Los Angeles isn't one city — it's forty neighborhoods that happen to share a freeway. Nobody 'does LA.' You pick a corner of it and go deep: the taco truck that only makes sense at midnight, the canyon trail that empties the whole city out below you, the market downtown where you eat your way around the world in one lunch. It rewards the specific and punishes the checklist. Don't try to see it all. Find your neighborhood and let it be yours for the day.

A day in Los Angeles

Nobody does all of LA in a day — but you can do one good arc across it. Here's a local's route, morning to close, with the address for each.

Morning Start high and early, before the heat and the traffic wake up.
Runyon Canyon
Runyon Canyon

This is about Runyon. Early, right now, before the sun turns the trail to an oven, half of Hollywood is already up there sweating out the week — and ten minutes up the fire road the whole basin cracks open beneath them: the endless grid, the haze going gold, a city so big it stops being a place and turns into a feeling. That's the payoff, and it only exists in the first cool hour. Those are your people, the ones already climbing. Every one of them had a reason to stay in bed. They came anyway, and they're the ones at the top with the whole city at their feet. You don't need Runyon for exercise. You need it for the ten minutes where LA makes sense. The trail's identical next week — that's not the variable. The variable is whether you're on it, or still telling yourself you'll go some morning. Some morning is this morning. Get up. Beat the sun. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Hike the 2.6-mile loop to the Clouds Rest overlook
  • The big off-leash dog run
  • Fuller stairs past the old Errol Flynn estate ruins
  • Hollywood Blvd shops, five minutes downhill
  • Coffee along Hollywood and La Brea after
Hike to the Hollywood Sign
Hike to the Hollywood Sign

This is about the hike up to the Sign. You've looked at those nine white letters your whole life — on postcards, in the opening shot of a hundred movies, through a car window on the 101 — and never once stood underneath them. That's the strange little gap I want to close this morning. Go early, up Canyon Drive before the heat and the crowd: four miles of fire road switchbacking up the back of Griffith, and near the top the whole basin drops away behind you and the Sign stops being a logo and turns into a fifty-foot thing you could almost reach out and touch. Your people up there are the early ones — the few who wanted it without the mob, sweating out the climb instead of shooting it with a long lens from a parking lot. The cost is one early alarm and a bottle of water. By ten it's a slow parade of selfie sticks. Go stand under the most famous sign on earth before the city wakes up and remembers it's there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Mt. Lee summit — the ridge directly behind the letters
  • Bronson Caves (the 'Batcave'), a short spur off the trail
  • Griffith Observatory & planetarium, a short drive
  • The LA Zoo and the Autry Museum, both in Griffith Park
  • Los Feliz Village after: the Vista Theatre, taco spots
The Getty Center
The Getty Center

This is about the Getty. You've decided art isn't your thing, so let me take the art off the table entirely. Go for the tram that lifts you up out of the traffic until the whole city drops away. Go for the pale travertine and the gardens that don't seem to belong to LA at all and the view of the entire basin from the top of the hill. Go because it's free — you only ever pay to park — and because you come back down every single time feeling like a slightly better-made version of yourself, and you didn't look at one painting to get there. Your people up there aren't art people; they wanted a few hours that felt bigger than their week and found the cheapest way in the city to buy it. The Getty is the rare place that works on the people who think it's not for them. Doors open, tram running, right now. Go feel like the better version for an afternoon. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the free tram up the hillside
  • Robert Irwin's Central Garden maze
  • Van Gogh's 'Irises' in the galleries
  • Picnic the lawns over the 405
  • The Skirball Cultural Center, ten minutes away
Afternoon Come down the hill — eat, wander, and end up at the water.
Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market

This is about Grand Central Market. Right now, under one roof downtown, a hundred years of the city is eating lunch — neon buzzing, steam off a dozen counters, a line at the taco stall and the egg sandwich place and the one you've never heard of that's probably the best. All of LA pressed into one loud, glorious room. The thing you'll eat near home instead, you've already forgotten — that's the honest comparison. Not closer versus farther. Forgettable versus a meal you'll actually tell someone about. Your people there understood lunch can be an event if you drive twenty minutes for it, and they never skip the longest line, because the longest line is usually the point. It's been happening for a century and a parking garage is the whole cost of admission. Skip the sad desk lunch. Drive down and eat your way around the world. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and a century of food stalls
  • Ride the Angels Flight funicular across the street
  • The Bradbury Building's iron atrium next door
  • The Last Bookstore, two blocks south
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall, an 8-minute walk
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is about the Walk of Fame — and yeah, it's a trap. Grimy, tacky, wall-to-wall tourists, and you should still do it once, on purpose, eyes open. Stand on the boulevard fifteen minutes and feel it: every dreamer who ever stepped off a Greyhound onto that sidewalk, dead certain this was the street where it finally happens for them. The whole city runs on that particular delusion and you've never once stood in the middle of it. Your people here, weirdly, are everyone — the whole busload of believers. You go once so you've touched the myth, then get on with the real LA and never go back. It costs fifteen minutes and a little of your dignity. Skipping it forever isn't taste — it's avoidance dressed up as taste. Duck into the TCL courtyard for the handprints while you're there. Go get it out of your system, today, not someday. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Match the handprints in the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt
  • Catch an IMAX premiere at TCL
  • The Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars
  • Madame Tussauds wax figures next door
  • Shop and eat at the Ovation Hollywood complex
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier

This is about the Pier. It's crowded, a little cheap, and you're already halfway to talking yourself out of it — which means you're about to be too cool for the exact thing you came to California for. Right now the Ferris wheel is turning against the Pacific and the whole coast is going amber, the end of Route 66 and the edge of the continent in the same gust of salt air. That's not beneath you. That is a day at the LA beach. Your people out there are the ones who let themselves have it — rode the cheesy wheel, ate the bad churro, stood at the rail as the light went. Ride it, then rent a bike and head south to Venice where the real day keeps going. You can spend the evening being above it all, or you can spend it in it — and only one of those has an ocean in it. The light's going right now. Go get on the wheel. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the solar Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park
  • The official Route 66 'End of the Trail' sign
  • Midway games and the West Coaster
  • Rent bikes on the Marvin Braude beach path
  • Third Street Promenade shops, ten minutes up
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Venice Beach Boardwalk

This is about the Venice Boardwalk. You've heard it's dirty and weird and a little unhinged, and you're using all three as reasons to stay away — when they're the whole reason to go. Two miles of oceanfront concrete where nothing's curated and nobody's performing for a brand: a guy playing electric guitar on roller skates, bodybuilders grunting at the original Muscle Beach, kids dropping into the skate bowl, fortune tellers, murals painted over every week, incense and funnel cake and the Pacific throwing itself at the sand fifty feet away. It's the last stretch of Los Angeles nobody ever polished or sponsored or turned into content. Your people down there are the ones who came to watch the whole human parade and let it be strange around them, instead of deciding they were above it. It's free — it's always been free — and the only cost is parking and a little of your composure. Rent a beach cruiser and ride the entire two miles of glorious chaos. Go see the city with its makeup off. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The original Muscle Beach outdoor gym
  • Venice Skate Park, right on the sand
  • Abbot Kinney shops & restaurants, a few blocks inland
  • The Venice Canals, five minutes south
  • Bike north to the Santa Monica Pier or south to the Marina
Golden hour Get above the city as the light goes — the hour LA saves for its best trick.
Griffith Observatory at dusk
Griffith Observatory at dusk

This is about Griffith at dusk. The traffic up the hill is real, and I won't pretend it isn't — but every person standing on that lawn as the city switches on beneath them fought the exact same traffic, and not one is thinking about it anymore. Because right as the light fails, the whole basin lights up under you — ten thousand streets coming on at once, running gold to the horizon — and it costs nothing but the drive to be there for it. Those are your people: the ones who wanted the view more than they hated the parking crawl for one evening. The view outlasts the traffic by about a decade — a rough half hour in the car for a thing you'll still see with your eyes closed years from now. And it's a dusk thing: a twenty-minute window when it's perfect, then it's just night. Leave now and you catch it right as it turns. Leave now. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Look through the free public Zeiss telescope
  • A planetarium show under the Oschin dome
  • Hike the Mt. Hollywood trail for Sign views
  • A concert at the neighboring Greek Theatre
  • The LA Zoo and Autry Museum, a short drive
1 event coming up here
Dodger Stadium
Dodger Stadium

This is about Dodger Stadium. You're stuck on the ticket and the traffic, so: the upper deck is cheap, and the sunset over Chavez Ravine comes free with every seat in the building. Right now, if they're home, fifty thousand people are on their feet, palms cut black against a pink sky, the roar building in the dark, a Dodger dog in hand — the oldest ritual this city still shows up for. And here's the thing you're actually missing, and it isn't baseball: you don't have to know a single player to want to be inside a crowd that cares about anything that hard. That feeling — fifty thousand people leaning the same way at once — is what you're short on. Not sports. The ticket's on your phone in ninety seconds, the traffic's the tax, and the ravine at sunset is what it buys. A bargain. Go get in the car. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A Dodgers home game in season
  • The 90-minute tour: dugout, press box, trophies
  • The 'Take the Field' batting experience
  • Hike Elysian Park's Academy Road loop nearby
  • Olvera Street and Union Station, minutes away

After dark The city LA becomes when everywhere else has closed — and it's only getting started.
Koreatown after midnight
Koreatown after midnight

This is about Koreatown, right now, this late. You're telling yourself to be responsible and sleep. But sleep is the one thing available to you every single night for the rest of your life — you will never run out of it — so spending a Saturday on it is spending the cheapest thing you own. Meanwhile Ktown is only getting louder: grills hissing behind fogged-up windows, a karaoke room three floors up leaking somebody's whole heart into the street, soju turning a table of strangers into a table of friends, the one stretch of the city that flat refuses to call it a night. Those are your people — the ones who decided the night was worth more than the alarm. It never asks what time you got here. Responsible is just the polite word for the smaller, quieter version of your life. You can have that any night. You can have this for about two more hours. Go be up too late for once. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Prime Korean BBQ at Park's BBQ
  • 24-hour saunas at Wi Spa's jjimjilbang
  • Private-room karaoke at Pharaoh or Shrine
  • Cocktails at The Line Hotel's lobby bar
  • The Art Deco Wiltern on Wilshire
The Sunset Strip
The Sunset Strip

This is about the Sunset Strip. You're picturing clubbing at twenty-two and deciding you're too old — but that's not the ask. This is the one loud mile where every band you ever loved cut its teeth before anyone knew their name: the Whisky, the Roxy, the Rainbow, the Comedy Store, marquees still buzzing over the same sidewalk that's heard it all. Some nights the air itself feels amplified, like the street remembers every set that ever tore the roof off and is daring tonight to top it. Your people there aren't twenty-two — they're everyone who ever stood where it happened and felt it. Go for one drink and one set. You don't have to close the place down. You just have to be on the mile where it all went down, once, and stop pretending it stopped being yours the day you turned thirty. The marquees are lit right now. Go stand under them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A rock show at the Whisky a Go Go
  • Stand-up at The Comedy Store
  • Rock memorabilia at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
  • Live bands at the Roxy Theatre
  • Boutiques and cafes at Sunset Plaza
Al pastor from a truck, after dark
Al pastor from a truck, after dark

This is about the truck. Somewhere out there right now, under a bare bulb, a trompo is turning and a line of locals is twenty deep at midnight — and that truck, no address, no sign, is serving the best food in this entire enormous city. Just tacos is what people say who've never stood at the right one. Your people are in that line, and the line is the review — twenty deep past midnight is a verdict nobody could fake, delivered by people who know. What's waiting at home isn't a shortcut; it's a consolation prize you're about to hand yourself. And here's the honest part: you have to hunt for it. The best thing in LA doesn't come to you, doesn't have a website, doesn't deliver. You find the trompo, you find the line, you get in it. It's out there right now, spinning. Go find it and understand why they're all standing there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Al pastor off the trompo at Leo's Tacos
  • Blue-corn queso tacos at Villa's Tacos
  • Tacos árabes from the Villegas truck
  • Live mariachi at Mariachi Plaza
  • Weekend artisan stalls around the plaza

Nov 10, 2026 $40 Largo at the Coronet, 366 N La Cie…

He was a drummer for a decade before anybody thought of him as funny, and it still shows in the timing. Armisen played in a Chicago post-hardcore band for years, and the muscle he built there is the reason his characters land on the beat rather than near it — watch him do an accent and you are actually watching a percussionist count. Nobody will tell you who else is playing. An "and Friends" bill at this address means the host does some time, then walks people out whose names were printed nowhere, usually working comics who live twenty minutes away and wanted a stage with no cameras pointed at it. There is a decent chance a drum kit appears. The theatre holds under three hundred, close enough to see a performer abandon a bit mid-sentence and go hunting for a better one, and nothing gets recorded, so whatever you get is the only copy. Will call opens at six and doors at seven for an eight o'clock start, Tuesday, November 10. Forty dollars.

Half of this city moved here from somewhere else and never changed allegiance, which is why a Bay Area team playing in Inglewood does not feel like a road game to anybody involved. Scarlet and gold will be everywhere. It will be in your row. It will be the family who drove down from Sacramento and the guy from your office who has lived in Silver Lake for eleven years and still says we about a team four hundred miles north. There is something worth watching in that beyond the football, because it is the clearest available picture of what Los Angeles actually is: a city of people who brought their old loyalties with them and never quite unpacked them. A Thursday in the week before Christmas, streaming rather than network, with the season on the line for at least one of these teams. SoFi Stadium, December 17, 5:15 p.m. Wear your colours. Somebody will want to argue about it, and that is the fun.

Dec 26, 2026 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

December 26 is the flattest day of the year. The presents are open, the good food is gone, three relatives are still in the house, and everybody is being very careful with each other. What the day needs is somewhere loud to drive to. Downtown has the strangest building in American sport for this. The same floor that held a basketball game two nights ago gets flipped overnight, and by seven there is an ice sheet in a city where it was seventy-one degrees at lunch. Hockey in a place with no winter never stops being a slightly absurd proposition, which is exactly why the people who love it here love it so hard. The visiting team is also brand new, which means this is one of the first times that name has ever gone up on this scoreboard. Take the relative you have run out of conversation with. Nobody has to talk at a hockey game. Seven o'clock, 1111 S Figueroa St.

In 5 days · Oct 30 Intuit Dome, 3930 W Century Blvd, …

Some sadness is beautiful enough that it makes you want to stay alive just to keep feeling it, and if you know what that sentence means you already know whether you are going. Phoebe Bridgers brings The Lost Tour to Inglewood for the first of three nights, which is its own landmark for an artist who spent years filling clubs and mid-size theaters and never seemed in any hurry about it. She became the voice of a generation that processes grief by making it beautiful, that recognizes itself in songs about hometowns, funerals, and the specific loneliness that only arrives in a crowded room. Punisher and Stranger in the Alps stopped being albums a while ago. Live, they turn communal: whole-crowd singalongs on I Know the End, crescendos that leave a room genuinely wrung out. Know going in that phones are locked in pouches at entry, which is the best thing anyone has done to a concert in a decade. Take the person you would want beside you for that.

A band that formed while its members were working at Amoeba Records is almost too on the nose for this city, and the music turned out exactly as that origin predicts — sixties garage and jangle filtered through people who had heard absolutely everything and chose this. They have been the house band for a particular Los Angeles self-image for over a decade: beaches, reverb, a slight melancholy under the sunshine. Live they are looser than the records and the sets lean on the deeper cuts more than casual listeners expect. December in Highland Park, upstairs in an old Masonic lodge with wood floors and a balcony, is a good place to hear it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Saturday, first of two nights. Hometown runs at the end of a year draw everybody who has been meaning to go all along.

You were promised a flying car and what arrived was traffic on the 110. Then you stand in front of Luke's actual landspeeder, the real prop, and the ache comes back intact, because somebody built the thing you used to draw in the margins and here it sits close enough to see where the paint got scuffed. George Lucas spent decades assembling a museum for narrative art and opened it in Exposition Park this September with more than thirty installations and over twelve hundred objects, running from ancient gods through Renaissance painting to comics. This is the cinema room: vehicle designs, costumes and illustrations from the first six films, including General Grievous's wheel bike built as a physical object for the first time ever, having only existed as animation until now. Thursday night hockey at Crypto.com Arena as the Kings take on the Minnesota Wild in the second game of LA's December homestand. December hockey in Los Angeles is one of the city's quietest pleasures — the tourist crowds thin out after Thanksgiving, the arena stays cold and loud, and the Kings settle into the rhythm of a long home stretch that rewards the regulars who show up on weeknights when the rest of the city is elsewhere. Minnesota brings a blue-collar road game built on forechecking and neutral-zone discipline, the kind of opponent that makes for a cleaner, faster contest than the divisional grudge matches — fewer scrums, more transition, and a pace that pulls you to the edge of your seat before you realize you are leaning. The DTLA location means you can walk to dinner in any direction after the final horn, and the Thursday-night timing puts you back home before midnight with a story about a game most of your friends did not know was happening. That is the beauty of weeknight hockey in this city: it belongs to the people who were paying attention. Puck drops at 7:00 PM.

Night City was always a place people wanted to go rather than a place people wanted to win. That is the strange thing about that game. The quests were fine, but what hooked everybody was standing on a balcony in the rain with the synths going, feeling genuinely homesick for a city that does not exist and never did. There is no way to visit it. This is the closest anyone has managed. A downtown warehouse is exactly the right architecture for the attempt, because the aesthetic was always industrial before it was futuristic: concrete, bad weather, and far too much neon pointed at it. Six hours, eight until two, in a room off East 16th that is fundamentally a loading bay with a serious sound system in it. The overlap in the crowd is the real event. People who came for the music and people who came because the game mattered to them turn out to be the same people far more often than either group expects, and that recognition tends to arrive about an hour in, to everyone at once. Twenty-one and up, Arts District, ticketed through DICE. Dress for it or defiantly do not.

January 2 asks nothing at all of anybody. The parade has gone by, the bowl game is finished, the resolutions are two days old and not yet broken, and there is an entire Saturday sitting there with nothing whatsoever booked on it. A six o'clock puck drop is the civilised version of a sports evening. You are in your seat before dark, you are back out on Figueroa by half eight, and the night is still in front of you rather than behind. Downtown on the second of January is also quiet enough that parking stops being the argument it usually is on a Saturday. The team that plays here won this league twice in three years not so long ago, which for a franchise that waited forty-five years to win it once is still something people bring up entirely unprompted. Decorations come down this week and the apartment immediately looks worse than it did in November. The tree is out on the curb shedding needles, the lights are in a tangle nobody intends to deal with until next December, and the evenings have gone completely blank again. An ice rink downtown is a strange answer to that and a surprisingly good one. There is something specific about walking in off a warm street into cold air under the lights, with the boards already scuffed up from warmups, that resets a person more thoroughly than it has any right to. The building is loudest in the ten seconds after a goal, and the stranger next to you will grab your shoulder without ever registering that they did it. The Faroe Islands hold about fifty thousand people and produce weather that gets into the music. What arrives on stage is a voice doing two incompatible things at once - old Nordic folk singing, the kind passed down in a language most of the room does not speak, run through electronics that would not be out of place in a club. It should not cohere. It does, and the moment it lands is usually a song with no translation offered, where the crowd stops trying to follow the words and just takes the sound. Expect long held notes, a lot of low end, and a stillness in the room that is unusual for a Saturday. Worth knowing for anyone who has only heard the recordings: live, she sings a good deal of it unaccompanied, and the venue is small enough that you hear the room around the voice. There is no such thing as a Cowboys road game and there never has been. Whatever the standings say in December, that star shows up in numbers no other visiting team manages, carried by people who have never been to Texas and inherited the thing from a grandparent who watched them on national television every Thanksgiving of the 1970s. Expect the building to be genuinely split, expect the away crowd to be loud early, and expect the home end to take it personally, which is exactly the condition under which a late-season afternoon becomes memorable rather than merely attended. This is week fifteen, which in most seasons is when the arithmetic stops being hypothetical and every result starts changing something. December 26th is the flattest day on the calendar. Driving to Sunset for a guitar solo is a cure. Don Dokken and company open a six-night stretch where this club gives each evening to a different band that mattered back when Los Angeles rock was the biggest thing the city exported. This is the loudest, best-attended night of the run and the one where the balcony actually fills up. A detail that changes how you plan the evening: the stairs to the balcony are narrow and the good rail spots along the front go inside the first twenty minutes after doors, so the people who care about sightlines arrive early and eat afterward instead. Saturday the 26th, and the doors go at 7:30 rather than the usual six.

A song you have not chosen to hear in twenty years comes on over a grocery store PA and your whole chest goes sideways. You were maybe twelve when 'When the Children Cry' first got to you. You did not have language yet for what a song could do to a person, and then suddenly you did, and it was that one. Mike Tramp still sings it, still in the same key, which is the quietly astonishing fact underneath this whole evening. This is night four of a six-night run where the Whisky hands each date to a different band that mattered in the eighties, and Tuesday belongs to White Lion. Expect the ballads to land harder than the singles. A thing regulars count on here: the between-song talk runs long and gets genuinely personal, because the room is small enough that it feels less like a concert and more like being told something. Fifty-five seats, no bad ones, close enough that you hear the breath before the note. Musicians fly into LAX and play the same night because the room is five minutes from the airport, so the bill on any given evening might include the touring player who happened to have a day off. Sam First is that rare thing -- a jazz club built for the acoustic intimacy of a New York room, dropped a few minutes from the runway in Inglewood. The booking philosophy is simple and unbending: working jazz musicians playing standards and originals at a level that the city's own working jazz musicians show up to watch. Two sets nightly, Tuesday through Saturday, at seven-thirty and nine-thirty. Wednesday is Hump Day -- reduced cover, same booking, same room. The crowd is the LA jazz community plus whatever visiting players are in town with the night free. Six in the evening outdoors in November is the best hour this city gives away for free. The heat has gone, the light goes orange and then pink behind the hills, and for about forty minutes everybody on a dance floor stops looking at each other and looks west instead. The Swiss pair who are playing build sets for exactly that window: melodic, slow to arrive, patient enough that an hour passes before you have registered it. Booking them on an outdoor stage with a six o'clock door rather than a two in the morning club slot is somebody at the venue understanding the assignment. Frogtown is an industrial strip along the river with no nightlife reason to exist, which is precisely why the warehouses there make good rooms. For the friend who always says they are too old for this and then stays until the end. Six o'clock, 4594 Electronics Place, November 7.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Count the away sweaters. On a Penguins night in this building the number is genuinely startling, and it has nothing to do with anybody here switching allegiance - Los Angeles simply holds an enormous number of people who grew up somewhere colder and never stopped caring about the team their father cared about. A six o'clock Saturday start means the whole thing is finished in time for dinner, which is the civilised way to run a weekend: you get the game and you still get the evening. Pittsburgh supporters are among the few who reliably turn a west-coast road game into something close to a home one, so the room splits properly and the noise goes in both directions on every goal, which is far more fun than a building that only reacts one way. Bring somebody who moved here from back east and watch them locate their own people within about four minutes of walking through the doors. They will not have to ask anybody where to sit.

Nov 22, 2026 SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr, Ing…

Supporting this team in this city is an exercise in being outnumbered at home, and everybody who does it knows it. The bolt has a real and stubborn following here, much of it inherited from seventy years down the coast, and it spends every autumn watching its own stadium fill with somebody else's colours. Sometimes that is funny. Sometimes it stings. Against a team travelling three thousand miles in late November it will at least be quieter than usual, which means a genuine chance to hear your own section for once and to sit among people who chose this on purpose rather than because the algorithm told them it was an event. New York does not send many west this time of year. The lower bowl at SoFi Stadium is closer to the field than the size of the place suggests, and on a low-demand Sunday those seats come down to something reasonable. November 22, a 1:05 kickoff. Go be the loud part of the building for an afternoon.

Dec 12 – Dec 13, 2026 Reframe Studios, 4594 Electronics …

Some dance music is for a Friday and some is for the middle of the night in a room with no clocks. Bedouin have built a decade-long career entirely in the second category. The duo work the slower, Eastern-inflected end of melodic house, sets that unfold rather than arrive, and Saga is their own curated format rather than a booking they turned up for. Reframe is a large indoor industrial room on Electronics Place, which is exactly the right container: no sightlines to speak of, no obvious centre, the whole floor pointed at the sound rather than at a stage. A ten o'clock start two weekends before Christmas is for people who have already decided how they are spending December. Everyone else is at a work party. Electronics Place, ten o'clock, and no curfew worth mentioning.

Office party season has a specific sound, and it is a playlist somebody in operations assembled, played at a volume chosen so that people can network over the top of it. Eleven consecutive days of that will make a person want a room where the music is the actual point and conversation is the thing that has to fight for space. Hollywood keeps one of those behind an unmarked door on Las Palmas. House played properly and at length, no theme night, no photo wall, nothing in the room designed to end up on anybody's feed afterward. Doors at ten and it runs well into the small hours of Saturday morning. The third Friday in December is also the last one before everybody scatters to their parents for a week. Send it to whoever you normally text at eleven asking if anything is happening tonight. From ten on December 18, Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood.

January 2 is the loneliest night on the calendar. The visitors have flown out, the resolutions do not start until Monday, and the city has the specific flatness of a room after everybody leaves a party. Nobody plans anything for January 2. Which is why a Chicago house institution playing a Frogtown warehouse that night reads like somebody doing you a favor. Curtis Jones has been two people since the early nineties: Cajmere, who made Percolator, and Green Velvet, who turns up with the hair and the shout-along records. The second one is built for a floor of people who have quietly decided the holidays were not finished with them. Electronics Place is a real street in a real industrial pocket by the river, and the walk in from parking is part of it. Wear shoes you can stand in for four hours. Reframe Studios Indoors, 4594 Electronics Place, Los Angeles. Saturday, January 2, 10pm.

Tomorrow · Oct 26 Largo at the Coronet, 366 N La Cie…

Monday is the night nothing happens, which is exactly when it is worth watching people work without a net. Somebody in the audience shouts a title for a play that has never existed, and the cast performs a full-length Shakespearean version of it on the spot — five acts, mistaken identities, a death scene, verse invented on the fly by people who have to rhyme their way out of corners they built ninety seconds earlier. The failures are the best part. An actor gets stranded mid-couplet, and you can watch the others silently decide whether to rescue him or let him hang there one beat longer because it is funnier. They almost always let him hang. Mark Flanagan asks you to leave your phone at home or in the car, and he means it, so no clip of the collapse exists. The play was never written down to begin with, which means the thing you sit through will never be performed again, by anyone, in any city. Doors at seven, curtain at eight, Monday the 26th of October. Largo at the Coronet, on La Cienega.

They broke up in 2006 and stayed broken up for the better part of a decade, and for a lot of people that was the end of a specific era of dance music that never quite got replaced. Deep Dish — Sharam and Dubfire, two Iranian-American producers out of Washington DC — won a Grammy, defined progressive house for most of a decade, and then went their separate ways at the exact moment the genre they built started getting called dated. The reunion sets are long and unhurried in a way that current club bookings rarely allow, which is the entire appeal: they came up when a DJ got four hours and used them to actually construct something rather than deliver a highlight reel. Hollywood, Halloween weekend, in a room built around the sound system rather than the sightlines. Ten at night on Friday the thirtieth.
