The California Honeydrops
In 3 days · Nov 8 – Nov 9 Pappy & Harriet's, 53688 Pioneerto…

Busking in an Oakland subway station taught this group to read a crowd directly, and a decade later they still play that way — walking out into the floor, no setlist, taking requests — with a live reputation that has long outrun the recordings. The music is New Orleans second-line, Bay Area soul and old-time blues, and the frontman plays trumpet and guitar and talks to the room constantly. Nobody stands still. A high desert saloon on a Sunday night, with the doors open and the patio full, is the right shape for a band that treats the audience as the venue. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown, out past Yucca Valley. Bands built entirely on the live room create the kind of audience that brings somebody who has never heard of them, every single time.

The California Honeydrops - Sweet Like That Tour 2026
In 5 days · Nov 10 Ventura Music Hall, 1888 E Thompso…

A band with no setlist and a habit of walking off the stage into the middle of the floor works better in some rooms than others, and a flat-floor converted bowling alley is close to ideal — there is nowhere for the audience to hide. The music is second-line brass, Bay Area soul and old blues played by people who started out busking and never lost the instinct for reading a crowd directly. Requests get taken. Nobody stands still for long. A Tuesday night in Ventura means a smaller and more local room than the weekend dates on this run. Music at 8:00 PM on East Thompson Boulevard. Weeknight shows by bands this participatory are the ones people talk about at work the next day and cannot adequately explain.

Two things happen in Southern California at the start of November, and for a very specific kind of person they have always quietly been the same thing. One is a weekend of altars and marigolds and families visiting their dead. The other is a band from Sacramento whose records have soundtracked grief for three decades for a largely Mexican-American audience that was never really acknowledged as its core. Putting them together is not a marketing idea. It is a recognition of something that was already true, and the fact that this is an unofficial satellite show rather than the official thing is exactly why it will be the better room. Nobody is there by accident. Everybody has the same two reference points and does not need either explained. If you are the person who has spent years mildly annoyed that nobody writes about this overlap, this is the night, and you already know precisely which friend to send it to.

Live vocals over house music is a high-risk arrangement because a weak singer is instantly obvious and a strong one makes the DJ redundant. This duo solved it by being related: one produces, one sings, and the gospel training in the voice gives the records a lift that a sampled vocal cannot fake. What that produces live is closer to a performance than a set, with actual dynamics and an actual ending. The room is small and the start is late, so the first hour is the warm-up nobody should skip. Worth it specifically if you have been listening to a lot of instrumental dance music lately and have started to miss a human being being audible in it. Sibling acts also carry something a hired vocalist never can, which is thirty years of knowing exactly when to get out of each other's way.

Nov 21, 2026 Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 …

Your grandmother's recipe is not written down anywhere and you have been meaning to learn it for about nine years now. That is the ache this one presses on. California is the only state that put kimchi on its official calendar, and the festival that grew out of that law is not a trade show, it is a few hours in a botanic garden in Arcadia where people make, taste, argue about and hand down a fermented cabbage carrying an entire diaspora's memory inside it. Ten in the morning until two in the afternoon, which makes it a daytime thing you can bring a parent to, and you should bring a parent to it. The setting does real work: the Arboretum's lawns mean this happens under trees rather than fluorescent lights, and the smell travels. Two crowds arrive and discover they overlap, Korean families treating it as a homecoming and SoCal food people who will drive anywhere for something made properly. Arrive hungry. Ask somebody older than you how they do it.

Today · Nov 5 $10 The Banshee Bar, 3519 El Cajon Blv…

A ten dollar cover on a Thursday is the cheapest test there is of whether you actually like something or just like the idea of it. Deathrock lives or dies in rooms this size, a dive on El Cajon Boulevard where the stage is barely a stage and the band is close enough that you can watch the bass player decide what to do next. New Skeletal Faces have been working this particular vein of Southern California darkness long enough that the crowd skews two ways at once: people who saw them the first time around, and people who found them through a playlist and have been waiting ever since. Music starts late, which is the whole point, because nothing about this is designed for someone who has to be up early. The Banshee is a proper bar rather than a club pretending to be one, so you can still hear a conversation between songs. Thursday is when the scene belongs to itself, before the weekend crowd arrives and thins it out.

The entire point of running on Thanksgiving morning is the permission it buys. Nobody sets a personal record at 7:15am wearing a turkey hat. What happens instead is that three generations stand around in the cold at 4S Ranch, the grandmother walks the 5K, the kids run their own one-kilometer loop at 8:45 with numbers pinned crookedly to their shirts, and everyone drives home having earned a plate they were going to eat regardless. This one is only in its third year, which means it is still small enough that you will recognize the same strangers at the finish line next November - the stage before a race becomes an institution and stops feeling like it belongs to you. Proceeds go to sports scholarships for kids whose families cannot cover registration fees, which is a quietly pointed thing to fund on a morning about abundance. 10K at 7:15, 5K at 7:30, the kids at 8:45. 16118 4S Ranch Parkway.

Three decades of hosting the radio show that told an entire country what dance music was each week buys a particular authority, and it is a different thing from being a great DJ. What you get is a curator with an enormous memory playing records in a room small enough to see the mixer. The sets lean historical without being a nostalgia exercise: things that mattered, in an order that explains why they mattered, played to people who mostly heard them through a radio first. The crowd skews older than the venue's usual and behaves considerably better. Worth it specifically if dance music arrived in your life through a broadcast rather than a club, which for a surprising number of people is exactly how it happened.

Somebody spent four years on the paint. He is standing next to it, and he would genuinely like you to ask. From four in the afternoon until dark, hundreds of vehicles line Grand Avenue and the surrounding blocks fill with families, enthusiasts, and people who drove in from across the county. Owners talk builds with anyone who stops. Spectators walk freely between cars. There is no rope line and nobody is guarding anything. The July show pulls the strongest turnout of the season — flags on hoods, red-and-white-and-blue paintwork, and some of the finest American iron in the county making a point of it. Classic muscle and hot rods dominate, though the full range that makes this thing worth returning to is always somewhere on the street. Grand Ave, downtown Escondido. Free, no registration, no admission. Downtown businesses stay open late; park on the side streets. It is the least intimidating door into car culture in Southern California, and nobody there will make you feel new.

If you grew up in California between 2012 and 2016, there's a good chance The Story So Far was the soundtrack to the drive that changed something. Pop-punk with the self-awareness to know it's pop-punk and the conviction to play it like it matters anyway — the Walnut Creek band that turned suburban restlessness into something a generation moshed to in venues exactly like this one. SOMA's Mainstage is the right room for this. Big enough to hold the energy, small enough that the pit reaches the stage. The Starting Line opens with the kind of elder-emo gravitas that makes the crowd remember there was pop-punk before there was The Story So Far, and Ultra Q fills the gap between nostalgia and whatever comes next. Then TSSF walks on and the room forgets it has a ceiling. This is an all-ages, general admission, standing show. If you know, you know. If you don't, ask the person next to you — they've been waiting for this since the tour was announced. Friday, November 6, 2026 at 8:00 PM. SOMA, 3350 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110. Fairfax is the street that defined California streetwear, and the market that sets up here on alternating Saturdays is dense in a way most vintage markets are not: deadstock, rare denim, band tees that were on somebody's body at the actual show, nineties sportswear, sneakers, accessories. What separates it is the sellers. These are people who know exactly what they have, which means the conversation is half the transaction, and the good pieces do not sit around waiting for you to think about it. Free to walk in, on Fairfax, with the active Saturday schedule posted online. If your style came from anywhere other than a mall, this is your Saturday. Everybody has danced to at least one record by this man without having the faintest idea who made it, which is the standard fate of house producers and a slightly unjust one. The catalogue goes considerably deeper than the single that ended up in every advert, and a set lets him demonstrate that for two hours to a room that mostly came for one song and stays for the rest. There is a generosity to the way long-serving producers play when they are not trying to prove anything: lots of other people's records, no interest in being the cleverest person present, and an unembarrassed willingness to drop the obvious thing at the obvious moment. The floor in that room is small enough that the whole crowd moves as one object. Go expecting the hit, and be quietly annoyed that the tracks either side of it were better.

When two small promoters combine forces on one night it is usually because neither can fill the room alone, and the result is reliably better than either doing it separately. Two mailing lists, two sets of regulars, one floor, and a bill assembled by people with something to prove. The music is garage and two-step, which is having a quiet revival among people far too young to remember it the first time. Setting is a dive club, which is the correct container: low ceiling, no production budget, nothing to look at but each other. Starts earlier than a club night and runs late anyway. Go if your idea of a good night out involves a room you could not have found by searching for it. Co-hosted nights also tend to book more carefully, because each promoter is playing to the other's regulars as much as to their own.

Concrete floors and very high ceilings ask for a specific kind of record, and that record does not translate to headphones at all. Hard, fast, relentlessly physical, built on the assumption that the venue itself is an instrument. In a space like this it works the way it is supposed to: the kick arrives through your feet before your ears register it and the whole building becomes part of the arrangement. This is the opposite of a connoisseur's night and makes no apology for it. The crowd is large, young and there to be flattened, and the fact that it starts in the late afternoon rather than at midnight tells you it is built for endurance rather than mystery. Not subtle. Occasionally that is precisely the correct order.

Dance music in daylight is a completely different proposition and most people only discover this by accident. Without the dark doing the work, the music has to actually be good, the crowd cannot hide, and everybody ends up considerably friendlier than they would be at two in the morning. Add a hillside in Malibu and rows of vines and you have an event that bears almost no relation to a club night despite the same records being played. It starts at midday and ends while it is still light, which sounds modest and is in fact the luxury: you get the whole thing and still have an evening. Expect sunburn, expect to talk to strangers, and expect at least one person to say they had forgotten this was allowed. Take somebody who insists they have aged out of this kind of thing.

Everything else — the manufactured snow, the holiday shows, the hot cocoa, the thousands of twinkling lights draped over rides designed for people under four feet tall — is the infrastructure that delivers it. LEGOLAND Holidays runs on select days from late November through early January, and it earns its repeat visitors not through spectacle but through specificity. LEGO artists spend weeks constructing holiday scenes that stop adults in their tracks — builds so detailed that grown engineers count bricks while their kids have already moved on to the next one. Bedroom recordings got popular enough to become a genre, which very nearly ruined the thing that made them matter in the first place. The appeal was never the lo-fi texture. It was the sense that you were hearing something not meant for an audience, recorded by somebody who assumed nobody would ever ask. Hold onto that and the live version becomes strange and good: a few hundred people in a room, all of whom first heard these songs alone and privately, singing them at each other. The crowd skews young and knows every word, and there is an intensity to that which catches older people off guard. It is not a polite indie show. Expect the sad ones to be the loudest. A small east-side room is exactly the right scale for it, and in a few years the people there will be insufferable about having seen it in a place this size, which is its own kind of recommendation.

The saxophone starts at quarter to six and nobody checks their phone until the set is over. Not because anyone asked them to stop — because somewhere between the first note and the appetizer arriving, they forgot to look. Madison on Park runs live jazz every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening with John Reynolds and a rotating cast of Southern California's finest. The music comes through a real sound system in a real room with Mediterranean food on the table and craft cocktails at the bar, and it turns a weeknight dinner into the kind of evening people describe the next morning as one you should have been at. The sets run 5:45 to 8 PM, which means you can sit down after work and leave before the night gets away from you, or you can stay and let it. The crowd is regulars and first-timers in roughly equal measure, which is the mark of a room that has figured out what it is. Seven years of programming, three nights a week, no cover charge — just the kind of evening that reminds you why you moved to San Diego in the first place. Naming a club night something as plain as this is either a failure of imagination or total confidence, and in a converted space on East 16th Street it reads as the latter. Downtown warehouse venues have a specific quality that purpose-built clubs cannot buy: bad sightlines, concrete, a sound system installed by people who cared more about the low end than the room. What gets played is big-room and unsubtle and completely appropriate to the setting. The crowd skews young and arrives late. Most club nights are built around a handoff — somebody plays an hour, the room resets, you start reading the crowd again from scratch. The reason people drive in for this one is that it refuses to do that. One crew, one booth, the whole night, which means hour four is allowed to sound nothing like hour one and still belong to the same evening. Desert Hearts came out of the California desert as a campout where the dancefloor never stopped, and the thing that followed them indoors is not a sound so much as a set of manners: people introduce themselves, nobody films the drop, the front rail is not a status object. Bringing Justin Martin in for an all-night format is the tell that this is aimed at the people who already know how it goes rather than at a lineup poster. Anyone who has done a sunrise in Los Coyotes will recognise the pacing immediately. Ten at night, Hollywood Boulevard, and it goes as long as it goes. Somewhere in the desert there is a version of this with no roof on it.

This one reads like a reunion for everybody who grew up wearing black in the California sun — the kids who found Bad Religion in a borrowed van, who got Morrissey off an older sibling's cassette, who fell into the Smashing Pumpkins during a summer that rearranged them. Morrissey and the Pumpkins headline, but the undercard is where the real reunions happen: Simple Minds, Bad Religion, Adam Ant, The Psychedelic Furs, Soft Cell, The Damned, Gary Numan, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks, Marky Ramone — over thirty-five artists across three oceanfront stages, the entire width of post-punk, darkwave, goth, new wave, and hardcore punk in a single day, treated correctly as one family that has always been in conversation. That is roughly the moment this stops being a trail marathon and becomes a story you will be telling for years. The route runs point to point across the interior, Two Harbors to Avalon, 26.2 miles of technical trail with serious climbing, through the bison range and the highlands and finally down into the harbor for the finish. These are trails otherwise open only to hikers. The island's ecology was shaped by thousands of years of isolation from the mainland, and running through it does not feel like anywhere on the mainland either. You drew the thing. It sat in a sketchbook for two years because there was no table in Southern California that wanted it. That is the gap this fills — a market built entirely around self-published work, where the comic somebody finished at two in the morning gets a spot on the same table as everyone else's. Doujin culture has run on that logic in Japan for decades: you do not wait for a publisher, you print fifty copies and you go find your people. The tables here carry original comics, manga and novels alongside prints, acrylics, apparel and stickers. The tell that this is a scene and not a trade show is who runs it — the Neo Anime Club out of Cal Poly Pomona, which is why the San Gabriel Valley crowd already knew before any listing did. Entry is a ten-dollar bundle bought at the cafe counter: a drink, a tote, a keychain. Bring cash for the tables. That culture collision is genuinely the fun of this era, and it only really lands in person. The Bruins get a heavyweight conference test out of it. Anaheim Ducks vs. New York Islanders
In 9 days · Nov 14 Honda Center, 2695 E Katella Ave, …

There is one night a week when a hockey arena is at full volume from the anthem onward, and it is this one. Saturday brings the casual crowd, the kids, the groups of twelve in matching jerseys, and the building sounds completely different than it does on a Tuesday — less expert, much louder, considerably more fun if you came for the atmosphere rather than the systems. The Islanders are in town, and their support is a particular curiosity in Southern California: transplanted Long Islanders who have been here twenty years and still say the name like a hometown. Expect a pocket of them somewhere in the upper bowl doing a chant nobody around them recognizes. The Islanders play a defensive structure that frustrates teams far better than their record suggests, so the game itself rarely matches the mood of the room, which is part of the charm. Seven o'clock on Saturday the fourteenth at Honda Center, and the lots off Katella fill early on a weekend, so leave margin.

The second night of a two-date run is the one the artist enjoys more, because the first one taught them something and nobody has to be careful any more. Here that lands in a dive club rather than a proper venue, which changes the proposition entirely: low ceiling, no production, a floor small enough that the booth is part of the crowd. Melodic house in a space that size stops being cinematic and becomes physical. Late start on a Friday, and the kind of room where staying until it closes is the default rather than a decision. Go to this one rather than the bigger version if you have a choice, which almost nobody realises they do. Two-date runs in one region are also how a producer finds out which California they actually play better to, and the smaller room usually wins.

Somebody from this city invented a whole genre by refusing to pick between two things he was, and then named it himself. Cholo goth is not a joke or a marketing line - it is darkwave synths and Chicano Southern California in the same song, made by someone who grew up in both and would not file either one away to make the other legible. Live it is heavier than the records and the crowd is the real event: black clothes and gold chains, people who found a band that finally sounded like their actual life. There is nowhere else in the country where this room assembles this easily. Doors at eight, on at eight thirty, thirty dollars, 1337 India Street, San Diego. Friday night. The set runs loud enough that the bass sits in your sternum, and nobody there treats that as a complaint. Send this to the one person you know who has been waiting for permission to like both halves of themselves at once.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Calgary Flames
In 10 days · Nov 15 Honda Center, 2695 E Katella Ave, …

The second half of a hockey weekend has a texture the first half does not. Everybody in the building was somewhere else last night, the players are on the back end of consecutive games, and the whole thing runs slightly tired and slightly loose — which produces either a sloppy game or a wildly entertaining one, and rarely anything between. Calgary is the visitor, and the Flames travel with the kind of support that treats a November road trip to Southern California as a holiday: expect sunburn and replica jerseys in equal measure, bought for weather that does not exist in Alberta. The five o'clock start is kind to anyone who has to function on Monday. Calgary and Anaheim have also met in the playoffs often enough that the older fans in both sections carry specific grudges, which surfaces around the second period whether the standings justify it or not. Honda Center, Sunday the fifteenth, with the puck down at five and the 57 manageable in both directions on a weekend evening.

Playing two California dates on consecutive nights means the band gets two crowds who think they have the same relationship with the records and do not. The LA room skews slightly older and considerably more self-conscious; the songs survive both. What they are is unusually well-built guitar music disguised as something scrappier, hooks that reveal themselves on the fourth listen rather than the first, and lyrics that avoid the self-pity the genre is accused of by being specific instead. An early Sunday start, which the audience will quietly appreciate more than they admit. Go if you have been meaning to and kept not going; this is the one where you stop meaning to. The support slots are worth arriving for and almost nobody does, which is the standing tragedy of a 6:30 door time on a Sunday.

An hour before dawn out in the desert, the air goes completely dead still and the light has not yet decided what color it intends to be. That is the hour hundreds of balloons choose to leave the ground together. The mass ascension is the entire event. Every burner on the field firing at once, color swelling up out of the dark, then the slow collective lift until all of them are airborne over the valley floor at the same moment. Nothing else in Southern California does that to a person. The part nobody expects to be the highlight is the glow. On the evening sessions the balloons light from the inside against a black desert sky — tethered, breathing — and people who came for the morning end up talking about the night instead. November out here sits in the exact temperature band where standing outside at dawn is a reward rather than a hardship. Wake somebody up for this. They will forgive you by the second balloon.

Descanso: Enchanted Forest of Light 2026-2027

Descanso Gardens transforms into a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience each winter season with Enchanted: Forest of Light, running from late November through early January. The 150-acre botanical garden in La Canada Flintridge becomes a glowing landscape of illuminated art installations, light tunnels, reflective pools, and custom soundscapes designed to guide visitors through the garden after dark. Each section of the garden tells its own visual story. The California Sycamore Grove, the Rose Garden, the Oak Forest, and the Japanese Garden all receive distinct light treatments that make familiar daytime spaces completely unrecognizable at night. Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive in La Canada Flintridge, about 15 minutes north of Pasadena via the 210 Freeway. Parking is available on-site. Timed entry tickets are required and sell out quickly — book well in advance at descansogardens.org. Children under 3 are free. The experience takes approximately 90 minutes to walk. Dress in layers as November and December evenings in the San Gabriel Mountains can be cold. Bring a jacket, wear comfortable shoes, and plan to arrive 10 minutes before your timed entry slot.

Opening nights at a new venue are worth attending for reasons that have nothing to do with the lineup. Nothing has settled yet: the sound is being learned in real time, the staff do not know the room, and the crowd has no established way of behaving in it. That uncertainty produces an atmosphere a mature venue cannot manufacture. Booking a genuinely well-known name for it is a statement of intent about what the space means to be. The music is moody, vocal-led, built on a sound that was everywhere a decade ago and has aged better than its imitators. Electronics Place is an unglamorous address for an ambitious room. Go early and look at the space before it fills, because this is the only night it will ever be new.

Old Town Temecula hosts its monthly vintage and makers market along Front Street -- local dealers bringing curated vintage clothing, jewelry, ceramics, plants, and handmade goods to the brick-lined blocks that are already one of the better walking streets in Inland Southern California. Each edition opens in the morning and runs through the afternoon. The wine country crowd mixes with the vintage hunters; the combination makes for a morning that reliably turns into an afternoon. Front Street in Old Town Temecula is a genuine discovery walk even before the market sets up -- historic storefronts, wine tasting rooms, and local restaurants make it easy to turn a market visit into a full day. Admission is free to browse. Bring cash for the dealers who do not run Square -- vintage markets at this scale typically have a mix of card and cash-only vendors. The market is located at 28690 Front Street, Temecula, CA 92590. Parking is available along Front Street and in surrounding lots. Old Town is also walkable from several downtown Temecula hotels.

Some people mark December by the first cold morning. A surprising number of Southern Californians mark it by the day the garlands go up on Main Street, and they are not embarrassed about it. The park changes more than the decorations suggest: Haunted Mansion is taken over entirely by Jack Skellington and stays that way for two months, it's a small world disappears under a facade of lights that has to be seen from the hub to make sense, and the nighttime show over the castle becomes something that makes adults who came for the rides go quiet. Santa holds court through Christmas Eve. Over in the other park, World of Color turns into Season of Light, which is the single best argument for staying until the end of the night rather than beating the parking structure. November 13 through January 6, 1313 Disneyland Drive in Anaheim. The locals go on a weeknight in early December and they are right to.

The closest thing this team has to a neighbour it refuses to take seriously is up the valley in Sacramento, and that dismissiveness has never once been reciprocated. Northern California arrives carrying a grievance that is entirely one-directional, which is a genuinely funny dynamic to sit inside: one half of the building treating it as another Friday, the other half treating it as the night they have been waiting for. Tournament group games sharpen that further, since the arithmetic is public and everybody can do it. A Friday tip means downtown is at its loudest beforehand and the whole area stays open long after the final buzzer. Take the side you do not normally take and see how differently the evening reads from there. Arrive in time for the warmup, which on a tournament night is the one chance to see the painted floor empty and properly lit before twenty thousand people fill the seats around it. It is a genuinely odd sight and it only exists a handful of nights a year.

Included with regular admission, it runs on select nights from November 27, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Early-2000s R&B occupies a specific and under-discussed place in Mexican-American Southern California: it was the soundtrack to a generation of quinceaneras, lowrider shows and first heartbreaks, and the artists who made it have an audience here far larger and more loyal than anywhere else in the country. A co-headline bill of two of those voices is not a nostalgia package to the people buying tickets. It is closer to a homecoming. Expect couples who met to these songs, mothers and daughters attending together, and a room that sings the slow ones louder than the uptempo ones. This is the return leg, and in a rivalry built entirely on a stretch of freeway the return leg matters more than the first one. The Freeway Face-Off splits Southern California households rather than cities, and the Saturday version downtown draws the Orange County contingent north in numbers that turn a home game into something closer to a split building. Thanksgiving weekend helps: nobody is working, the 5 is survivable for once, and a six o'clock start means the whole thing is done in time for whatever the family still expects of you. Crypto.com Arena is also the louder of the two buildings when it is full, and this is one of the handful of nights a year it genuinely is. These two also play the night before down in Anaheim, so whoever lost on Friday arrives with something to prove and the tone is set before anyone drops a glove. Everybody you know is at the airport. The 5 is a parking lot in both directions, half the county has agreed to spend the night before Thanksgiving in transit, and the holiday has not even started yet. The people who instead drive to Katella Avenue have made a quietly excellent decision: the roads around Honda Center are emptier than any other November night, and the building takes on the loose, unhurried feeling of a room where nobody has anywhere to be in the morning. San Jose is the opponent, which still carries a real edge for anyone who remembers the 2009 playoff series, even though almost nobody on either roster was in the league for it. California hockey grudges are stranger and more durable than outsiders assume. Bring the friend who swears the puck is impossible to follow: a 7:00 faceoff on a half-emptied holiday eve is the easiest first game there is, because you can actually track the play and hear the hits land. Honda Center, Anaheim, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Reading alone is fine until you finish something enormous and realise there is nobody in your life you can say the last page to. That is the hole this fills, on the fourth Wednesday of every month, upstairs, for an hour, for free. No application, no reading list you have to have kept up with, no requirement beyond having read the book or being willing to sit there while people who did talk about it. October's is Lincoln in the Bardo, which is George Saunders at his strangest - a graveyard, a grieving president, a hundred and sixty-six narrators interrupting each other - and it is precisely the kind of book that works better out loud with other people than it does alone in a chair. The group skews across four decades of age, which is unusual and is the best thing about it; the retired teacher and the twenty-four-year-old disagree about the same paragraph and both turn out to be right. It is one hour. It meets whether or not you came last month. Second floor of the oldest bookstore in Southern California, every fourth Wednesday, indefinitely.
