Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2026 — Los Angeles, CA
Nov 14 – Nov 15, 2026 200 Dodger Stadium, 1000 Vin Scully Av…

Tyler the Creator builds his festival the way he makes his albums — as a complete vision, not a lineup. The 2026 edition runs November 16–17 at Dodger Stadium: Tyler himself, Andre 3000, Erykah Badu, Playboi Carti, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, Daniel Caesar. Sixty thousand people. This is his current read on what matters. Flog Gnaw feels nothing like a conventional music festival. Tyler's aesthetic — Golf Wang colors, surrealist visual direction, Converse collabs, the cartoon universe he's been building since Odd Future — pervades every inch of the grounds. The headliner list reads like Tyler's personal taste index rather than a booking agency's safe plays: Andre 3000's rare public appearances, Earl Sweatshirt's deliberately sparse touring schedule, legacy artists like Erykah Badu alongside younger voices. The surprise guest tradition is genuine — in past years unannounced performers have drawn more conversation than the headliners. The crowd skews young, fashion-conscious, and culturally literate in a way that is self-selecting. Flog Gnaw is the festival where people bring cameras for the fits, not just the performances. This is for people whose music listening doesn't fit a single genre label — who have Tyler the Creator, Badu, Earl, and Daniel Caesar on the same playlist and see nothing contradictory about that. It is for the aesthetically curious. It is not for people who want clear setlist times, grid-pattern stages, and predictable headliner slots. Tyler runs his festival on his own logic, and that's the point. If that energy resonates, Camp Flog Gnaw is one of the few festivals where the curation is unambiguously the product. Two-day passes sell significantly faster than single-day. The Dodger Stadium location is accessible by Metro (Dodger Stadium Express from Union Station — skip the parking). Merchandise drops at Flog Gnaw are serious and sell out quickly; the Golf Wang collabs available only at the festival have become collector items. Arrive early day one — the grounds have carnival rides, food, and art installations that reward exploration before the headliners. Andre 3000's live appearances remain rare enough to justify the trip from anywhere in the country. Tyler the Creator built a world — Golf Wang, Odd Future, Igor, Call Me If You Get Lost, Cherry Bomb — and Flog Gnaw is where that world becomes a place you can stand in for two days. The music industry produces thousands of festivals. Very few of them feel like they could only exist because one specific person willed them into being. Flog Gnaw is one of them. Tickets at Ticketmaster. November 16-17, 2026, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.

One of the only real u-pick pumpkin patches left in Southern California — the kind where you actually walk into the field, pick the one you want off the vine, and carry it back like you earned it. Tanaka Farms runs their fall pumpkin patch and harvest festival from September 20 through November 2, 2026, daily. Thirty acres of working farm transformed into a full-scale fall destination: wagon rides through the pumpkin fields, a corn maze, petting zoo, ATV rides, a pumpkin cannon, and the kind of U-pick experience that reminds you this is farmland, not a parking lot. A Halloween-night football game in the Rose Bowl is the kind of only-in-California autumn ritual the rest of the country doesn't get — costumes in the student section, the San Gabriels going dark behind the rim of the old stadium, and a Bruins squad that treats a non-conference date against Nevada as a chance to put on a show under the lights. This is the friendly, unbuttoned end of the college football schedule: easy tickets, families welcome, the tailgate lots on the golf course lit up like a block party. Saturday, October 31, 2026, Rose Bowl, Pasadena. Come for the mountain sunset over the arroyo, stay for a fun, low-stakes Saturday night of Bruins football, and bring the kid in the costume — this is the most relaxed way to see a game in the most beautiful stadium in the country.

An Evening with Rachel Maddow
Nov 17, 2026 Democracy Center at JANM, 100 N Ce…

Sitting through a conversation about how democracies come apart hits differently inside a building that exists because this one already did it once. The museum on North Central stands a few blocks from where families were ordered to report with only what they could carry. The people who built it were the children on those buses, and they did not build a memorial. They built a civics argument with a roof on it. Maddow comes in to discuss her newest book with Ann Burroughs, the museum's president, and the pairing is the entire point: a broadcaster who traces how institutions fail, across from someone who was a political prisoner under apartheid before she ran an American museum. Neither of them is likely to be careful with the hour. Worth knowing: the Pavilion is closed for renovation, so the evening happens inside the Democracy Center, which seats far fewer people than the name suggests. Tuesday, November 17, 7pm, 100 N Central Ave.

Medium Build — The King of Having Fun Tour at Observatory North Park

You know that feeling when the whole room is moving and nobody rehearsed it — when the bass line picks up and two hundred strangers decide at exactly the same moment that tonight is the night they stop being careful. Medium Build makes music for that moment. Nick Carpenter built this project in a garage in Boise and turned it into something that fills rooms coast to coast with people who never heard the word 'indie-folk' and don't care. The live show is a sweaty, theatrical, grinning mess — brass instruments nobody expected, singalongs nobody planned, and a drummer who looks like he's having more fun than anyone in the building. The Scratch opens. Monday nights at the Observatory have a different energy than the weekend — smaller crowd, louder per capita, everyone there on purpose. If you've never heard either act, that's the point. This is the kind of Monday night that makes Tuesday morning feel like a badge of honor. Monday, November 2, 2026 · Doors 7 PM / Show 8 PM · The Observatory North Park, 2891 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104 · All ages · Tickets via Ticketmaster

Steve Lacy: Oh yeah? Tour — Gallagher Square at Petco Park, San Diego
Nov 19, 2026 Gallagher Square at Petco Park, 10…

Dark Red comes on in the car and nobody says anything. Not because they do not like it — because they all feel it at the same time. That guitar tone does something to your chest before the lyrics even land. Steve Lacy writes songs for that exact version of you — the one who is thinking about it but not saying anything about it. Lacy built his reputation as the youngest member of The Internet, Syd's Grammy-nominated collective from the Odd Future orbit, before Bad Habit turned him into a generational voice in 2022. His guitar work is deceptively simple. His falsetto cracks in places that feel intentional. The production is warm and analog and sounds like it was recorded in a room where someone recently burned incense. He makes R&B for people who also listen to Radiohead and are not embarrassed about either. The Oh yeah? Tour brings him to Gallagher Square at Petco Park in San Diego on Thursday, November 19. This is the outdoor stage adjacent to the ballpark — open air, downtown skyline, and a crowd that already knows every word to Helmet before the set list drops. If you have a person who needs to hear this live, you already know who they are. Tickets available through Ticketmaster. Show at 8:00 PM. Gallagher Square at Petco Park, 100 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101. All ages.

LA Chargers vs. Houston Texans — SoFi Stadium
Nov 8, 2026 SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr, Ing…

The Chargers come home to SoFi for a November showdown with the Houston Texans, a franchise that has become one of the most watchable teams in the AFC. C.J. Stroud brought the Texans back to relevance and the national conversation; this is the kind of matchup where both fanbases show up knowing their team has a real shot at January football. November at SoFi hits different. The summer heat is gone. The late-afternoon light slants through the oculus and catches the field at that angle that makes you understand why they built this place with an open roof. The crowd leans in harder in November — every game matters more, every third-down conversion sounds louder, every incompletion carries weight. The Chargers' home crowd has found its voice in Inglewood, and a 1:05 PM Sunday kickoff means the tailgate starts at sunrise along the parking lots and the food trucks that line Prairie Avenue. This is the stretch of the season where you learn what a team is made of. The Chargers and Texans are both building something real, and this game is where those ambitions collide. Kickoff is 1:05 PM on CBS. SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr, Inglewood, CA 90301. Grab seats on Ticketmaster before November gets loud.

Your chest hears them before your ears do. A sound comes in off the water, every conversation on the Embarcadero stops mid-sentence, and a few thousand heads tilt back at the same moment. This is the week the Blue Angels belong to San Diego Bay, flying low enough that the downtown skyline becomes their backdrop. What visitors miss is the quieter half. You can walk aboard Navy destroyers, submarines, and amphibious ships free of charge, up the gangway and into the passageways where somebody's kid stands on deployment. The Parade of Ships moves through the bay, the bands play, and the city says out loud that the Navy is its largest employer. This is not a show San Diego hosts. It is San Diego looking at itself. Free, family-friendly, on the Broadway Pier and Embarcadero in October, and the trolley beats parking on air show day. Bring the person who has never stood underneath one of those passes.

Some version of October only exists in memory now: hay that smells sweet, pumpkins still warm from the sun, a kid small enough to be genuinely amazed by a corn maze. Sixty acres at the edge of Moorpark have kept that version alive for twenty-nine years, and the same families come back to walk the same rows, because certain rituals only work if the dirt is real. You cut your own pumpkin off the vine. The pick-your-own rows change weekly as the harvest rotates. Wagon rides are pulled by actual tractors through actual fields, the maze is cut fresh each season, and the petting zoo has outlasted every trendy patch popup in the county. Themed weekends rotate through, so the crowd shifts while the transaction stays the same. Five weeks of it in Moorpark, gate admission on weekdays, presale for weekends, cash for the produce stand. You leave with dirt on your shoes and something in the back seat that no screen handed you.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker 2026 — New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center
Nov 27, 2026 David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Cen…

Some performances exist because they are scheduled. The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center exists because New York City needs it — the way a city needs its bridges or its park, something that holds the place together by being exactly where it always is when the temperature drops. George Balanchine choreographed this version of The Nutcracker in 1954, and New York City Ballet has performed it every holiday season since. It is not the only Nutcracker in the world, but it is the one that defined what the word means to most Americans — the growing Christmas tree that seems to rise past the ceiling, the snow scene that uses real-looking flakes falling in a way that makes the audience hold its breath, the second act's parade of dances from around the world, each one a tiny jewel of a thing that lasts just long enough to leave you wanting more. The 2026-2027 season runs from Friday, November 27, 2026 through Sunday, January 3, 2027 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, West 63rd Street and Columbus Avenue. Tickets go on sale in September at nycballet.com or by phone at 212-496-0600. Prices range depending on seat location and performance date, but matinees tend to be slightly less expensive and equally magical. The production itself is massive — the sets were designed by Rouben Ter-Arutunian and have been meticulously maintained and restored over the decades. The Christmas tree grows from 12 feet to over 40 feet during the transformation scene, a piece of stagecraft that still draws gasps from audiences who know exactly when it is coming. The cast draws from NYCB's full company plus students from the School of American Ballet, meaning you are watching the next generation of American ballet share a stage with its current one. The final performance on January 3 at 1 PM is a special physical-friendly show with adjusted lighting and sound levels, relaxed house policies, designated break areas, and pre-visit materials — designed so that families who might not attend a traditional performance can experience the ballet in a setting that works for them. This is the kind of event where a first-time visitor cries during the snow scene and cannot explain why, and a season ticket holder who has seen it forty times watches the same scene and still leans forward. Lincoln Center at the holidays is its own kind of pilgrimage — the fountain lit up, the tree in the plaza, the crowd filing in. If you have never been, go. If you have been, go again. The Nutcracker does not change, but you do, and the performance meets you wherever you are.

You know that feeling when the ocean goes dark and something starts to glow beneath the surface — not a trick, not a screen, just biology doing what it has done for millions of years? Your kid's face when they see bioluminescence for the first time is going to wreck you. Birch Aquarium opens after dark for two nights only, and the whole place transforms into something between a science lab and a haunted tide pool. Live music from Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters drifts across the grounds while divers carve pumpkins underwater inside the tanks — the pumpkin guts float upward while kids press their faces to the glass. A costume parade winds through the exhibits. Trick-or-treating stations scatter across the aquarium grounds while the La Jolla cliffs disappear into fog behind you. The hands-on slime station and fluorescence demos make this more than a walk-through. Kids get to touch, build, and ask every question they have been saving up. Adults get to remember what it felt like when the ocean was still pure magic and you did not need to understand it to be changed by it. October 25–26, 6:00–8:30 PM. Low afternoon light comes across the water at exactly the hour you happen to be free, catching the bay behind the vendor tables — and that light is the reason people linger here instead of buying their tomatoes and leaving. The market sets up at First and B on the island every week: certified organic produce, local honey, cut flowers, prepared food from people who hand you a sample before you think to ask. Some of these vendors have been showing up on the same afternoon for years, long enough that the regulars greet them by name and know which stall to hit before it sells out. That is what turns a weekly errand into the thing that makes one day on the island unlike all the others. It is free, it runs year-round, and it catches you on the way back from the beach or before the boat home. Take the person you always mean to see more of. Buy them a peach and stay until the light goes.

LA Rams vs. Green Bay Packers — NFL's First Thanksgiving Eve Game
Nov 25, 2026 SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr, Ing…

The NFL has never played on Thanksgiving Eve before. On November 25, 2026, that changes — and the stage is SoFi Stadium, the Rams hosting the Packers in a primetime game that streams exclusively on Netflix. The league could have picked any matchup to make history. They picked this one. There is something about a Wednesday night football game during the week nobody works. The whole city is already in holiday mode. Traffic is lighter. People are flying in. Extended family is arriving. And now, instead of the dead air between landing and the turkey, there is a game — the kind of game you build the evening around. The Rams and Packers have history that goes back decades, and this particular installment comes in Week 12 when both teams are fighting for playoff positioning. Kickoff is 5:00 PM Pacific. The Netflix broadcast means you can watch it from your aunt's couch in another state, but being in the building for a first-of-its-kind NFL event is the kind of thing you tell people about for years. SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr, Inglewood, CA 90301. Find tickets on Ticketmaster — this one sells itself.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026 -- New York, NY
Nov 26, 2026 77th Street & Central Park West, N…

From 77th Street down to Herald Square on Thanksgiving morning, two and a half million people line the route. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been doing this since 1924. The parade experience on the ground is unlike watching it on television. The balloons — some 16 giant character balloons representing beloved cultural icons from Snoopy to SpongeBob — tower five to six stories above the crowd and move with an unpredictable, living quality that cameras cannot capture. Broadway performers open each show segment. Marching bands from across the country perform along the 2.5-mile route. The floats are hand-built artworks. The energy of a crowd that lines up before dawn, wrapped in coats and coffee cups, for something they have seen every year since childhood — is genuinely moving in a way that resists irony. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is worth attending if you have ever watched it on television and wondered what it would be like to be there. The answer: colder, louder, and more emotionally resonant than you expect. This is one of the rare public events that functions identically for a six-year-old and a sixty-year-old. If you are a New Yorker who has always meant to go and never has: this is the year. Viewing tips: The best spots are along Central Park West from 72nd to 77th Street — arrive before 7 AM to claim a spot against the barriers. The parade steps off at 8:30 AM and passes any given point by 10 AM. Bring hand warmers, thermos coffee, and folding chairs. Avoid Herald Square — it is the most crowded and worst vantage point despite being the broadcast location. Midtown hotel prices spike 300-500 percent the week of Thanksgiving. Book months in advance or stay in Brooklyn. The parade is free, public, and unreservable. The transaction is not logistical. It is the decision to show up and be present at something that will look the same and feel different every single time.

Father Joe's Villages Turkey Trot sends thousands of runners through Balboa Park every Thanksgiving morning. Every registration helps Father Joe's Villages serve over a million meals to San Diegans experiencing homelessness. The run is a party. The reason for the run is not. The trick to a midweek market is that it forgives you for having a job. You get an hour. You are not doing a whole grocery run and nobody expects you to. You are going to walk a few rows, pick up bread that is still warm, buy more stone fruit than one person reasonably eats, and carry it back to your afternoon so the rest of the day stops feeling like a Wednesday. That is the entire proposition here, and it is a better one than it sounds. Local produce, fresh bread, honey, pastries, and the artisan tables that make the same market feel different depending on who turned up that week. It is free to browse, which means it is also free to linger, and lingering is most of the point. The regulars have their loop down to a route and their vendors down to first names. Thanksgiving week has a hole in it that nobody admits to. The meal ends early, the relatives go to bed at nine, and you are twenty-six years old standing in your childhood kitchen with a full night ahead of you and nothing to do with it. Everyone you went to high school with is also in town and also bored. A warehouse-scale room on Pico has been solving that deliberately. Catch One has been one of the most important dance floors in Los Angeles for decades, and a Thanksgiving-week party there runs on a very specific crowd: people home for the holiday, people who never left, and regulars who treat the week as a reunion they did not have to organize. House and techno, doors at six, early enough that you can genuinely do both. Going early is the move. The first two hours are when the room is loose and you can hear the person next to you. Halfway through the second film someone in the row behind you will stop breathing properly, and you will hear it, because nobody in this building is looking at a phone. That is what a Wednesday in a revival house buys: an audience that came to be frightened together instead of alone on a couch with all the lights on. Two Spanish filmmakers, six years apart, both convinced that the most frightening thing in a house is a mother who is certain. One is about a woman guarding her children from daylight. The other is about a woman who returns to the building that raised her and begins counting. Neither needs a drop of blood. Both were made by directors who understood that dread is really a question of how long you are willing to hold a shot before cutting. Worth knowing the lineage: Guillermo del Toro produced the second picture, and its director later graduated to enormous disaster films — but this is the one where he learned how to make an audience wait. Both screen on 35mm, house policy since 2014. First film 7:30, second at 9:45. 7165 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles.

The marigold petals make a path. You follow it not because you're told to, but because you already know where it leads — back to someone who isn't here anymore, and forward into a room full of people who understand why remembering them matters this much. Riverside's Día de los Muertos Festival spans six to seven blocks of downtown on November 1–2, making it one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the United States. Over 80 community-built altars line the streets, each one a love letter disguised as art. Two stages of live music keep the energy moving. Folklorico and Aztec dancers anchor the tradition. Lowrider displays that are art, not transportation. Face painting that turns you into the person your abuela would recognize instantly. This is not a themed event for an audience. This is a tradition that survived colonization, commercialization, and forgetting. The community builds it with their own hands every year because the dead deserve to be remembered beautifully. Riverside. November 1–2. Free admission. Bring flowers.

The week between Christmas and New Year is a dead zone in every city. Everyone is home, nobody has plans, and the days blur into one long Sunday afternoon of leftovers and other people's families. Dropping a bass festival into the middle of it is either a provocation or a public service, depending entirely on how your week has gone. A baseball stadium is a genuinely strange place to put this kind of music, and that is precisely the reason to go. Sub-bass behaves differently in a bowl built for crowd noise than it does in a field or a warehouse, because the low end comes back at you off the upper deck about a quarter-second late, so the whole park seems to breathe. The three o'clock start is the part regulars plan around: you get several hours of daylight sets, which is when the smaller names play and when there is still room to actually move, before the thing turns into a night show. Downtown San Diego, the thirtieth of December, gates mid-afternoon. Check which tiers are left before you commit, because the early presale has already gone.

The O'side Turkey Trot starts from Civic Center Plaza and heads through downtown Oceanside while most of the city is still dark. There's a 5K for the runners and a Kids Run for the ones who sprint the first hundred yards and walk the rest holding a parent's hand. The costumes range from coordinated family outfits to solo turkey suits held together with duct tape and determination. The post-race scene — stretched out across the plaza with the ocean visible at the end of the street — is Thanksgiving's opening act. The crowd lingers because there's nowhere better to be at 8 AM on a holiday than surrounded by neighbors who just did something mildly ridiculous together in the North County dawn. Thursday, November 26, 2026. 6:00 AM. Oceanside Civic Center Plaza, 300 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside 92054. Families do this every Thanksgiving then walk out to the pier, and the same organisers race up the coast the rest of the year.

You drop your name in a bucket, and fate decides whether you read tonight — in front of two hundred strangers who showed up on a Tuesday to hear exactly that. That's the deal at the longest-running spoken-word open mic in Los Angeles. Dante Basco started it in his living room in 1998 with Ron 'Shihan' Van Clief, Devan 'Poetri' Smith, and 'Brutha' Gimmel Hooper, and Da Poetry Lounge has run every Tuesday since, now at Greenway Court Theatre on Fairfax. This is the room that produced half of LA's spoken-word generation — Saul Williams, Beau Sia, Jamie DeWolf, in their different decades. The third Tuesday of every month is the slam: same room, real stakes. The rest of the time it's open — you sign up, you wait to hear your name, and whether you kill or freeze, the room holds you either way. Doors at eight, bucket at eight-thirty, mic at nine. Five dollars for open mic, ten for slam, cash only, all ages. Some of tonight's names have already been called. Some of them haven't.

Certain records function as family furniture — they were in the house before you were, and you know every word without ever having chosen to. Rumours is the clearest example in American life, which is why a tribute to it draws three generations to the same room and why nobody in that room is embarrassed. The band doing the playing takes the arrangements seriously, including the vocal interplay that is the actual difficulty of this material. Seated changes the night; it makes it about listening rather than dancing, and the harmonies reward that. A converted bowling alley in Ventura is a funnier and warmer setting than a theater. Music at 9:00 PM on East Thompson Boulevard, a Friday. Parents bring adult children to these and it usually turns out both of them had been meaning to suggest it.

Every Saturday morning, the heart of Old Town Temecula comes alive along 6th and Front Street, where local farmers, growers, and makers gather to sell their week's harvest. The market runs year-round from 8am to 12:30pm — a genuine neighborhood ritual that draws locals in week after week. You'll find seasonal produce picked days, not weeks, before sale: heirloom tomatoes, stone fruit, fresh herbs, and greens from farms across the Temecula Valley and surrounding Inland Empire. Beyond produce, the market features artisan goods — fresh-baked sourdough, wildflower honey, handmade jams, cut flowers, and handcrafted goods from regional makers. Old Town Temecula sets the scene: cobblestone streets, frontier-era storefronts, and the Temecula City Hall clock tower a few blocks away. The market is a natural gateway into Old Town's wine tasting rooms, vintage shops, and breakfast cafes that stay busy on Saturday mornings. Free to attend. Street parking available on 6th Street, Old Town Front Street, and in the adjacent Old Town Garage. Stroller and pet-friendly.

Coachella Valley Firebirds vs Bakersfield Condors - Thanksgiving Break

By the day after Thanksgiving the house has run out of things to say. The food is gone, the relatives are still here, somebody has put a parade recording on that nobody is watching, and the afternoon will not end. This is the escape hatch. Everyone gets in the car, drives to the arena, and for two hours the family has something to look at that is not each other - which is the actual function of minor-league hockey in a town like this and nobody says it out loud. The Condors are the other California farm club, two hours up the 99, so there is just enough edge in it to care. The giveaway is a Fuego on a Shelf figurine, Fuego being the team's phoenix mascot, and yes, that is the joke it sounds like. Puck drops at 7, 75702 Varner Road. The valley fills up with people visiting family all week, which is the one stretch of the year the desert is louder than the coast.

The craving hits around seven on a Thursday — not for a restaurant, not for delivery, just for somewhere alive? A parking lot in Van Nuys transforms into the thing your neighborhood was missing: a hundred vendors deep, smoke rising from grills you've never tried, the kind of energy that makes strangers share tables. LA's fastest-growing night market launched in 2025 and never stopped. Every Thursday through Sunday, 5 PM to 11 PM, the corner of Sherman Way fills with skewers, tacos al pastor carved to order, mochi donuts still warm, Thai iced tea poured from steel pitchers, and a crowd that looks exactly like the San Fernando Valley — which is to say, like everybody. The first-timers come for the food. The regulars come because it replaced the couch. You don't need a reservation. You don't need a group text. You just show up, eat something you've never heard of, and leave wondering why every neighborhood doesn't have this. Free parking, free entry. 16955 Sherman Way, Van Nuys. Orange County gets told its nightlife ends at a rooftop bar with a nineteen-dollar cocktail and a cover band. Nobody told the Korean-American kids in Irvine and Fullerton who have spent years driving up to Koreatown because nothing closer played what they wanted. This one stays south. K-pop cut with EDM, loud, on a Thursday - and the Thursday is the real tell, because a weeknight crowd is never the casual one. Nobody burns a school night on something they are lukewarm about. Time is a fourteen-thousand-square-foot room with tiered booths ringing the floor, so the people not dancing are still watching the people who are, and that changes how hard the floor goes. The other thing a Thursday does is thin out the people who came to be seen, which leaves the ones who came to sing - and a K-pop floor only works when enough of the room is willing to be embarrassing out loud together. Doors at 10pm, 21+, 1875 Newport Boulevard. The OC scene that turns out for this keeps its own calendar, and most of Los Angeles has never once looked at it.

Dec 31 – Dec 31, 2026 Times Square, 1 Times Square, New …

It sounds optional right up until you are standing in a street you have seen a thousand times on screens, in the cold, with a million people counting down together - and then you understand why New Yorkers largely skip it and visitors from everywhere else largely cannot explain why they needed to do it once. New Year's Eve in Times Square operates as organized chaos at maximum human scale, and the ball has been dropping since 1907. Streets close to vehicle traffic by mid-afternoon, and people begin staking viewing positions hours before midnight. The ball itself is 12 feet across, weighs nearly 12,000 pounds, and is covered in 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles lit by LEDs. The confetti that fills the air at midnight is printed with handwritten wishes submitted in advance by people around the world - a detail most people only discover after it has already fallen on them. NYPD maintains sector-by-sector crowd control; once you are inside a viewing zone, you stay in it until after midnight. It is worth attending if you have never been and want to see what a city looks and sounds like at its most collectively alive. It is explicitly not worth it if you require warmth, freedom of movement, or reliable access to food and restrooms during a five-to-six-hour wait. Viewing zones open around 3 PM and fill from the stage outward, so arrive by early afternoon for a direct sightline to the ball. Bathrooms are extremely scarce with very long lines. Alcohol is prohibited in the public viewing areas. Dress for 25 to 35 degrees with wind, and bring hand warmers and layers. Your phone will likely not work for the first hour of 2027 as every carrier network in Manhattan saturates at once. Hotels within walking distance book out months ahead. That midnight moment is not available on any stream. December 31st, One Times Square.

Portland Book Festival 2026 — Portland, OR
Every day · Next Nov 2 1219 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 972…

Portland doesn't have a literary scene. Portland is a literary scene — a city where the world's largest independent bookstore employs more people than some towns, where poets perform to sold-out rooms, where the kid at the coffee shop is reading Borges without irony. The Portland Book Festival is the annual proof, and in 2026 it expands for the first time into a full week: November 2 through 8, stretching across the South Park Blocks, the Portland Art Museum, McMenamins Mission Theater, Mississippi Studios, and Lan Su Chinese Garden. The main gathering on November 7 fills the South Park Blocks with more than 100 local, regional, and nationally acclaimed authors — readings, panels, pop-up writing workshops, a massive book fair, and, because this is Portland, food trucks parked on every corner. But the real expansion is in the surrounding days: evening events at music venues and restaurants, cross-disciplinary programming that pairs authors with live music and visual art, culinary experiences built around books about food, and late-night programming that turns what used to be a single-day book fair into a cultural festival with literature at its center. If you're the kind of person who keeps a running list of books you want to read that's longer than any list of books you've actually finished — who gets unreasonably excited when a favorite author announces a new title, who has talked about starting a novel but never quite has — this is the week where your people gather. The Oregon Symphony and Mississippi Studios provide the soundtrack. Lan Su Chinese Garden provides the setting for conversations that feel like they're happening in a novel rather than at a festival. The South Park Blocks provide the November air that makes holding a warm cup of coffee while carrying three new books feel like the only correct way to spend a Saturday. What to know before you go: Portland in November is gray, wet, and beautiful. Bring a rain jacket and a tote bag large enough for impulse buys at the book fair. Powell's City of Books is a fifteen-minute walk from the main festival grounds and is the obvious pre- or post-festival pilgrimage. Events range from free to ticketed. Full schedule at literary-arts.org. The Portland Book Festival is the Pacific Northwest's largest literary event, and its expansion to a full week is itself a statement: that books are not a niche interest but a way of moving through the world, and that the people who organize their lives around words deserve more than an afternoon.

Thirty-six women breathe as one body and something in you stands at attention too. The kick line begins and the arithmetic of it — 36 legs, one sound, one beat, zero margin — bypasses your brain entirely and goes straight to the part of you that believes in things. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes returns to Radio City Music Hall for the largest production in the show’s 93-year history: 230 scheduled performances from November 4 through January 4, ten show-stopping Rockettes numbers, and the iconic Parade of the Wooden Soldiers — performed every year since 1933, red-and-white soldiers executing military-precision choreography before their famous falling-dominoes finale. The 2026 season marks a new performance record for the Music Hall, with more shows than any year since the Christmas Spectacular debuted. If you are the kind of person who tears up at the first note of “O Holy Night” in a room full of strangers, this show was built for you. If you think holiday spectacles are corny and overpriced, this is the one that changes minds — not because it avoids sentimentality, but because it earns every second of it. The Rockettes are not a nostalgia act. They are 36 of the most technically precise dancers working today, performing at a synchronization level that professional sports teams study. First-timers are routinely stunned by the scale: the 90-minute runtime with no intermission feels like 30 minutes, and the stage effects — a full-size double-decker bus, indoor snowfall, a living Nativity with live camels — are architecture, not gimmicks. Arrive at least an hour early. Late entry is not permitted, and the walk through Rockefeller Center in November is half the experience. First Mezzanine center gives the best full-stage view — the kick line hits differently when you see all 36 at once. Orchestra center rows F through N put you at eye level with the precision footwork. Tickets start at $50 at the box office, $55 online through Ticketmaster or rockettes.com. Weekday matinees are the value play. Dress festive, wear comfortable shoes, eat before you go. Radio City Music Hall is the largest indoor theater in the world, and the Christmas Spectacular is its reason for existing. Every year, more than a million people walk through those Art Deco doors and sit in the dark with strangers and come out feeling like they belong to the same season. That is not a show. That is a civic ritual, and it runs from November through the first days of the new year because some things do not need to be new to be necessary.

August is when it peaks — the season's found its rhythm, the regulars all know each other, and every so often something rare rolls up that would never enter a judged competition. You wrote something once that nobody published, and at some point you decided that meant it was not real. That belief is the thing this whole event exists to argue with. A warehouse in the Arts District fills with people who skipped the argument entirely — zinesters who photocopied forty copies of something personal and stapled it themselves. Politics, personal narrative, photography, graphic design, visual art, and a great deal that refuses a category. You will pay three dollars for something a stranger made about their mother, or their neighbourhood, or a bus route, and read it that night. The part that changes people: the table is the whole distance. There is no publisher, no gatekeeper, no acquisitions meeting between the person who made it and you. A surprising number of people arrive as browsers and leave having quietly decided to table next year. Saturday, November 7. Angel City Derby Warehouse, 785 E. 14th Pl., Los Angeles. All ages.

Red everywhere in the concourse, a genuine contest for the building, and a home crowd that arrives knowing it has to work for its own room. That is the fixture. It lands in the strange gap between the holidays and the new year, when half the city is still off and nobody is entirely sure what day it is, which gives the whole thing a loose, slightly delirious quality on top of a division game with real consequences attached. Eighty-three years. That is how long the National Folk Festival has been wandering the country, setting up stages in a different American city every few years, and proving that the most extraordinary culture in the United States lives in ordinary places. The 83rd National Folk Festival comes to Jackson, Mississippi for three days of continuous music, dance, storytelling, craft demonstrations, and food from the people who carry these traditions in their hands and voices. More than 300 performers across up to seven stages — blues, gospel, zydeco, bluegrass, Native American dance, Appalachian clogging, Cajun accordion, Mississippi Delta harmonica. Every style earned its spot by surviving generations of being passed from person to person. Jackson is not an accident. The festival chose Mississippi because this state is where American music was born — where the blues walked out of the Delta, where gospel filled churches that became concert halls, where the crossroads are not a metaphor but a real intersection. The city becomes the stage. The traditions become the headliners. If you have ever wondered what American culture sounds like when nobody is trying to sell it to you, this is where you find out. The National Folk Festival is free — always has been, since 1934 — because the people who carry these traditions believe they belong to everyone. The performers are not celebrities. They are the last links in chains that stretch back centuries. A Cajun fiddler whose grandfather taught him the same tune. A quilter whose patterns encode stories her great-grandmother could not write down. A blues harmonica player from Clarksdale who sounds exactly like the Mississippi River feels. The food alone justifies the trip. Mississippi catfish, hot tamales from the Delta, soul food plates that could start a religion. Local artisans demonstrate crafts that predate the state itself. Children's programming runs all three days. The stages never go quiet. Presented by the National Council for the Traditional Arts as part of the Smithsonian's Of the People: Festival of Festivals initiative — a yearlong series of community celebrations across the country marking America's 250th anniversary. Free admission, all three days. November 13-15, 2026. Downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Worth the flight. Worth the drive. Worth remembering that the best culture in this country has always been free.

Morrissey and the Pumpkins headline, but the undercard is where the real reunions happen: Simple Minds, Bad Religion, Adam Ant, The Psychedelic Furs, Soft Cell, The Damned, Gary Numan, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks, Marky Ramone — over thirty-five artists across three oceanfront stages, the entire width of post-punk, darkwave, goth, new wave, and hardcore punk in a single day, treated correctly as one family that has always been in conversation. The beach faces west, so by the time the headliners go on, the Pacific is doing the gold-then-purple thing. Sand for a venue floor. November air cool enough for the jacket you have been saving. You feel the kick drum before you hear it. That is what a proper theatre does to live sound and what an arena never manages — the room is small enough that the low end reaches your chest instead of dissolving into a concrete bowl, and the people around you are close enough that their reactions become part of the mix. Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is built for exactly that kind of listening: a room designed for occasions rather than for volume, where the sound engineer is not fighting the architecture. Everyone in it is doing the same thing at the same time, which is the oldest reason there is to leave the house. All ages, on a November evening in Hollywood. Modified hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve — they’re open on all of them, just shorter windows. The rink benefits Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation, so the money goes somewhere that matters. But that’s not why you go. You go because it’s December and you want your kid to remember this one. Or because it’s a Tuesday and the week has been long and you want to feel something besides your phone screen. The regulars know: go on a weeknight. It’s quieter, the lines are shorter, and the lights hit different when the crowd thins out. 2875 Dewey Road, Liberty Station, San Diego 92106.

Nov 14, 2026 $55+ Pechanga Arena, 3500 Sports Arena …

For millions of families on both sides of the border these are not songs anybody discovered. They were already playing at every backyard party and every quinceanera before you were old enough to ask who was singing. Five decades of corridos about migration, love, struggle and pride, handed down the way recipes are handed down. When the group plays San Diego, three generations show up dressed for it, grandparents and parents and kids who learned every word without once being taught, and the whole arena sings 'Jefe de Jefes' and 'La Puerta Negra' loudly enough that the band could stop playing and nothing would be lost. Pechanga Arena on a Saturday night in November. Bring your parents. Wear the boots. Then stand inside a living piece of cultural history and let it work on you the way it has always worked on them.
