics. Artist alley carries a density of professional quality that bigger, more casual shows cannot match.
One day only, at the convention center downtown, with the Metro A Line running straight into Long Beach. Check the official site for the date.
Go with the person who lent you their first trade paperback. Buy them something original.

There is a photograph you have seen without knowing where it came from: someone in an elaborate costume standing on a marble staircase under an eighteen-story glass atrium, winter light coming through, looking like a still from a film that was never made. That is Katsucon, and the building is most of the reason it has the reputation it does. Held every February at the Gaylord National Resort on the Potomac just outside Washington, it is among the most photographed anime conventions in the world, and the cosplay community treats a weekend there as something closer to a pilgrimage than a trip.
The atrium is the event. Other conventions have panels and dealers and artist alleys, and Katsucon has those too, but what actually happens is that thousands of people spend three days building and wearing things they worked on since summer, and then the building gives them the best backdrop in North America to be seen in. Photographers book months ahead. There are impromptu gatherings by series on the staircases at all hours. Because the whole thing is under one roof and the weather outside is February in Maryland, the convention never really stops — the hallways at three in the morning are as busy as the floor at noon.
Worth it? If you make things — sew, foam-smith, wig-style, prop-build — this is the room where that labor is understood without explanation, and there is no substitute for that. If you are coming to shop or to meet voice actors, other conventions do that better and cheaper. Katsucon is for the makers and the people who love watching them, and it is honest about that. First-timers who come without a costume routinely report it was still the best convention they had been to, because the spectacle is genuinely free to watch.
What to know: the host hotel sells out almost immediately, and staying on-site is materially different from staying off — the atrium at night is the whole point. Budget for that. Bring a repair kit; something will break. The convention center portion and the hotel portion are connected but the walk is longer than it looks in costume. And Friday is the quiet day worth arriving for.
It earns a place here because it is the clearest example in American fandom of a venue and a community finding each other perfectly, and because knowing it exists changes what you think a costume is for. Katsucon 2027 runs February 12–14, 2027 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland.

SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Drive, …
The Super Bowl has come to Los Angeles before. It has never come to SoFi. That changes February 7, 2027 — at the half-billion-dollar stadium that opened in 2020 and changed what a modern NFL venue can look like: translucent canopy, open-air California design, Hollywood Park campus surrounding it.
What Super Bowl week in Los Angeles looks and feels like is unlike any other sporting event on the calendar. The week before the game, Radio Row draws every media personality with a microphone. The NFL Experience fan festival opens to the public at the Convention Center. Celebrity parties are announced and cancelled and announced again. The halftime show rehearsals happen under tight security at the stadium while the surrounding streets fill with brand activations, pop-ups, and spontaneous gatherings of fans who couldn't get tickets but wanted to be near the thing. Los Angeles absorbs the Super Bowl differently than Nashville or Minneapolis — the entertainment industry and sports culture overlap here in a way that produces genuine energy rather than manufactured excitement.
Is the Super Bowl worth attending in person? If you have the means and the access, the answer is yes, but the experience is as much about the week as the game. Super Bowl tickets are among the most expensive in sports, and the seat you occupy at game time may matter less than the four days of surrounding events, parties, and city energy that build toward kickoff. For the majority of people who will experience Super Bowl LXI from Los Angeles without attending the game, the city itself becomes a venue. Watch parties at venues across SoCal will be among the most concentrated social events of the year.
What to know: Tickets sell through the NFL and Ticketmaster — secondary market prices will be extreme. The SoFi Stadium campus includes a performance venue (YouTube Theater), a casino (Inglewood), and hotel development in progress; the entertainment zone around the stadium is walkable and dense. Metro's C Line (Green) stops at Hawthorne/Lennox, about a 20-minute walk from SoFi. Parking is limited and expensive; transit from LAX is the recommended option for most attendees. The week's best experiences are often free — Radio Row, fan zones, and the energy of the city.
Super Bowl LXI matters for one reason beyond the game itself: it is the largest single-day American cultural event, and in 2027 it comes to Los Angeles. The convergence of the NFL, Hollywood, the music industry (halftime show), and the national media in one city for one weekend creates a cultural moment that extends far beyond the game. Knowing about it, knowing what week to plan around it, knowing the venue and the city — that is the preparation that turns an ordinary February into the right February.

San Diego Convention Center, 111 W…
The hardest part of this hobby was never the rules. It is finding four other people who are free the same night and will actually see the game through to the end.
That is what the Find a Game board solves, and it is the best thing in the building: you write down what you want to play, somebody writes their name under it, and an hour later you are three turns deep with strangers. The open library holds thousands of titles you can check out and carry to a table — first-come, a couple of hours at a time, so the popular boxes circulate all day. Around it run organized play, publisher demos of things not out yet, miniature wargames, and RPG slots going from morning until the hall closes.
It takes a full weekend of the San Diego Convention Center, trolley-accessible, with the Gaslamp right there for when the hall shuts and nobody is ready to stop.
Send it to the friend with the shelf of boxes still in shrink wrap.

Comic conventions mostly stopped being about comics some time in the last twenty years, which is a reasonable business decision and a real loss. The Seattle one is the largest that never quite let go. Artist alley here is not an afterthought tucked behind the celebrity photo ops — it is enormous, central, and full of people who make the actual books, which is why working comics professionals treat this as the show they look forward to rather than the one they are contractually obliged to attend.
What it feels like is a very large city being unusually generous for four days in March. The Seattle Convention Center sits right in the middle of downtown, so the convention spills into the surrounding blocks in a way that walled-off complexes never allow — bars fill with people in costume, restaurants run specials, the whole neighborhood participates. Inside, the programming leans hard into craft: how pages get made, how a script becomes art, panels where writers talk about work rather than about announcements. The crowd is noticeably more mixed in age than most conventions, and considerably more likely to be carrying a stack of books they are getting signed.
Is it worth it? If you read comics — actually read them, not just watch the adaptations — this is the best large convention in the country for you, and the artist alley alone justifies the trip. If you are chasing exclusive collectibles or a specific film cast, the bigger coastal shows do that better. What Seattle does better than anyone is put you in a room with the people who make the thing you love, at a scale where you can actually talk to them.
What to know: March in Seattle is grey and wet and nobody minds. Buy artist alley prints early on Thursday or Friday because the good ones sell out. Bring a portfolio bag if you are collecting anything on paper. The convention center's layout has two buildings now; check which one your panel is in before you walk. And the small-press section, which most attendees walk straight past, is consistently where the next few years of comics are sitting on folding tables.
It is here because a convention that still centers the artists is genuinely rare, and because knowing there is one place where that is still true tells you something worth knowing about the form. Emerald City Comic Con 2027 runs March 4–7, 2027 at the Seattle Convention Center.

Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E …
The panels are the reason to go, which is not a sentence anyone gets to say honestly about most conventions. Blame the geography. This corner of the city sits within a few miles of Caltech, JPL, and the studios, which produces a fan base that reads closely, argues in specifics, and will not let a guest coast through a Q and A. The questions are better here. Everybody notices it eventually.
The rest is the good stuff done properly: voice actor panels and signings, a cosplay competition judged on actual craftsmanship, an artist alley of independent creators selling original work, a vendor hall, and a game room running open play all weekend.
Old Town is the other half of the argument — you walk out for real dinner instead of eating a pretzel over a trash can, and the Gold Line puts you a few blocks off.
Bring the friend who takes the craftsmanship judging personally. They will find their people inside of an hour.

Mar 15 – Mar 21, 2027
Austin Convention Center, 500 E Ce…
If you have ever felt like the interesting version of American culture is happening somewhere you're not, this is the address it's happening at. For nine days every March, Austin becomes the one place where the music industry, the film industry, and the technology industry all arrive at once and go looking for the same parties. SXSW isn't a single event -- it's a city-sized festival. The Music Conference alone hosts thousands of acts across hundreds of venues, from dive bars and converted warehouses to the Austin Convention Center and the open air of Auditorium Shores. At the same time, the Film & TV Festival premieres features and series that go on to win Oscars and Emmys, and the Interactive and Emerging Technology conference hosts the conversations that decide how the industry thinks about what comes next. These three things happen simultaneously, in the same zip code, and the cross-pollination isn't incidental -- it is the product. The person who catches a breakthrough band at midnight, a groundbreaking documentary at noon, and stumbles into a startup pitch at 3pm isn't having three experiences. They're having the SXSW experience.
The festival rewards whoever arrives with no fixed agenda and the flexibility to chase what's interesting, and punishes the over-planner who misses the spontaneous set that becomes the most-talked-about performance of the year. The unofficial parties and free shows matter as much as the official programming -- sometimes more. Austin in March is warm but unpredictable, so layers are essential and comfortable shoes are mandatory. SXSW runs on a badge system: the Platinum badge accesses everything, the Music badge covers all official showcases, and unofficial events run free and parallel across the city, often carrying the most interesting programming of all. Book accommodation six to twelve months out, because Austin fills completely. The Convention Center is the official hub, but the real SXSW happens on 6th Street, Red River, and along the South Congress corridor.
SXSW 2027 earns its place among the country's essential cultural moments because it's the single event where American creative culture most fully takes stock of itself. The lineup hasn't been announced yet -- and the anticipation before the announcement is itself part of the ritual. Every year, artists, filmmakers, and technologists make their American debut here. Every year, something that started in a 200-capacity Austin venue becomes the story everyone's telling by April. This isn't just where culture happens -- it's where culture decides what it is.
Austin spends the rest of the year as the city where those small rooms actually are, which is where the next one of these starts.

Vendors are still cutting boxes open when you walk in, and the exclusives are all sitting untouched on the shelf. Nobody has bought anything yet. The whole hall is laid out in front of you, quiet, and for a few hours you get to learn it before it becomes a scrum.
That is the reward for planning far enough ahead. Premium badge holders get the floor, the exclusives, and artist alley first — convention-only limited editions, publisher variants, and pieces from the most in-demand creators that are simply gone by Saturday afternoon. Programming is deliberately thin, a handful of panels and screenings, because the point is the floor: map it, mark what you want, buy before the competition arrives.
Access requires the full weekend badge; there is no single-day version of this evening. The Anaheim convention center, with shuttles and the rail station close.
The people who plan ahead have already decided. Decide alongside them.

The oldest and largest anime convention in the Pacific Northwest was started by a group of college students in the mid-nineties, back when liking this at all required explaining yourself, and it is still run entirely by volunteers. That fact shapes everything about the weekend. Nobody is extracting margin from you. The programming is built by people who wanted it to exist rather than by a department, which is why the schedule is full of things no commercial convention would ever green-light.
What that produces is a convention with an unusually high proportion of actual content — panels running past midnight, a serious concert program, a masquerade that people prepare for over months, and a video programming track that still shows things on a screen in a dark room to whoever wanders in. There is a formal ball. There is a chess tournament. The dealer hall is large but is not the center of gravity, which at an anime convention in the current era is genuinely unusual. The crowd skews younger than the older-guard conventions and the atmosphere is closer to a very large school event than to a trade show, in the best possible way.
Worth it? If you want a convention where the programming rather than the shopping is the reason to be there, this is one of a handful left in the country, and it is the best of them on the West Coast outside of Los Angeles. If you are coming primarily for big-name industry announcements, the larger shows will serve you better. Sakura-Con is for people who want to spend three days inside the thing rather than adjacent to it.
What to know before you go: registration opens early and the price ladder rewards buying well ahead. Late March in Seattle means rain, and the walk between the convention center and most hotels is short but unsheltered. The concerts are included with a badge and fill up, so line early for the ones you care about. Bring cash for artist alley. And the volunteer staff will genuinely help you if you ask, because they are attendees too.
It belongs on this list because a thirty-year-old, volunteer-run, still-thriving convention is evidence that a community can build something durable without anyone monetizing it, and that is worth knowing exists. Sakura-Con 2027 runs March 26–28, 2027 at the Seattle Convention Center.

Anaheim Convention Center, 800 W K…
Everyone has a friend who has spent a decade losing the badge lottery down in San Diego. This is where you take them.
Same organization runs it, same programming instincts, and a floor you can actually cross without a strategy meeting. Sixty thousand people rather than six figures, which is the difference between a convention and an evacuation drill. Publisher booths, artist alley, preview screenings, exclusive merch, and the Saturday-night masquerade, which is the flagship — costumes built over months, walked in front of a crowd that knows exactly how hard the seams were.
Because the badges are gettable and the halls are navigable, it has quietly become the best first convention a person can have. Families bring kids. First-timers stop being first-timers. The panel access is still real.
Anaheim Convention Center, three days in March, badges on sale months ahead with the good tiers moving fast.
Take the person who has been saying next year about the other one for a decade. End the streak.

The whole case for this convention is a math problem. You can actually reach three or four things you cared about in a single day. At the bigger show you pick one and spend the afternoon in a line for it.
Saturday is the peak — Hall B panels with talent in the room, the exhibit floor and artist alley at full activity, exclusive merch lines, and the masquerade final in the evening. That last one is the sleeper: judged on craftsmanship and performance, and the entrants treat the competition exactly as seriously as they treated the building of the costume. Same production ambition as the bigger convention, in a footprint you can cross without a strategy meeting.
Saturday single-day badges go first; the full convention runs the weekend in Anaheim.

Ask a veteran convention-goer which day they actually love and a surprising number will say the last one — when the urgency has drained out and what is left is a hall full of people who came for the same thing, quietly aware it is ending for another year.
Sunday is the undervalued badge. Crowds thin. Artist Alley cuts prices on whatever is left rather than haul it home. Vendors bundle things that were not bundled on Friday. Publishers discount remaining stock. The competition for panel seats evaporates and the convention finally becomes a social space instead of a logistics problem.
Closing panels run, and next year's dates get announced on the way out the door, which hands everyone something to look forward to before they have even reached the parking structure.
Take the train and stay until they sweep the floor. The last hour is the one people remember.

Every day· Next Apr 1
Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
Fifty years ago a farm boy looked up at twin suns and a generation learned what longing sounds like.
Star Wars Celebration returns to Los Angeles on April 1–4, 2027, to mark the 50th anniversary of the film that changed everything. This is the gathering where Lucasfilm pulls back the curtain — world premieres of upcoming projects, panels with the creators who are building the next chapters, first looks at footage that won't exist anywhere else for months. The show floor spans the LA Convention Center with walk-through exhibits, a cosplay showcase that draws the most ambitious builders on the planet, exclusive merchandise that sells out before lunch, and the collective energy of tens of thousands of people who all trace something essential about who they are back to that same opening crawl.
The 50th anniversary makes this one different. Half a century of stories, characters, music, and moments that shaped how an entire culture thinks about heroism, redemption, and the distance between who you are and who you could be. Whether you've been here since 1977 or discovered it last year, Celebration is the room where every version of that journey is valid.
What makes Star Wars Celebration unlike any other fan convention is that it is the only place where the future of the franchise is revealed first. Every major announcement — from The Mandalorian's debut trailer to Ahsoka's first footage to the reveal of new theatrical films — happened at Celebration before it happened anywhere else. The industry comes because Lucasfilm treats this room as the premiere venue. The fans come because they've been part of this story longer than most relationships in their lives.
Expect four full days of programming: the headline showcase at the Honda Center (separate ticket tier), hundreds of panels across multiple stages, the Fan Stage where cosplayers and community creators take the spotlight, interactive experiences that put you inside the worlds of the saga, and the Artist Alley where illustrators who shaped the visual language of Star Wars sell original work.
Four-day adult passes from $260.99. Children 4–12 from $105.99. Los Angeles Convention Center. April 1–4, 2027. The anniversary year has screenings and smaller gatherings running all through it, and the people in this room will be at those too.

Video games are played alone in a room by almost everybody, almost all of the time, and once a year a few tens of thousands of people who do that go stand in a convention hall in Boston to be reminded it is not actually a solitary hobby. That is the whole emotional mechanism of PAX East and it is more powerful than the announcements and the demo queues suggest.
The floor is enormous and loud. Major publishers build elaborate booths for games nobody has played yet, and the lines for those can eat an afternoon — but the part regulars organize their weekend around is the indie section, where a person who spent four years making something is standing behind a folding table watching you play it. That interaction does not exist anywhere else. Elsewhere in the building there are freeplay areas with hundreds of consoles and PCs, a tabletop hall running around the clock, tournaments, concerts, and a handheld lounge where people simply sit on the floor together playing separately, which is somehow the most affecting room in the place. The Enforcers — volunteer staff in distinctive shirts — set a tone of aggressive friendliness that keeps a very large crowd unusually pleasant.
Worth it? If games are a real part of your identity rather than a way to pass time, yes, and specifically for the indie hall and the freeplay rooms rather than the big booths. If you only want to see trailers, they will be online within the hour and you can watch them from your couch. What you cannot get remotely is the experience of being one of thousands of people who all care about the same thing, in a city that has been overtaken by it for four days.
What to know: badges sell out months in advance and the four-day pass goes first. Wear real shoes; you will walk many miles on concrete. The convention center is a walk from most affordable hotels, and Boston in April can be anything from snow to seventy degrees. Eat before you get inside. And the queue room system means the smart move is picking two or three big demos and letting the rest go.
It is on this list because the annual gathering of a hobby that is otherwise entirely private is a genuinely interesting cultural event, whether or not you go. PAX East 2027 runs April 22–25, 2027 at the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston.

Washington takes itself extremely seriously fifty-one weekends a year, and once each spring several tens of thousands of people in costume take over its convention center and the effect is genuinely restorative. Awesome Con is the capital's pop culture convention, and its particular character comes from the city it happens in: there is a substantial science track built with the Smithsonian and NASA sitting directly alongside the comics and the film guests, and it does not feel bolted on.
What that produces is a convention where a nine-year-old can go from a panel by an actual planetary scientist to a line for a voice actor without leaving the building, and where the crowd is noticeably more family-heavy and more racially mixed than most large cons. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is enormous and easy to move around, which matters more than people expect — there is room to sit, room to eat, room for kids to melt down and recover. Artist alley is strong. The cosplay is competitive without being cliquish. And because it is April in Washington, the city outside is at its best; a lot of attendees build a weekend around the museums, which are free.
Worth it? If you have children who are into any of this, it is one of the best large conventions in the country for that, and the science programming is a genuine differentiator rather than a marketing line. If you are a hardcore collector chasing exclusives, the bigger coastal shows have deeper inventory. Awesome Con is broad rather than deep, and that breadth is the point.
What to know before you go: the convention center sits on top of a Metro station, so do not drive — parking downtown is punitive and the trains run late. Badges are cheaper in advance and children's pricing is generous. Saturday is by far the busiest day; Friday and Sunday are calmer and better for actually talking to artists. Bring a bag for prints. And if you are traveling in, the museums a few blocks away mean the non-convention hours are unusually well spent.
It is on this list because a convention that treats curiosity and fandom as the same impulse is a rarer thing than it should be, and because a weekend where the most self-serious city in America lets go is worth knowing about. Awesome Con 2027 runs April 23–25, 2027 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Chicago spent years being treated as a stop rather than a destination on the convention circuit, and the show that changed that did it by being unusually good at the unglamorous parts — floor layout, panel scheduling, actually letting people talk to creators. C2E2 has grown into the Midwest's flagship pop culture convention, held each spring at McCormick Place on the lakefront, and it now draws six figures of attendance across a weekend.
The experience is defined by scale plus air. McCormick Place is one of the largest convention buildings in North America, which means that even at peak Saturday the floor does not have the crushing quality that smaller venues develop. The artist alley and the comics guests are substantial, the anime and gaming presence has grown considerably, and the cosplay championship is a serious competitive event rather than a costume parade. What regulars single out is the programming: panels here are frequently craft-focused and long enough to get somewhere, and the moderators generally know the material. There is also a genuinely good kids' area, which makes it workable as a family weekend rather than a thing one parent does alone.
Is it worth it? If you live anywhere in the middle of the country, this is your show and there is no real competitor — the alternative is flying to a coast. If you already attend two or three large conventions a year on the coasts, C2E2 will feel familiar rather than revelatory, though the artist lineup is consistently strong. It is best understood as the most complete general-purpose fan convention between the coasts.
What to know: McCormick Place is not downtown and the walk from most hotels is longer than the map suggests; use the shuttles or plan for a train. Chicago in late April can be forty degrees and windy off the lake regardless of what the forecast promised. Food inside is expensive and mediocre — eat before or walk to the south loop. Buy exclusives Friday morning or accept you will not get them. And the smaller press tables at the back of artist alley are where the finds are.
It belongs here because a healthy convention in the middle of the country is a real indicator about where fandom lives, and it is not only on the coasts. C2E2 2027 runs April 30 – May 2, 2027 at McCormick Place.

Before anime was something you could explain at work, a few thousand people started meeting once a year in a suburb next to O'Hare airport to watch subtitled tapes and argue about them. Three decades on, Anime Central is the largest anime convention in the Midwest, still in Rosemont, still fundamentally shaped by having been built by fans rather than by a company.
The thing that makes it distinctive is the hotel geography. The convention center connects by covered walkway to several large hotels, and because Rosemont is a small municipality that exists mostly to serve the airport, the convention effectively takes over the entire area for a weekend. That produces the phenomenon regulars talk about most: the con does not close. Room parties, hallway gatherings, impromptu dance circles, people in costume getting food at two in the morning at the same handful of restaurants. The formal programming is strong — a large dealers hall, a serious artist alley, concerts, a masquerade that people train for — but the actual memory people carry out is of the hours between the scheduled things.
Worth it? If you want a large anime convention with a genuine all-night social culture, this is one of the best in the country and the walkway layout is a real structural advantage over conventions where you have to cross a city at midnight. If you want polished, corporate-run programming and major industry announcements, the coastal shows are bigger. ACen is scrappier and warmer.
What to know before you go: book a connected hotel the moment rooms open, because being on the walkway versus off it changes the entire weekend. Rosemont has its own train stop on the blue line, so you can fly in and never rent a car. May in Chicago is unpredictable and the walkways mean you may never need a coat. Bring cash for artist alley. And the panel rooms fill fast for anything popular, so queue rather than wander.
It is on this list because a thirty-year-old fan-built institution that still runs on its own social energy is a genuinely interesting thing to know exists, whether or not you ever fly to Illinois for it. Anime Central 2027 runs May 14–16, 2027 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

The largest fan convention in the southeastern United States happens in a city already built entirely around manufactured wonder, which could have made it redundant and instead makes it a useful contrast — this is the weekend when Orlando's fantasy is assembled by the people attending rather than sold to them. MEGACON has grown into a four-day event at the Orange County Convention Center drawing well over a hundred thousand people.
What it is, practically, is enormous and unusually broad. Comics, anime, gaming, horror, science fiction and a large celebrity guest roster all sit under one roof, and the show has leaned hard into fan-built spectacle: costume contests with real production value, a substantial number of large-scale prop and vehicle builds, and an artist alley that has become one of the bigger ones in the country. Because Florida draws attendees from across the Southeast and the Caribbean, the crowd composition is different from the coastal shows — younger on average, more family groups, and noticeably more first-timers, which gives the floor an enthusiasm that jaded convention veterans find slightly startling.
Worth it? If you live anywhere in the Southeast, this is the show, and the guest list alone usually justifies it. If you are traveling from far away specifically for it, the honest answer is that the convention is excellent but the surrounding city will absorb your budget fast, so plan for that deliberately rather than accidentally. It is not the show for deep comics scholarship; it is the show for scale, spectacle and meeting people whose work you know from a screen.
What to know: the Orange County Convention Center is vast and the two buildings are a real walk apart, so check your hall. Autograph and photo op tickets sell separately and the popular ones go early. Florida in May is hot and the walk from parking is unshaded. Bring water; there are refill stations. And the Thursday preview day is significantly calmer if your badge covers it.
It sits on this list because a hundred thousand people building their own spectacle in the shadow of the world's most engineered one is a genuinely interesting thing to know is happening. MEGACON Orlando 2027 runs May 20–23, 2027 at the Orange County Convention Center.

Ontario Convention Center, Ontario…
Somewhere in the artist alley there is a table with your favorite book on it, and the person who drew it is sitting behind it, waiting for someone to say the right thing. That is the whole reason to go. The Inland Empire's comic weekend stays small enough that you can actually reach that table — no wristband lottery, no line that eats your morning, no security walking the queue with a clipboard. Panels run all day for the people who want to hear how the work actually gets made. The exclusive merchandise moves early, which the regulars know, which is why they walk the floor before they do anything else. Pop culture at large is here too, but comics are still the spine of it. Ontario Convention Center, in Ontario. Bring the friend who has been quietly drawing in the margins since middle school and has never shown anyone.

A convention that started as a one-day free event on a college campus and grew into a four-day gathering of tens of thousands keeps something from that origin that money cannot buy: it is still noticeably run by people who are the audience. MomoCon happens each Memorial Day weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, and it covers anime, gaming, animation and comics with an unusually strong emphasis on the industry side of animation.
The distinguishing feature is the volume of actual working professionals — animators, voice actors, studio staff — doing panels that are about how the work gets made rather than about promoting a release. Atlanta has become a genuine production city, and the convention benefits from that proximity. Alongside it sits one of the larger convention gaming setups in the country: a tabletop hall, a big freeplay arcade and console area, and esports tournaments running the whole weekend. Cosplay is central and the crowd skews young, energetic and heavily costumed. Memorial Day weekend means an extra day, and the extra day changes the pace considerably — there is time to do things properly rather than sprinting.
Worth it? If you are interested in animation as a craft and a career, this is one of the best conventions in the country for that specific reason, and the access to working professionals is unusually good. If you are primarily a collector, the dealer hall is solid but not a destination. It is a maker's and a player's convention more than a buyer's.
What to know: downtown Atlanta hotels connected to or near the convention center fill first and the walk matters in May humidity. The badge covers the gaming halls, which many first-timers do not realize until Sunday. Panels about breaking into animation fill up an hour early. Parking downtown is expensive; the MARTA station is close. And the four-day format means Thursday is genuinely worth arriving for.
It is here because a convention where the people who make the thing talk honestly about making it is rarer than it should be, and knowing that room exists is useful whether or not you ever sit in it. MomoCon 2027 runs May 27–30, 2027 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Riverside Convention Center, 3637 …
An hour to Los Angeles for the big convention, an hour back at one in the morning — that is what being an anime fan out here has always meant. This is the year that stopped. There is a real pride in a room full of people from Riverside, San Bernardino, Temecula and Redlands who finally did not have to leave home to find each other. It is the whole format at a scale you can actually walk: panels, an exhibit hall, artist alley, gaming rooms, and a cosplay contest judged by a crowd that recognizes the characters without being told. No airport-terminal sprawl. That trade was made on purpose — less distance between you and the thing you came for. The convention takes over the Riverside Convention Center downtown, with dates confirming at animeriverside.com. Bring the friends who made that drive with you one too many times.
